THIS! Especially for gaming. The 5800X3D still holds its own quite well on a lot of gaming benchmarks, even against the 79xx processors and the 13900 series. So give the 7000X3D a better base processor to work with and maybe even increase the 3D cache over last year (there IS physically more room to work with given the added height of the 7000 IHS to match the AM4 geometry...and you could have an insanely performant chip. Also, IF (big if) you are the type of person who upgrades the CPU often, you have longevity with the AM5 platform that you won't get with 13th gen. Not the consideration for everyone but imagine being able to use an 8000 or 9000 or 10000 series X3D chip on a motherboard you buy today....

There are barely any canned benchmarks for a lot of pro applications, that's what I specialise in and I had to make my own Autodesk (Inventor) benchmark tool to get stuff tested. I can test 3DS Max but with what scene, the results mean nothing to anyone as the scenes will be custom with no historical or third party testing data to compare with. The SPEC tests aren't all that valuable either as they're just viewport tests which at this point is testing how much faster than already fast enough does it orbit a scene. The likes of CFD is so niche that again nobody has created a standardised test for it, and on what suite, there's tons of them with little to no demand. It's a nightmare doing reviews in the pro area because of this!

It's been a reliable workhourse all these years, and even still runs games very well at 2560x1080. I finally got the urge to upgrade after seeing some reviews about Ryzen 7, so I started ordering stuff for a R7 7700x build last week. THEN I see these results for 13th gen. I waffled a bit on returning the AMD stuff, but it's really so close, that I decided I'll just keep it, and run with AMD for a few years (it will remind me of the Athlon 2 days, lol). the 7700 should be a huge improvement already, and next year I'll upgrade the video card, and a few years after that, I should be able to drop in a newer cpu, still using the AM5 socket and keep going.

As much as I hate it the initial cost is high , but everything is new tech (pcie 4/5, ddr5, bunch of 10/20 Gbps USB etc...), thats not comparable to X370 when Zen1 launched. Electrical bill is an issue in europe. my current rate from 9 cent/kWh (2021) to 37-70 cent/kWh (2022). So i tend to pick components that are more efficient, since i dont make money with my pc.

However if you are the kind of buyer that always want to get the latest and greatest and upgrade every 2 years then AMD will be better due to the new socket being future proof for the next 4 years whilst the Intel socket is now on it's last generation so is end of the road, no upgrades in the future.

To your question, my current system is a 5950x, 128GB 4000 DDR4, 6900xt. We've discussed it as a gaming family and will be staying AMD. Either i sell my gpu and use that cash for a 4k gpu this q4. Or i sell the entire build and save up for a full 13900k or X3D am5 build when the time comes. I just built a new PC after being a Laptop boy for over 10 years. Still waiting to decide on the GPU. Kind of waiting on the Black Friday Sales. I went with AMD 7700X and am very happy with it. Not a bit overclocker and have not been bit into Games, but that may change. I am still very happy with my choice. I have not built a PC from parts in over 10 years and had a few challenges, but overall the experience was not too bad. I went with Air Cooling with the Noctua A12U cooler and built it in a Lian Li Airflow case. Overall very happy with my choice I hummed and ha'd for weeks over Intel or AMD. The deciding factor was that I figured that AMD would be able to support upgrades on the motherboard longer. I also wanted to go with AMD as I wanted to go with DDR5. I may upgrade my Ram later from 32 to another 64 Bottom line I am very please with the choice.

Nice seeing solid competition between AMD and Intel. Will be interesting to see how AMD's X3D CPUs will perform coming next year when they'll get released. I'm not in the run for a new CPU yet, but this is excellent news for me down the road in a couple years when I want to upgrade my CPU/Mobo/RAM platform. Can't say I'm terribly thrilled about the direction the competition is driving in regards to energy consumption, especially given the rising energy prices. 300W CPUs, 450+ W GPUs ... those are expensive prospects in the long run. I hope they'll start shifting their focus on power efficiency and not just to increase performance for the same power draw!

@Torrrero
@Torrrero Год назад
I don't understand all this power consumption whining, at least about the CPU. If you want lower power consumption you just put around 80w limit and still get around 95% of performance. Is it that complicated to do? Or is it just laziness? There were many videos and information about how efficient the new CPUs are and how much faster they are at the same power usage. For now I don't care how much power it draws, I want absolute maximum performance. But when I will care I can set limits and problem solved. On the other hand, if AMD / Intel will design next gen CPUs for lower power usage, including motherboard VRM and all other tech, you will be happy, but I am not because I can't force CPU to use more power and get max performance, it's not designed to do so. I hope it will stay the same and the manufacturers will just spend some time and money to teach people how to set lower power limits in a few clicks.

@@Torrrero You're going to to have to explain to me where I was whining. I merely said I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of the industry pushing higher power consumption to get higher performance given the ongoing economic situation and that I'd much rather have a stronger focus on efficiency. Nothing I said should warrant such a defensive and at points confrontative attitude. And you should probably also take a moment to reflect that such concerns don't have to be apply stringently across the whole portfolio. Nothing says CPU manufacturers can't strive for as power efficient as possible CPUs in the low-, mid- and high-performance tiers and STILL offer CPUs with greater powerlimit tolerances for the enthusiast consumers/OC afficionados. Me and you getting what we want isn't a mutually exclusive zero-sum equation.
@johndoh5182
@johndoh5182 Год назад
@@Torrrero AMD Zen 4 is what gives you near 90% of the performance going all the way down to 65W ECO mode. But this misses the point really. The point is these CPUs, other than the 12900K and 13900K use only a fraction of their all-core load power during gaming. The 12900K and 13900K are pushed too much, and while that helps their gaming performance it hurts power consumption during gaming, so if that's your main workload then yes if you buy THOSE CPUs you probably do want to turn them down. For any of the AMD CPUs you only need to use an ECO mode if you're running all-core loads or you just don't like the idea of how the CPU works even though the design is perfectly fine, which is a ramp up in clock speed until some temp sensors hit about 95 C. However that doesn't bother me because it doesn't add up to much heat in the room, because a SINGLE sensor or two hitting that heat is a trivial amount of die space. You take a hunk of metal that's a 1 cm cube and heat it up to 95 C and you don't notice it heating up a room. You take a hunk of metal that's 1 meter cube and heat it up to 95 C and now your room is an oven. In other word if I don't notice it heating the room I don't care. AMD is using TSMC N5 which has about 2X the transistor density of Intel 7A, so a single core heating up to 95C isn't as much area. If AMD would add more ECO modes I'd probably use it. Like for their 105W TDP parts if they had an 85W ECO mode and 65W ECO mode that would be nice. And for their 170W TDP parts they should have 150W, 130W, 105W, 85W and 65W. If AMD did that I'd buy the 7700X3D and set it at 85W ECO and be quite happy about it.

Changing platforms is often cheaper. For the money you pay today for AM5 and DDR5 memory, you can buy in 3-5 years 3 of them for the same price. They already did that with Win7 (which was a great OS) after launching Win8 with that avangarde UI (that no one asked for), and they're doing it again with Win11. The rat race really has become too expensive to keep up. If you bought a 3000 series video card a little over a year ago for twice the marketed price, then the new video cards are a slight. And although the combination of the effects of the pandemic, scalpers and crypto miners hoarding the cards as well as the big generational leap in performance is unlikely to happen again soon, chances are that the 5000 series cards are going to bitch slap the 4000 series cards as well. It's just not worth spending 1000 to 2000 dollars on a graphics card that might be obsolete in two years time. And the same can be said about 500-700 dollar CPUs. As a 1440p gamer I'm also at a point where while I think the performance of all this new hardware is pretty cool, I have zero interest in upgrading because my current computer runs everything more than fine. I might think about it when the games I play start becoming problematic, something I don't expect to happen the first 3 to 5 years.

i agree i just got my 3900x for 220 used on the market and i love it man, i dont plan on upgrading for anytime soon, but hey if i can snag a 3950x or 5950x and get 16 cores for a decent price i will upgrade because i do game design and video editing but hey i dont need it but i can sure use it, but i dont plan on switching from am4 anytime soon!

I'm still on the R7 1700 and RX 480 (8GB) for my 1440p rig. Probably going to upgrade to the R7 5800X3D (my motherboard supports it just fine and it saves me a ton in memory etc) For you though that CPU would be a side grade. More cache will help in spagetti code, more cores in multithreaded heavy execution code, and higher frequency/IPC in anything else. In your case I suggest just waiting and upgrading to AM5 when prices comes down a bit. There's no rush.
