A music copyright is actually a bundle of separate exclusive rights. When you copyright songs, you have the right to:
Make and distribute the first sound recording of the song;
Make and distribute copies of the song;
Prepare derivative works;
Perform the song and authorize others to perform it;
Display the song.
Under international law, copyright is the automatic right of the creator of a work. In order to enforce the copyright though, you'll need to be able to prove your ownership.

I recently recorded a video of a college band in NYC and posted it to YT. Received a copyright claim from someone claiming the rights to the song. March Grandioso was copyrighted in 1909 and died in 1946. Colleges, high school bands and orchestras play this music since its creation. After vigorous research, they don't have any rights or licenses to the song. How is it possible for them to be on YT content ID system as owners of this copyright?

As a songwriter, do you have to submit an acapella recording of your song so that the melody can be copyrighted? Do you have to submit the song with the instrumental even if you do not own the rights to the instrumental?

Hi Juan, since you are copyrighting the lyrics and melody, an acapella or sheet music should be enough to be registered at the US Copyright Office. In any case it is better to address this question to them just to be sure.

Thank you. I love you. ♥️ I'm a producer, but I also do a lot of songwriting where I guide my artiste(s) on how they create. I want to be sure to secure my rights with this and I think the thing to do here is to sign a split sheet with the artiste. My question however is, at times I see songs produced and released where one of the featured artistes in the title is the producer (even when the producer has no actual vocals on the recording). How does this arrangement work? Once again thank you guys so much. You're doing great work. Peace and love from Jamaica 🇯🇲.

Hi Asus and thank you for the support. I think what you are asking depends if the Artist has Work For Hire agreement with the producer or he gives him a share of the song rights. The basic logic would be this: Artist pays bigger amount of money to the producer for his work, but the producer won't have any share of the song rights, or artist could pay less or no money for the services of the producer and in exchange the producer will get a share in the song. Usually the share of the producer is for the Master Recording and not the Songwriter share, but that too depends on the agreement between them and if the producer actually collaborated in the creation of the melody and lyrics. Hope that this helps.

So then is it ok to sign the moral rights of a song you made if you still have the 100% copyright ?
