Football is a game of opinions, you'll never convince some people. Some argies still think maradona is the goat. Messi probably is the goat but I prefer others. It doesn't change the facts but if you want someone to model your game on you simply can't choose Messi because it's impossible to replicate.

Messi is a miracle if you ask me. To be so consistently supernatural on the pitch is just a miracle. Most players will have maaybe one or two games the way he did in this one. He makes it routine. I do think it reaaaaly helps that him and Suarez can read each other's minds. Helps a lot. But still just amazing.

There was Messi in an Argentina against the US under-17 match. I was watching to see the US players and hadn't heard of Messi before. I've never seen anyone dominate a soccer match like that before or since. I knew right then we weren't winning a world cup for the next twenty years with this guy around. Altho' it still amazes me that Argentina only got one World Cup with Messi. Their national soccer team is as dysfunctional as their economy.

He had 4 penalties & 3 other goals (1 tap in). Not very impressive. Angel Di Maria & Emiliano Martinez were way more influential for Argentina's success in the WC. I wasn't expecting them to reach that far though. But in the last 2 and a half seasons with Barcelona (not decisive, losing many balls, walking on the pitch, missing chances) he was playing very bad, he did nothing even before that when Barca was getting thrashed in the UCL. He still managed to get excellent stats in his last seasons though, which is telling that even very bad Messi can dominate the spanish league. Suarez is my favorite El Pistolero.

They were so comically bad that I got my only career hattrick against them, despite playing defense. Also, at one point one of their defenders thought he'd heard the whistle and picked the ball up in the penalty area, and the ref felt so sorry for them that he didn't award a penalty... 😄

Busquets (35), Messi (36) and Suarez (37) would still rip the highest leagues apart. These athletes are a class apart. Same as Modric (38) and Kroos (34) who did stay at Real Madrid and are now in semifinals of Champions League. Note that only one year ago Messi won the world cup, the highest of highest in football. Also note Zlatan (39 at the time) returned to AC Milan after MLS and won the Serie A in 2020.

But I'd argue Messi could still start for any club in the world with the exception of maybe Madrid and City. He chose to come here instead, I'm sure in part because he has nothing left to prove. But also I think he was tired of the BS in Europe. Corruption, mismanagement, club politics, toxic supporters. He just wants to play for the love of the game. It had stopped being about that in Europe long ago, assuming it ever was. As for the skill level, we saw a little bit of that when Henry came to Red Bulls. Most European stars were a shell of their former selves when they came here but Henry still had legs. The league was poorer then than it is now and the gulf in quality between him and everyone else was stark. We had never seen anything like that on our shores before, it was incredible. Messi and Friends have brought that same feeling times 10.
