4:06 Professional Interfaces (Playback Samples)
4:47 Laptop vs. Professional vs. Cheap (Samples)
5:39 Laptop vs. Professional vs. Cheap (+ effects) (Samples)
6:48 Laptop vs. Professional vs. Cheap (+ effects & Instruments) (Samples)
8:04 Dynamic vs. Condenser Microphone (Samples)
Remarks:
---------------
- If you sing quieter than we did in our tests, you will have to crank up the volume more, which means you also amplify the noise of the setup. This will make the difference between the setups more drastical.
- We did this test with Dynamic Microphones. Other Microphones (e.g. Condenser) may need Phantom Power, which will be supported by interfaces, but not by a cheap USB-SoundCard-Stick or a plain Laptop. Though condenser Mics can work without Phantom Power, it always results in more noise.
- There are of course more advantages of an interface, than just an increase in quality (e.g. Phantom Power, multiple inputs/outpus, XLR inputs, ...)
Interfaces used:
--------------------------
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 2nd Generation
Audiobox 1818vsl
PCs used:
---------------
Desktop PC with MSI H67ma-e45
Acer Swift 1
Dell XPS L502x
USB Soundcard Stick:
----------------------------------
NoName (but i'd expect it to perform similar to the "Sabrent USB External Stereo Sound Adapter")
Microphones:
-------------------------
3x t.bone CD-65
1x Studio B1
Song:
--------
Mad Caddies - Falling down
Singers Channel:
--------------------------
/ @projektoktopus1072
Applied effects:
-------------------------
All recordings (except where otherwise mentioned) are played back without any effects, but with normalized gain.
In the last recording (t.bone vs. Studio B1), we added an equalizer to the t.bone to try to better match the studios characterics, as we wanted to compare quality, not frequency response

No!!! The green laptop is great!!! Please listen only from 4:47 to 5:00 I am not crazy. Usb interface lost the battle for sure. The sound is much livelier. It doesn't lose the natural harmonics of the sound wave. The only problem there on the 1/8" input was the slight hiss. But it doesn't happen on a MacBook I can assure you.

Thanks for making this video. At the time, I´m recording multiple stuff and instruments at home with a simple Onboard Desktop PC Card, and I still can´t convince myself that an external audio card makes a big difference in audio to justify the price they have, although that´s what I repeatedly got and heard on the internet, like if using an external audio card was a "must" to record enjoyable audio for music videos. And to be honest (knowing this may sound unpopular) after watching this video I still have my doubts as I don´t hear that noticeable differences between the different options in terms of audio quality, just a little bit less noise ("hiss") on the higher shelf of the mix (which can be easily worked around with EQ)
@quiteanicechannel268
@quiteanicechannel268 5 лет назад
This "popular opinion" that external interfaces are a "must have, no matter what" was the exact reason why we wanted to do this comparison. Though I am really glad that I have an interface (XLR inputs, multiple inputs, Live Monitoring, Convenient Gain & Headphones Control, less noise in quiet recordings....) I think it's totally fine to not use any if you're on a budget (like I also had done for years)

I know ur comment is very old, but I was planning to record drums with the soundboard that comes in my motherboard, do you have any recommendation of what to do and what to NOT do? I was planning to get one shure sv200 and one usb audio adapter, but im very new on studio and audio stuff.
@GabrielNardinMusic
@GabrielNardinMusic 3 года назад
@@karikurifoxkkf3626 I can tell you what I did when I tried my best to record drums on a budget with on-board soundcard. I plugged a cheap transistor amp to the soundboard to work as a pre-amplifier, which also had 2 channel inputs with trhe possiblity of working the volume level and EQ of each one of them. Then from that amp, got out 2 very cheap mics: One directly to the bass drum and the other one working as a general overhead to capture the rest of the drum. The result was acceptable considering the limitations. I would advice to get at least 2 mics as I did (one for the kick and other for the rest) because the area where the sounds are captured ar so far away that if you can´t get that you will end in a trade off between not capturing the kick or having a really "distant" sound on the snare, toms, etc. If that is impossible I hope the sound of your room is decent enough because you will depend on it to get some sounds on just one mic.

If you listen with even the cheepest headphones you will hear the extra noise that the cheep laptop/PC soundcards create vs the close to zero noise that the good soundcards create. Yes in the final output, that you want to compress and expand your audio, all that extra noise from all those sources is going to make a very cheep output.

As the "amount that you turn up the gain" is not really comparable at all between Interfaces/SoundCards, we decided to "test the differences when all gains are turned up to reach the same end volume". So if we did the test-setup right, there shouldn't be any differences in volume. However it was not possible to align them 100%, as the singer moved her head very slightley, leading to tiny differences in volume between the single microphones. However we found them rather neglectable for the comparison.

Dang! Super detailed video. @Quite a nice Channel May I ask what DAW and effects did you use to achieve that great effects on 5:45 ? Is it possible to achieve using Audacity? My niece loves to sing but I suck at music editing :( I hope you can teach me. Thanks!
@quiteanicechannel268
@quiteanicechannel268 5 лет назад
Hey! We did it in Cubase 9.5 (which - in germany - you can get a beginner version for ~20$ via the "Keys Special" Magazine) and only used Effects that come with Cubase. However the same effect can be achieved within every DAW and with only freeware VST-Effects. If you search for a free solution I would look into "Studio One 4 Prime" . Its the free version of a professional DAW. I did not test the current version, but i'd expect it to have all basic effects on board and perhaps even support for freeware-VST-effects. As for which effects to use, i'd suggest looking up beginner-voice-editing RU-vid Tutorials. What we did (on all track from 5:40 on): - Use a Noise-Gate to remove the noise when the singer pauses to sing - Use a De-Esser to remove hissing SSSSS-consonants - Use a Compressor and a Limiter to make the voice "appear louder" - Add a slight Reverb to make the voice seem "fuller" At 5:31 you can see all the Effects that we used. If you refer to the white-noise-high-frequency-hissing in the background at 5:45 - 5:47 (which is generally an undesired side-effect), thats just the noise of the microphone, being increased in volume (by the compressor and limiter).

Very well made video, even if the instrument track and the singing do not match optimally :-) Focusrite sounds a bit more oipen than the cheap adapter. However, in a homerecording setup, more things than just sound matter: Latency, driver support, ins and outs etc. Which is where probably an interface like the Focusrite is better. I understand that it is a lot of work to make these videos, but you should make more of them.

Here is my take on it. You need to judge it by using headphones These solution does vary in terms of noise levels. The sound card in the desktop sound the worst because the soundcard might be unshielded causing interference noise. So it tends to pick up noise from the entire pc case including the transformers and mosfets in the pc case. For the laptop, the power comes in the form of a power adapter/power brick so the noise level is lower but still is not isolated from the other components of the pc. For the cheap interface it performs very well because it is only fed the 5v power from the usb that it needs to operate. However it might struggle with other scenario where the microphone is less than ideal if the speaker is further away or is rather soft spoken. Also the impedence of the mic will be a factor. Some mics have higher impedence and thus will sound softer because more power is required to drive them thus causing more noise. It is only in situations where it is less than ideal where you start to see the cracks in the interface capabilities

The XR18 is itself an interface, so your Laptop-Soundcard shouldn't affect the sound at all. Unfortunately there are too many factors that could affect the sound, but if it's "poor", it spontanously sounds more like a misconfiguration than equipment-not-being-professional-enough.
