See how designer Emily Griffin used beadboard panelling, antiques and a watery palette to transform a drab cottage into a stylish summer house.
Emily started by replacing the drywall throughout the main living areas with beadboard panelling. She created a welcoming entryway with a country vibe by bringing in an antique bench and vintage-look mirror. The kitchen and dining areas were combined to create an open-concept space with a nine-foot dining table in the center. A servery tucked into the corner features reclaimed wood shelves. Just off the kitchen is a sitting room, where a stone fireplace steals the show. In the sunroom, a minimalist approach was taken to let the natural surroundings shine. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sophisticated feel, thanks to quiet, patterned wallpaper and a colonial-style bed. Emily took the ensuite bathroom down to the studs and added a new window, herringbone floors and shiplap walls.

Olivia Giles just a couple of corrections.... Learned in my History of Furniture class in design class, where I graduated with honors in Boston in 1986, there is no such thing as a coffee table, it a cocktail table, also, there is no such thing as a couch, it is a sofa......

Valerie Jewell I thought the Americans called it couch and the English call it sofa (although working class English often call it settee). My brother is a genius at interior design. He’s got no qualifications or degrees but he’s definitely as good as interior designers who get paid a fortune because they have.

I think the term Cottage or Cabin, refers to one's vacation home....not the size or the conveniences, or the decor...we used to own a place on a lake....we referred to it as 'going to the cabin'...meaning, going to our vacation home....and was twice the size of the home we lived in. People laughed when we referred to it as the 'cabin' ... but it was easier than saying..."we are going to that other house we own on the lake that is new and bigger than what we live in' for the weekend!

Besides the overall design, I love the fact that this video covered a huge house in under 7 minutes, not like those obnoxious 45 minute videos of RU-vidrs showing their 400 square foot studio apartments. 🤣

I love that they went against the grain, and opted to not put in an island. I really feel islands in kitchens will soon become dated in interior design. This kitchen layout is perfect in my opinion. I love this home!

Beautiful! It would be nice though to know how much the budget was for this makeover. I also wished designers would acknowledge the people who do the actual work. When she says I put a tabel there etc. - she actually commissioned somebody to do that

This is a fantastic renovation of a wonderful house. The materials and the colours that they were used are some of my favourites. But the kitchen is ergonomically completely off. It looks like the decorator has never cooked a thing in her life. The cooker is way too far away from the sink and even more far away from the refrigerator. These three areas should make a rather small triangle in order to be ergonomic and safe. The cooker should not be too far away from the sink for obvious security reasons. Imagine f.e holding a large pot full of boiling water and having to cross half of the room in order to empty it in the sink. Or having to wash a bowl while you have to attend simultaneously something that you are cooking. Or need to get some eggs and have to cross the whole room in order to rich them from the refrigerator. The best position for the cooker ( and the optimal for the operation of the extractor above the cooker) would have been in the corner, having on the right the sink and on the left the refrigerator.

The sitting room turned its back on the fireplace blocking it with huge armchairs. It should be a center piece of any cottage. Everything else looks new and highly styled directly from the pages of House and Home. Whatever history the cottage had has been lost in translation.

My very first thought when I saw the house: "This has to be the Hamptons." I LOVE how this turned out, really gorgeous. Personally, I disapprove of dining rooms being open to kitchens... if I have dinner guests, I don't want them seeing the mess in the sink.

That house is beautiful 🏡 love it and the designer made just made it look like a dream come true, this is one of the best videos i have watch about decorating, she made it look good and got furniture you can actually sit on and be confortable and not just for looks. There is no way i would call this a cottage at all. Someone that would, clearly has never been in an actual cottage. This is a large country home. And yes I know people will say in North America people live in larger homes then in other countries but still, this is NOT a cottage. Maybe the rich owners call it that to feel at one with the "simple folk" that live in the area while they vacation every year

It is a cottage in my eyes. In 1949, my aunt and uncle bought a whisky distillery worker's cottage for £60. So utterly tiny, cosy and quaint...in the Scottish Highlands. One of 5. The windows were 2 feet square. Dyed potato sacks for curtains. 4 rooms. They extended some of the rooms over the years as their family grew, and they were seriously talented in interior design. It's still cottage like from the front. Kept the same in it's originality. But by 2005, because of it's location, and it's plush, tasteful, modernised interior, it was valued at £250,000. I don't know it's value now. For me, priceless. Now, the 4th generation has been born there and still live in it. 2 feet away from the back of it, a stream still flows to the still, working distillery.
