Interior design and color theory can be pretty complicated sometimes, so we want to provide you with some easy interior design tips that can simplify things for you. Think of it as an interior design 101.
The 60-30-10 rule is one of the simplest methods to add color to your house and home in a manner that is balanced and appealing. Whether you use Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, or any other paint company, don't feel that you need to rely on the current design trends of 2021. Use this tried and true rule next time you plan to redecorate!

My style is more like 60-25-10-5 as my maximalist/English country house style demands more color. My palette is beige-red-blue-yellow/green, all in the medium range of brightness, and these colors make me so happy. The last decade of almost no color has been deadly to creativity, children and a lot of the rest of us!

Agreed. I have brown wood floors and don't feel the need to have beige/brown walls to keep in the colour family. Ignoring the floors, I would probably have 60-30 for primary and secondary colours, but then 5 - 2.5 - 2.5 for accent colours. The 60-30-10 model really eliminates many patterns unless just a repeat of the two main ones. Nothing new introduced.

Question! Do your metals have to be considered in this rule if they are different colors? For example wrought iron in a room with no other black.

Dear James, Nice video! For a kitchen, I calculated that my ceiling is 30% and my cabinets are 10%..... Therefore, my floor, walls, trim, and doors would need to be the remaining 60%. I am hoping having floors, walls, doors, and trim the same color is OK. ??? The floor will be a color adjacent to the walls....

Very informative as always thank you! I have a question would do recommend Chantilly Lace or simply white for a home with high ceilings and gets plenty of natural light in every room I’m contrasting the wall color with onyx black for the stair case wood! And the furniture is neutrals thank you in advance!

In today's interior design and decorating it seems to me that everyone is afraid of color. They are going with Grey's and beige and off whites. To me this is boring and really sucks. My last living room had pistachio green walls with white trim, a navy blue velvet sofa, two periwinkle blue chairs, a light blue Grey parsons table and throws with blue, turquoise, yellow, periwinkle and red throws. It was amazing. I don't care if boring is in style, I intend to put color in my house.

A question I cant get answered. How do you deal with all the brown in a room if you have wood floors everywhere and no carpet.? All literature i read about the rule states that in the 60 part you include the walls. If thats true if you have wood floors your 30 will always be brown in each room. Should the wood floors be ignored as that means everyone 30 that has wood floors will be shades of brown? What if you put carpet down and still have a fair amount of brown showing in the wood floor?

I would choose complimentary colors that show off what's great about the wood floors.
