In this video, I go over the interior design trends that need to go! These are all my opinion, but I think there are some trends and items that need to die for 2021. 2021 trends are leaning towards warmer colors, and more color in general and this means some trends of the past like the white kitchen and grey living rooms are less popular than they were. In this video I break down the trends and styles that we will see less of in 2021 and moving forward!
This is all lighthearted fun, so please don't take offence if you couch or style is featured here!

I usually try to keep it positive around here, but I thought I'd try something different and fun to start the new year! I usually don't use the word ugly, but for this video and for some sofas, I made an exception! 😂 Don't take this too seriously - I love you all! Even if you love kitschy farmhouse! 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾❤️

The fact we put anything but fan above the stove is beyond me. It's always going to get residue all over it and it's mere existence makes my cooking area feel a lot smaller. Plus, the cabinets are hard to reach and I can't use my stove for balance when I'm trying to grab things out of it.

My biggest design pet peeve is the neutral nursery. Your baby does not care how trendy their room looks! Your baby needs a functional, colorful room to learn and explore in and white walls with grey arrowhead blankets aren't gonna do that for ya.
@liisaky
@liisaky 3 года назад
I am not sure if this is scientifically true, but contrasting and bright colours should stimulate babies’ sense of perspective and space, so an all grey nursery would not only be sad, but nit stimulating enough

I have several interior decorating books from the 1940's. I constantly find myself going back to that era. The colours were beautiful, the kitchens were functional and fun. Going back a little further you can get into the fabulous art deco styles. I don't even bother with modern trends for the most part. The really good stuff has already been done.

And in the past it used to be about something beautiful but always useful as well. Nowadays there are a lot of “aesthetic “ things but really úseles in real life like the “all open shelves” in the kitchen or maybe the white sofás 😑 like really, a white sofa?? Maybe with no babies, no pets and NO sitting down on it ever 🤓
@ThisIsMyFullName
@ThisIsMyFullName 2 года назад
I wouldn't say all the good stuff has already been done, minimalism and industrial is a good example of that. It's more the fact that there's a lot of crap being done that overshadows the good, because a lot of people are playing interior designers without even understanding the basic styles (victorian, art deco, mid-century, postmodernism and so on). In the 1940s interior design was done by professionals for magazines, which the public then read and made their homes look like. That's why older interior design seems so much better, they were done by professional who had a vision and an eye for design.

As a designer, I enjoy your design videos more than any others I've seen. I agree with you on virtually everything and it is the sign of a good designer when one can appreciate the aesthetic of the client. But I do have to tell you, my sister bought the marshmallow reclining sofas for her den - three of them - cupholders and all. With a 60" TV, I gotta say 8 people can be more comfortable than at a theater. Also, she'd had them all of two days when I dropped a fresh cup of coffee -cream and sugar- all over one seat. I was horrified at myself and she just laughed and said, "Grab a rag, it wipes right up!" She had already "christened" her own seat.

@@diannt9583 I want a monochrome kitchen because every one I've ever had growing up has usually been on the dingy side, XD. Also, you can always accent the room with other things. Grey/silver, white, and black pair well with pretty much everything, so maybe get like some red pot holders and dish towels, and some red cannisters for sugar, flour, and something else. Or a bowl of red apples. Or oranges (and they can totally be fake, lol). Or a vase of flowers. But I feel I could do more when a kitchen is a basic color than if the person decided to make it blue (though I do like most blues), or yellow, or olive green...or even a red kitchen. If you're moving into a new home, now you have to renovate the space to make it your own instead of just adding colorful accents to a good, if not "meh" kitchen. "Meh" can be spruced up, but I can't do crap except start all over when someone strongly imposed their favorite color all over the room, lol.

OMFG when my mom bought her house she bought it in part because it had a gorgeous wood herringbone accent wall that stretched through the living room and kitchen. And the guy who was selling it told her that the real estate guy he had been talking to wanted to paint over the wall because it would make the house harder to sell. And just, what? Granted, it isn't a traditional herringbone wall since the wood is intentionally frayed and the stain is a deep red, but it adds so much personality to the house. Glad the previous owner refused to paint it over because otherwise the house would have been just your average cookie cutter rambler home.

I can get all the chickens, cows, goats, et al, that I want, simply by stepping outside the door. All that bric-a-brac is nothing but more work. Dust is an irritating reality when you live on a dirt road - which is why open shelving is not a high priority here, either. LOL

Then again, I'm a trained chef and don't need many gadgets as long as I have my knives, a grater and a hand blender. And I deep-clean my kitchen at least once a month anyway because living on a farm and hence having to take care of our produce, I can't get around it anyway. Admittedly though, my kitchen is mainly a workspace where interior design is far from a priority. On top of that, I've always tried to stay away from trends and just did what felt comfortable and worked for me and once that's achieved, it can stay that way pretty much forever.

Many people make the mistake of picking a nice color that turns out far too dark for their space. If you go to a home improvement store, just look at the assortments of greys. There are warm greys which have more yellow and cool greys which have more white. Grey is considered a neutral color like white, beige. You can put so many things with it. A very soft and very light silvery grey i find soothing like gentle mist. I completely agree about open shelving! Most people have way too much ugly stuff which needs hiding. That being said, I have gone the Farmhouse 2.0 direction with my half wall of a few open shelves and other surfaces on which to place clear and pretty jars to make part of a pantry. My dishes are 3 colors and I’ve done away with plastic (containers, straws, etc). I’ve purchased some old ironstone and simple white pieces and added a punch with some vintage chrome and a bit of 50s red with a patriotic blue. It’s looking quite eclectic with a pared down retro look. I agree with you Nick about farmhouse being, many times, quite inauthentic. I live in a rural area in a tiny town and have fields around. Cows and chickens are near. I have no “ Fresh eggs” signs. I’ve not used decor except with a few plants. Cutting boards I use are grouped together, and there is natural medium toned woods. I use a real Hoosier for a coffee/ tea area and baking needs. Maybe my style is Farmhouse 3.0!

I think we should all surround ourselves with whatever feels like home.

My parents have those and they are getting ready to downsize a beautiful 100 year old craftsman home and they offered their puffy sofas to my daughter who is setting up house. The look of horror and panic on my daughter’s face was absolute comedy…The inner monologue was probably ‘How do I get myself out of this gracefully and tactfully.’ The size was the perfect escape approach. I don't know if they got tired near the end or saw the perfect opportunity, but they left the "ugh" on the wall, put a frame around it, and in my opinion it reflects such perfect energy knowing the story behind it that there's been no better art in anyone's house I've ever visited.

So we had to have an islands to have work space. The previous owner had put in a penasula which I hated because it cut off the kitchen and was difficult to walk around. When we went house shopping years ago, the houses were all grey, white, beige, and PINK (of all colors!) Pink was especially favored in the bathrooms. The only thing worse than a pink bathroom was one that had been badly painted over in white, showing occasional random whorls of pink through the white. Take my word for it, when I say you don't realize just how badly its painted until you walk in there already feeling nauseated... and then it's too late for you.

And save me from endless signage and attempts at wisdom displayed on every square inch of blank wall and shelf, including the weirdinv itations to purchase lemonade, chop a tree, or purchase a pig... aaaarrrrgggghhh.
