Thank you for giving some props to the original brick - so, SO tired of flippers and trenders painting brick or stone. Reminds me of the old trend of 'covering over those dated hardwood floors - with orange and brown plastic tiles, yay!' which of course did a lot of damage to the floor and was expensive to undo, but at least it can be undone. there's no "un-effing" painted brick: sandblast it till you pass out, but it will always be corrupted now.
Garrett I also need to tell you that you have personally encouraged my husband to have an interest in decorating. We’ve been together for 30 years, and up until now he would be happy sitting on hay bales with an electrical spool for a table. The first video he saw of yours, he said was like someone opened a fire hose into his brain about the importance of considering decorating your space! He’s a very smart man, but no artistic talent 😂
I love the way you softly steer the rooms in the right direction without being overly critical or judgmental about the space. You just have such a great way of presenting information. ❤
I love when you explain what works and what does not. So many times, I can see what works and what doesn't, but I don't always know why. I need that understanding to be able to apply it to my home. I learn so much every time I watch your videos. Thank you, Garrett!
*Critique Videos* . I love these vids Garrett. I clean homes and you have no idea how often I want to "tweak" spaces, dis-connection, flow and clutter really bother me. My biggest pet peeves are the "floating" (aka useless coffee table) , the rug island and furniture pushed against every wall in a large room.
@@rainbomg Good streamlined pieces, keep throws/pillows minimal, appropriately sized decorative “boxes” on tables for storage. A good buffet/console with doors can hold extra accessories to be switched out/rotated periodically. Too many items on furniture looks like a store merchandised display rather than a home.
Hate ceiling fans but where I live it so hot they are needed in my bedrooms and office where I spend most of my time. Love the look of leather but I wish I didn’t buy one due to the heat they hold. I have a rug in my great room but planned on removing it for the summer months as you suggested in another video. Love your content
In that first bedroom, I’d frost those glass walls-there’d still be light flowing through, but they wouldn’t have to share their everything with everyone!
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying. Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and become one of our very valued subscribers.
Thank you for the great tips! In the last example I had not noticed the air conditioner until you mentioned it, then I wondered why the green sticker had not been removed? It would have blended even more seamlessly!
When my husband and I took our first trip to NYC, the picture of the room looked great. It was so small that we had to take turns passing at the end of the bed!😂Still, it was worth it just to be there and loved every minute of it! Also, I think a nice rug in the correct scale for the furniture in a living room makes all the difference.
I loved seeing how the rooms looked huge but in reality they are not. I feel like I got to take a peek behind the scenes and I love behind the scenes moments 😂. I am glad to know that not everyone who’s room is featured in articles and whatnot are not all Uber rich with these massive rooms.
I love these videos where you have us look at spaces and you talk about them. Such a good educational tool! That last room was stunning. I dont know how they got that accent wall color but wow.
This video is full of your signature wit and great tips, Garrett! I love the recommendations to make a few changes to elevate a space rather than throwing everything out and heading out to shop at a couple of home stores!!! I also love you how you reference back to things you've discussed in other videos, such as grouping things in threes, and rug size. You build our decorating confidence by reinforcing other tips you've provided, and that keeps this learning growing! LOVE THAT FOR US!!! 🤗🥰🤗
Loved this video as I love them all! But I need one on how to decorate with mishmash antiques you’ve inherited, really love, but don’t necessarily go together. And I hate mid century modern, enough already! Can we do something on how to tell if grandma’s drum table is worth something or just just old cheap junk?
I LOVED the last room you showed. I struggle with tying everything together, but still feeling like things are not in sets. Your videos are helping define the style I really want to acheive so thank you!
Another great one! I noticed the lighting in the first two images was mixed metals. I’d love to know your take on mixing metals - and forgive me if you’ve already touched on this subject. Also, I’ve watched the “jealousy” video more than once because I needed to go back and take notes. It was done in such a fun and cleaver way and is my current favorite. I know you touched on a number of subjects in that video, but I hope you can squeeze a few more ideas out for a part 2! My fingers are crossed.
Thanks so much for sharing, and watching Sonja! I'm glad you are enjoying. Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and become one of our very valued subscribers.
I love it when you show room layouts and how to easily improve the look. I’m kind of over having a tv over the fireplace. I get that sometimes It can’t be helped, but your idea of moving it to another wall works for me!
Thank you for this video, visuals are so helpful. Also, really liked the way you showed how much the angle of photography can affect the impression of size in a space. I love the suggestions you have for improvements in these rooms, very practical and easy to visualize.
I agree, this makes design so much more attainable and easy to understand. Pinpointing what could be improved helps me so much - I can better identify what I could tweak in my own place.
Great video! I really like the design advice that is shared while looking at an actual space. Things like adding the 3rd barstool, use of color, furniture arrangement etc... I can visualize why your suggestions will work to improve the space.
Hey, Garrett. I found your channel about a week ago and decided I like your analysis, so I'm now a subscriber. Some comments on one of the examples - I think the open space with the leather sofas and TV above the fire place needs a rug between the fireplace and the sofa in order to define the space as a entertainment area. I like open concept, but don't you think we all need a way to characterize (in our minds) that certain areas perform certain functions? Also I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of 3 chairs to 2 hanging lights. My sense of balance insists on this! I didn't know it was a "rule", but that rule makes perfect sense. I'd also like to reface the brick around the fireplace with a deep gray slate so the couch can be a sleek black leather, rather than that puffy big brown marshmallow that doesn't really look right with the ascetic of the space. I'd suggest a TV support that allows the TV to be tilted down because you're right, that TV is too high for comfortable viewing. My guess is the brown color of the couch is to pick up the color of the bricks and the puffiness is to provide some softness in a space that has a lot of hard lines. Refacing the brick surround would allow for a more harmonious color for the sofa. And a sleek leather sofa can be softened by a blanket throw or big natural wool pillows (You know with loosely spun alpaca or llama yarn). Take away the big ottoman and put in a soft rug in a light gray variegated shade. Maybe replace the ottoman with foot stools matching the new couch and add side tables with lamps. Something I want to be honest about; I don't have any formal training, but I have a strong sense of color and spacial balance and I love to decorate. And I'm learning from you!
Yay! I’m glad you are enjoying, and thanks for sharing. Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. 😊😊😊
ALBERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The highlight of the video :D For that library with the transom window inside, I'd have added a teal and charcoal grey rug to pull things together. I loved the pop of teal/turquoise, especially in the vase on the book cases, so I think having a rug with those 2 colours in it would add so much charm.

Perfect balance between education and entertainment. Thank you for sharing your incredible talents with us. Our home is an octagon open concept, with wings off both sides. High vaulted ceiling with a fireplace in the middle. Every unusual design. If possible, I would love to see some problem solving for unique spaces. Thank you again.
Hello Garrett and sweet Albert!. Since you asked, in the next to last room, I really don't care for the white couch up against the white wall and that room def needs a rug.
I’m in the middle of renovating our kitchen and living room. And because of the placement of the island and the doors and the stairways, I’m stuck with having the TV over the fireplace. I plan on finding or perhaps, creating, if need be, a program for the television that can display artwork to make the TV not just a piece of electronics, but also a piece of art. I know I’ve seen this before, but I’m going to have to dig to find it.
Hello 👋 I’m over the matchy, matchy homes 😂 I love homes that really tells me something about the person who lives there. This weekend we visited three friends and I kid you not all three had the exact same mass produced chachis on the coffee table, I couldn’t help chuckling to myself.
The TV above a fireplace is a dreadful thing. I would also have reoriented the sofa and TV the way you would, although I put the TV much lower, so that it's exactly at eye level when I'm schlepping comfortably in the recliner. IOW, those family pictures would have to go somewhere else.
Turning that rug might help, too, on that fourth photo, and bringing the furniture closer. I agree on that rug and those pillows on the fifth photo. I have an HVAC system like they do in the last photo.
Another great video, thank you. The television monitor over a heat source can't be healthy for the electronics. If the fireplace is wood, it generates ash. ❤ Albert
The last living area is just to die for! Wow! My project this year is to move my tv from over the fireplace to a cool piece of furniture. Thank you…amazing video!
I agree with you on most everything and usually do, however, I do not like that last room in the least. Love the leather chair but that’s about all. Just different taste I guess. Love seeing Albert! TFS
Loved today’s video! I love watching your videos for great ideas. I would love for you to critique my space once we have completed construction. We are three months away (hopefully) from moving into our home. Love little Albert!
Turquoise pillows. I would not have gotten rid of them, I would have added more turquoise in the room. Would I ever get turquoise pillows? No. They would clash with my turquoise couch.
These are some great, realistic tips. I dig it. Thanks! In the southern states we NEED ceiling fans. They have some more glammy, interesting versions now though, and they look a bit better. They function like a floor fan, but on the ceiling. Safer for those of us who are tall, as well. The room with the fan that looks like an airplane propeller is pretty cool!
Great video and realistic ideas about how to improve spaces without a total redo. I would just like to put it out there that regardless of the aesthetics, there are TV mounts made specifically for over the fireplace that let you pull the TV down to watch in a comfortable position and then put it back in place when you are not watching. I am getting one that does the reverse, so I will be able to raise my TV for watching, due to the placement of a window that I want to keep because of the light it generates and the fact that it opens up the room. Love the pups!
I've been subscribed for a little while now, but hadn't commented to let you know yet....but I guess you said it so extra charmingly in this video that I just couldn't resist! I've already learned so much from your videos.....I'm quietly storing away all this valuable information and good design sense for the day when I actually have the opportunity to use it. My favorite ideas so far from you are: vintage picture frames and itty bitty lamps everywhere! Can't wait to learn more from you in your next video.
Hello dear Garrett ! You are right about everything, as usual. My eyes always gravitate to what’s on the walls. Most places leave a lot to be desired on walls, or the artwork lack of it. My husband and I are in love with the artwork piece behind you when I check your videos.
I agree with all of your recommendations. I cannot believe how many spaces I see ( even in “styled” photos in magazines) that have coffee tables floating in the middle of a room. AND tiny area rugs-It drives me bonkers🤨
Just found your channel. I really enjoyed the video! Love your ideas for improving the spaces. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks so much! 😊 I'm glad you are enjoying. We regularly post 2 videos a week so please take a moment to support the channel by subscribing, and putting bell notifications on so you won't miss a video. I appreciate it, and have a lovely day! :)
Hello Garrett and Albert! ❤ I loved this video and videos where you give tips on how to correct these spaces because most of us live in spaces like these. Love that for us. Thank you for sharing your expertise! I continue to learn so much from you and you are so very entertaining/inspiring!
Wait! Don't think i didn't notice in your intro you added a finger gun, and paired it with a sultry, seductive look. Lol.😄 My condo is a similar layout to the first interior you showed (minus the on suite glass bathroom). The struggle is real between aesthetics and actual livable arrangements with storage.😮💨 I opted for a pair of sturdy, long, wooden nesting coffee tables. It gives me the option of using one as bench for guests when needed, and enough length for the proportion of the living room. Im really loving these kinds of videos from you Garrett!! Have a great week!🖤🖤🖤

Such a helpful video! I have a combo mudroom/den area that I’ve been trying to figure out a layout for and this video helped give me some ideas. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching, and please take a moment it you haven’t already to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family.
Is there a distance in inches a coffee table should be out from sofa? I see so many pictures with coffee tables so far out I couldn't use it to place a glass of wine.
It is so amazing that at the right camera angle a room could appear massive! Love your statute..quick question…I feel stupid, but who is it? HI Mr. Albert 🐶❤
I have room for 3 pendants (haven't found the perfect ones yet,) so do I get 4 or 5 stools? I was leaning toward 4, but now you have me wondering. My island is 12 feet long. Thanks Garrett.
Good Morning dear Garrett, Thank you for the video. I had been away for 4/5 days as my friends family had an emergency and unfortunately the outcome was not great. However we all have to restart:) So, as usual good visual class. You exude kindness when you speak about any subject matter and that’s one thing to always remember and relearn. Thanks for doing that:) I agree to many points. If something that caught my attention was bulky drapes in the first bedroom. I reckon if you have small space, which is never an issue, design it with light fabrics, so for privacy they could do double curtain,a block out shades topped by linen sheer. The times you need privacy pull both, otherwise stack the blockout and keep the sheers on. And for sure the length of both the curtains are just kissing the floor 😘 That’s my curated knowledge about design:) Have a lovely week ahead!! Stay blessed stay loved and oh yes thank you little Mr 🐶 Ramani
Love this video and what a great way to start the week. Regarding the last room, I didn't see the AC until you pointed it out. You do so much more than advise us - you say something and then prove it to us. TVs are a challenge - too high, too low, too big, too small, too ugly (never too pretty). They are almost as bad at the old TVs that looked like a piece of furniture but at least you knew where to put those. I'm short so it is nearly impossible for me to watch a TV when it's mounted above a fireplace. In my home, we have mounted the TV on what appears to be an art easel with wheels. When we're not watching TV, we roll into the corner but because it's open, it's not so bulky. Thanks for your continual reminders to make a space personal. Love family photos and things that have meaning.
The last space is indeed beautiful but (I NEVER thought I'd say this) there are too many plants/flowers. I love having plants and organic things in a room but why so many little vases?
Thank you...I always find value in your videos but TODAY was full of info for me...We just downsized into a 2350 sq ft home (age 77 year old seniors) and I could not decide on the number of bar stools...The 3 pendants/4 bar stools into was just what I needed Now...can you tell me how to hide my tv cables from the side. We mounted the tv on the wall on a swivel mount and it is out from the wall...How do I frame that or do SOMETHING to hide the side view...Can you put that in one of your videos? The other issue I have is my dining table is 42" wide, how wide is appropriate for my chandelier over my table and I want a ceiling medallion. How wide many inches round? You have me considering scale on everything! Love that for me! and yes! some of my friends do need you.
Yet another great video, thank you, Garrett. I am over here on the other side of the Great Pond, shouting to the cat: ' oh, oh! He is not feeling it!' Guessing along of how to improve a space, yelling: put the sofa and the chairs on the rug! Ha ha! The last, so marvelous space is very impressive. I would only add some different layers of lighting for the evening. It is so thrilling when you come out with a new episode, I still have so very much to learn. You see, I am an eager student of yours. I love that for you and for me. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
Garret i know your not a ceiling fan person I live in Adelaide in south Australia it's very dry and hot we constantly use our fans with air-conditioning as 3/4yr it's warm to hot like 46c degrees So we have 3 fans in our house bedrooms and lounge But are more ornate
I really don’t like the last room, I also have a long, narrow family room and I understand it’s hard to decorate. (I’m very sure you could do it though!) I think the artwork over the cabinet looks out of place and I don’t really see a comfortable place to sit and watch the TV. If the TV is there, as you said, for occasional glances while your reading a book, I don’t see a comfortable place for that either.
Hello Garrett. I always enjoy your videos and learn so much. I have a problem I hope you can help me with. I have a huge window, wall to wall, in my rented studio apartment. It has one large stationary window and two side windows that open into the apartment. Problem...the three individual windows have a solar blind with the accompanying masthead right under the ceiling. I want to hang shears to offset the cold look of the black metal frames and all that glass. I now know how a goldfish feels. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hugs
Thanks so much for your very lovely comment, and for sharing! Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and join our subscriber family. :)
My favorite one was towards the end, with the interesting art work where the rug needed moving a scootch. With all the unique and wonderful art out there, it continues to baffle me why someone would buy that cheap "trendy" junk from Home Goods or such. It's a total rip off too when you consider what you're getting for the money as opposed to sourcing some nicely framed original or vintage. Same baffling occurs with distracting flat screen over a lovely fireplace. I reserved that space for a large multi metals mid century sculpture and some original watercolors leaning on mantle that someone purchased during a holiday in Paris in 1963. ( beautifully written on back), thrifted for $7 the pair, along with a few books and old brass and gifted Sascha Brastoff Vase , you know, things you can't buy at a contemporary mall. HGTV needs you instead of what they have, Dear... Masses in America needs your help... badly! 😂 🙌🏼
Thanks so much Karen! I appreciate it. The masses just have to hit the subscribe button, and turn the bell notifications on if they want to learn, and I will bring them useful non fluff information they need every week, and it's free to everyone! Not to many opportunities like that around anymore. :)
