I'm all for a tile floor in the kitchen. I want to be able to easily clean, and not worry about water spilling. I use a chefs mat in front of my range, since that is where I spend the most time.

I’ve always had a tile floor in my kitchen so I agree with you that it’s practical. Now I’m in an open concept space and I couldn’t cut off the kitchen with tile so I was stuck with wood floors in my kitchen. I did have minor flooding that created an issue but I was still under builder warranty, so it worked out. I did get extra planks of wood to have on reserve just in case there’s a problem in the future.

I have to do in my remodel and my hard wood is pretty unmatchable since it’s from the 50’s along with us removing a wall and incorporating a laundry in the room - so tile it is

I've spilled a whole 1L bottle of olive oil and I just don't have the time or energy to worry about my floors, too, so I love tile. Tile is everything. Tile doesn't fear heat or humidity 😂 Not to mention tile is the norm for (italian) apartments from a certain era and if it's looked nice all those decades I trust it will keep looking good in the future.

I would be surprised if a wooden floor in the kitchen is something that people who cook daily would recommend. It's understandable for people who only cook on weekends, if at all, but everyday? Don't think so.

Tile is good, but not grouted tile. Even if you seal it, eventually the grout will absorb grease and be almost impossible to clean. The same applies to a backsplash behind the stove. No grout!

Biggest mistake people do in kitchen renos: they don't install drawers under the counters. It's much easier to get stuff out from the back if you have drawers. Best thing I ever installed in my kitchen. Keep cupboards for your uppers and don't do open shelves around your cooking area.
@mrphoenixgrey
@mrphoenixgrey Год назад
Yes! Team drawers, always! You utilize all the space you can in that height. I always prioritize drawers over cabinets in all my kitchen design, unless the client specifies otherwise.
@jenniferkannapel9450
@jenniferkannapel9450 9 месяцев назад
YES!! Ty! After having all lowers drawers only in a kitchen a few years ago I seriously wonder why every kitchen designer does not just refuse to put those stupid old style door bases in any new kitchen ever again!! Everyone should be talking about this and enlightening the masses to just say NO to lower door bases! Ok I know that drawers cost more but it is the difference of buying a car that actually runs or one that looks ok but is useless;-) Kitchen renos are too costly to cut that corner. Always chose drawers.

@HanneleKorpela53
@HanneleKorpela53 2 месяца назад
@@LiberatedMind1 Well, if you are obsessed cleaning, then yes. Think all the grease that spread in the kitchen, when cooking, and then like cherry on the top, a little dust on top of it. Every dish you take out to use, you have wash it first so you can use it. Idea is cool, and kind of a show stopper, if you then have nice looking dishes to put on those open shelves. For me, not very practical.

I wish you'd mentioned double kitchen islands in this video. I don't get why anyone not running a professional catering business out of their kitchen, would want two kitchen islands. They've become so trendy lately, but i think they look ridiculous in a home kitchen.
@margaretschaufele6502
@margaretschaufele6502 Месяц назад
I agree. The only way I could see that they would be useful is if you have more than 2 cooks in the kitchen at one time, or if the 2nd island is really more of kitchen table or bar set up and has little kitchen-specific storage so the main kitchen island is your extra storage and counter/prep space.

Just gonna say that you don't use enough photos to illustrate your points. As a person who isn't familiar with all the design terms, when you say one thing, but don't directly represent that idea visually, it makes it really hard to keep up with you. Then I either have to let it pass me by, or take the effort to pause the video, find an example (which may or may not be what you meant), only to then come back and do it all over when you say the next unfamiliar term 3 seconds later. Tl;dr: please use more photos.

Love the back splash being the same as the countertops! Great advice! Also thinking about the possibility of hiding electrical outlets-another great tip. Even though hiding the outlets may be expensive, I rather see where I can forgo something in another area to save on money as the hidden look is so gorgeous.

Shaker cabinet face seemed obvious to me BUT the bathroom vanity that came with the apartment has shaker doors and I have never been able to get the inner corners clean ( toothbrushes, toothpicks, microfiber) - includingwhen i stripped, primed and painted theme. 🤨 And that is just dust. I cannot imagine getting kitchen grease out of Shaker corners. So, I choose to stay with the flat front kitchen doors that came with the apartment. The colors I painted them and the hardware I swapped out give it enough of a traditional / farmhouse / French countryside look for now.

On the whole I agree with you. That said, a few of these recommendations are only possible if you build a fully custom kitchen. My builder didn’t allow me to run countertop to backsplash so I opted for a timeless honed marble picket backsplash, sealed it very well, and added decorative cutting boards behind the cooktop so I could protect it from cooking messes. Cutting boards are easily replaced. It’s been a year and so far it’s working out well for us. Plus the honed marble has minimal veining and is timeless so I have no regrets.

In regards to kitchen islands being "outdated" and "never having enough counter space"...... I am a weirdo when it comes to kitchens(which I freely admit and accept): I PREFFER smaller and galley style kitchens completely separate from the rest of the space. I say that as someone who does cook nearly every day and enjoys it.....I just like the efficiency of having EVERYTHING "at hand" or just a few steps away, as opposed to constantly having to navigate around the island. But I also don't use and therefore don't buy/collect a lot of "small appliances" and other counter space eaters......no coffee pot, no microwave, no toaster, no blender, no mixer, no knife block, etc......like I said, I'm a wierdo, lol

And when I have guests over I don't want them to see me at any time busy and stressed out in the kitchen. I just close the door and nobody will ever see me or the mess I left behind for the moment!! And yes! Islands are just in my way and not needed in a seperate kitchen. I have a big kitchen with some space for a little dining table big enough for the 4 of us. And for guests we have a big dining area in the living room a few steps away from the kitchen. Just PERFECT for us!

I will put vinyl laminate floor in my small kitchen and continue the flooring into the dining area, it will make my small space look bigger. And vinyl laminate is so easy to clean. Spills float on the top and dont ruin the floor. My friend has wood laminate in her kitchen and water has started to damage it. As far as the double countertop height, it is useful in a small kitchen to block the view form the dining table. It hides the clutter and the mess. A double height countertop could also have different height if you want to have a baker's surface to knead bread, otherwise you may need a stool if you are too small to extend the arms well. It all depends what you prepare in your kitchen.

Ditto question. I am remodeling- currently ordering everything- and have decided to eliminate the island seating as it takes too much space from traffic flow, and the dining table is adjacent anyway (a few feet away). I am actually shaving a few inches off the island countertop for more walking space. This means that the island back wall now becomes much more visible and important to get right. I am considering Zellige tiles for their artistry and don’t expect the unevenness to be an issue below counter. (I believe backspash and full wall-window surrounds will be unglazed natural Zellige, this is near 100 square feet and my countertop is black so I won’t wrap that up the wall…. What would you recommend that is light in color for light-bouncing, and will add texture to an entire wall, in lieu of a light terracotta look???) Side note, I am installing Invisacook under honed granite in/ on the island (with soapstone kitchen sink off-island). So I am going to have a clean countertop that is actually the island cooktop. It will be charcoal- near black and there’s a significant amount of other countertop that will be the same, with maple cabinets). So again this becomes an island that can be used and “merchandised” strategically.

I disagree using wooden floor in the kitchen especially you live in a tropical country. I used to live in an apartment with a parquet flooring in the kitchen and the floor warps after months of accidental spillage and leakage. It got so bad that the owner found out there was mold growing UNDERNEATH the flooring.

Only piece of advice I wouldn’t take is the pendant lights… I have boys..my eldest is heading towards 6 foot 6… 196cm… pendant lights, do not work for us. Inset led is the way to go.

Listen up folks... He is probably 100% correct about the comfort factor hard wood can bring to a kitchen, but let's be clear....it is a pain in the D*@k to clean and you will go crazy trying. For a kitchen, you need something that has at least a little bit of a pattern in it or you will just switch to takeout permanantly.

Do you think the main sink should be in the island or just a prep sink? I've gravitated towards it being in front of a window ideally facing the yard.

'Hard flooring comfort?' If the shoe is well made and the heel is high enough (at least 9 inches).....that will cushion and absorb any shock factor!.

I dont understand why anyone would use a slab backsplash. Too much use of a beautiful stone undervalues its uniqueness and makes it look static and gaudy. Its even worse than a mosaic tile job.

And yes subway tiles are hideous. Even when they were in fashion (15 years ago?), they were still ugly.

I'm in the middle of a reno - We stuck with good old fashioned visible appliances in white/stainless because those 'panel ready cabinet depth' models were TWICE the price for less space and quality.

I never understood putting cooktops on islands. It feels like Benihana's.
@Bobrogers99

I agree! Downdraft venting is ineffective, and if the island incorporates a breakfast bar, it's dangerous for those seated near the cooktop.

Solution for a "trendy" kitchen, actually do a classic, timeless, AND functional kitchen. Then add a picture of a high "trendy" kitchen. You'll get tired to watch that picture in no time. And you can change it to next "trendy" kitchen. Fun and less expensive.

OMG! The previous owners of our '70s house "remodeled" the kitchen. It looked like a DYI neighborhood gay bar that did weekend drag shows. They weren't gay. We are. We fixed all of that.

Can you have absolute granite on the counter and amazonite slab in the backsplash. I love amazonite but don’t want to overwhelm the space. The cabinets are flat white and the windows have black frames.

With kitchens, how much you spend depends on how long you’re going to live in that home. If it’s your forever home, knock yourself out but, if not, set a budget. A kitchen should work in cohesion with the rest of the home space and not jar with it and think long term.
