Interior designer Shonali Mahajan’s home is an arts and crafts paradise

Art and craft are at the heart of architect and interior designer Shonali Mahajan’s 1000-sq.ft. home in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill. On one hand are large, striking paintings by Sudharshan Shetty and Riyas Komu and on the other, there are small wonders and objects of desire such as a black-and-white bone inlay coffee table by House of Things and ceramic playthings by Claymen. Throughout the two-bedroom home, Shonali, who runs design firm Studio Wodehouse, also showcases the work of her contemporaries - Josmo Studio who have outfitted the guest bedroom with a handsome solid wood desk and bed with a leather headrest while a three-tiered bookshelf by SĀR Studio making a statement in the living room. Overall, this house has an artsy design with crafts donning every aspect.

I've taken quite a bit of inspiration from this home- because I too have red floors in my house, and was stumped on how to make it work. Gorgeous space.

I like everything...even the cherry floors as my eye is getting so bored and weary with all the light-toned, bleached and gray woods...the cherry has a warm, exotic feel to it and goes well with the lighter furniture and the colorful rugs. Nicely done.

VERY Niiiiice! ALL of the art work is Beautiful!!!! Lovvvvvve that huge pic of that beautiful man - A-MAZINGGG!!!! The other beautiful pieces, such as that table 😱 and the pieces that are placed throughout as decor are unique and so interesting!! Again, very nice!!! Simple and Elegant!!

Me on the other hand was just sitting and accounting the amount spent and as irony i am furnishing My home from scratch too , so I know the very honest yet truly brutal cost of everything 😂

Enjoyed this comfortable beautifully put together home. I’d not thought of black doors ….wondering if that might work on the inside doorways & even entryways to halls etc on the interior to give the illusion of a larger space. It’s nice to see that large art (man looking upwards) as it “uplifts” the spirit & is an inspiring piece setting a good mood.

Good and well organised house. But… the carpets looked all out of place. I mean they were not laid out properly and doesn’t serve the purpose as they should. Just give it a thought.

I like it! I'm assuming it's a rental & that's why they couldn't change the floors or paint the walls? The floors are pretty ugly on their own, but I like the way they've used rust elements in the furniture to sort of blend the floors in a bit.

The floors are cherrywood floors! They are known for their rich characteristic reddish hues and soft yet durable. Only fools would change them.

I wish Indian designers would incorporate Indian-ness into their design rather than blindly emulating the western interior decor space. Nothing very unique about large artwork, curtains increasing height or mixing old with new.

The space looks nice but who puts wood flooring in India's weather? Wood is a good insulator in colder climates and is therefore a material of choice in the western world. But it just doesn't make sense in Mumbai's humidity. Like the scale of the art, although African subject matter reflects imperialist mindset.

@@vmurt She said it is cherry wood. @ Gautami N FYI, wood is used as flooring in many South East Asian countries - they just use tropical woods that are suitable to the region.

Ignorant. You can tell she is APPRECIATING African culture. Only a fool like yourself would assume that just because someone incorporates African art they are Imperialist. The fact that she has an Indian man's portrait as well negates your unobservant opinion.
