A few months ago, Damon conducted his first interview with the underground legend Roy Kristensen, author of Imhotep Zine and conductor of the final interview with Deathspell Omega. They spoke primarily about his contact with Deathspell and why the fascination with this mysterious band is so strong amongst their fans. What makes them so special to Roy? How much, or how little, does the man in contact with them for 13 years know about their inner workings? Find out in this episode!

A friend has pointed out a mispronunciation on my part. I said “St-eh-fahn-ē Boosh-é”, when in actuality it is pronounced “St-eh-fahn Boosh”. My apologies.

Totally agree concerning FAS, it's the pinnacle of the whole genre. The stars is aligned on that album, everything is a masterpiece. Songwriting, musical skills and production...

It’s completely otherworldly. My favorite part was when Roy said something like “I love that album. I hate that album...” haha. Pure passion there

That album made me love black metal. Nothing is like it and not aged a day since it release.

A guy did a fantastic remaster of the album on RU-vid which cleared up some of the muddy mix of the original, made some of the ambience on the album louder, and it really made the album be shown for what it truly is. I can only assume that the band did not have the same budget back then as they would have now. The album sounds even more terrifying and a lot is revealed. I can't remember the channel name exactly but Im sure if you search DsO remaster you'd find it if you're interested.

@@GyroLamb Agree. Personally I prefer listening to this version of the album. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jt5V6UdnBFw.html

I like how us Deathspell Omega fans are basically fanatics who are obsessed with the band. I think the mystery is interesting to people also, its something that humans love, a good mystery and its rare these days in the internet age and in music in general. But I do think there's something different about DsO fans, maybe some strange connection with the music that goes beyond explanation almost like a kinship with the band or kindred spirits. Or at least that's how i feel. Like I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of Deathspell Omega fans are sort of intellectual and intensely cerebral types of people. Maybe I can just speak for myself but I certainly recognized right away in the aesthetics, symbolism, and depth and even the sort of internal struggle explored in the music, that this music resonates with me on all these levels. And that only someone who was a thoughtful person could have made this music. This band is definitely not for everybody. I also, while fascinated with the mystery of the band, am not sure I'd want to know everything. Something would be lost in revealing everything I think. And I'm sure the band understand this. It's like not knowing what's happening in deep space, you somehow like not knowing, it makes the whole thing more romantic and it's great food for the imagination. The fact that at least one of the guys is a David Lynch fan would suggest that he understands mystery quite well. And one final thing, in regards to Mikko being the vocalist, he is in fact the vocalist, some two years ago or so I was told that he was in the band by a friend of his from Finland (he has a music reviewing channel called 'Rauta'). but that it isn't his band and that he's just visiting the band. This was confirmed also in that interview they did, so I believe it. I don't believe Mikko is some monster neo nazi either, as far as I've seen he's a big nerdy music fan, who has a wife and lives a normal life really, in fact he owns a music shop in Finland and geeks out of over harsh noise records. I won't get into the politics of it all, because as far as I'm concerned that's his right to believe what he wants.

Surely he said about Mikko Aspa "maybe" being the vocalist is to be respectful. It’s just silly to confirm and reveal everything you know about the band as the anonymous is important for DsO. Its very well known in the BM scene that its M Aspa since "Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice" and 100% he knows as well. I’m also of the opinion that I really dont want to know anything about the band, I cant even picture myself someone sitting on the couch with a Gibson electric guitar writing the FAS riffs. It’s basically on another level and the mystery is perfect for imagination. Btw, has someone else noticed the guitar parts in FAS that could easily been composed by TT of Abigor? Its either a contribution or very inspirational. For reference, listen to Fractal Possession by Abigor.

It's interesting how parts of this interview have dated. One example that comes to mind is the discussion about whether DsO rehearse. I have never doubted that they (they being the so-called 'French core') did get together before going into the studio to record, but now we have video evidence of three members rehearsing 'The Fires of Frustration'.

Always nice to listen to people with passion. Too bad he hasn't found any kind of structures or verses in Fas, as I find it is quite the opposite, a very chaotic album for sure yet with an extremely structured core. Abigor's Time has many more mazes in these terms for example.

Them talking about DSO belief around 1:13:00min mark reminds me of Star Wars KOTOR 2's character Kreia belief.

Great episode, can't wait to hear what you'll do next. I had trouble finding the stuff he mentionned, so here it is for other listeners: Devil Doll (the Italian band), Isten (the finn zine) & Quadrivium (the other zine, their site is accessible through internet archive).

Thanks for watching, and we're glad you enjoyed! Also, thanks for doing everyone a solid with the references. I'll find the band he referred to at the end once again and post it here. The album we spoke about in that section was really a great piece of black metal.

Late to the party: the original vocalist for Deathspell Omega (Shaxul) is in the Tunisian band Ayyur (he plays drums in that project). They are pretty good.

Can I get help finding Roy's FAS review? Also couldn't make out the name of the band he mentioned near the end, sounds like "Schulter" or something

Thanks for listening, we appreciate it! His “review” of Fas is in Imhotep #11, link in the description. As for the band name and the album, I’ll look back through my messages to make sure I get it right. Message us on Instagram @absences.podcast and I’ll get it to you. Either that, or look us up on reddit u/absencespodcast and DM us there.
