Good question. In this case, it would depend on the situation. If you can see the raccoon and pointing it out, you would use THE. If just talking to someone in general (and the raccoon is not around), you would use A. 👍

Question about the last question. Why is it " There IS hardly any difference between the two applicants." I am thinking it should be...." There ARE hardly......can you explain to me why you used IS rather than ARE. Thank you very much!

I was taught not to use "going to go..." Is it better to say "This weekend, we'll go swimming on the lake." We swim on the surface of the lake, don't we? :-) Does "swimming on the lake" sound strange to a native speaker?
When talking about future plans, you can use 'will' or 'going to.' As for swimming, you would not really use 'on.' Perhaps if you're going boating, you may use 'on.' We're going to take a boat out on the lake. 👍
