I run backyard movie nights from May - October and use these old vintage intermission videos in between movies. They are a huge hit and bring back many memories of growing up at the drive-ins with family and friends. Good stuff!!!
+Selene Marie I do the very same thing. I use a projector that I hook up to my laptop or I use a flash drive plus my trusty old dell speakers with a subwoofer. It makes a nice summer evening enjoyable.
Wow. This takes me back to 1972 or so, when I was maybe 10 years old. I actually don't remember what the movies was, but this 10-minute cartoon was so exciting. I just remember being at the concession window constantly looking over my shoulder to check the time. The images of people sprinting in a circle from snack window back to their cars was the real entertainment. But then, I was only 10 years old so at this time!!
I was just thinking about the old intermission cartoons the other day and wondered if RU-vid would actually have the one I remember from my old Drive-In...yep, of course they do. Good ol' RU-vid.
I miss drive in movies. I used to go every weekend when I lived in Kansas when I was younger. then we moved and now there's like none around us. they played this every time and I loved it.
I own a 35mm print of this, and right now it's the absolute jewel of my 35mm collection. This might be THE greatest long form intermission clock ever produced. Thanks for posting it!
"Our drive in plays this. They recently switched to digital projection, but promise to keep showing this video." They'll definitely have to get a digital copy of it somehow, unless they'll keep using an optical projector for that.
Awesome memories of childhood .. going to the drive-in we would always play on the swingset at the front of the parking lot. I met a lot of kids there. It was great.
I couldn't help but laugh at the motionless response of the 'cup o butter', next to the popcorn bag, after he's poured. He was never quite the same after that. lol But seriously, this was before my time, but I have extreme appreciate for the great animation, and whimsical view of people going to happily purchase their snacks. It makes me want popcorn right now-badly!
They did the music in the McHenry Outdoor Theater in McHenry, IL (McHenry County) but they showed these cool adds near the theater like an Ace Hardware Co. there which is awesome!
Was this made in the 50's or 60's. The music type sounds more 50's. Never the less, this was in a time of simpler happier life. Oh how I wish I could go back to those days.
I truly & dearly miss all this stuff. I was born in '71 & kinda witnessed the decline of the drive-in. The younger generation doesn't understand how drive-ins weren't just a movie, but an experience & a family event. What I ask, could be better than being out under the stars, laying in the back of a pick-up truck, with your siblings, snuggled up in blankets, munching pop corn, waiting for it to get dark/show to star? Some drive-ins even had swing-sets & such for kids, so we'd arrive early.
Cast: Refreshent Captain as Ringmaster Popcorn as Juggler Chocolate and Candy as Tightrope Walkers/Holders Bun and Hot Dog as Dog Trick Master Sodas as Vaudeville Straw Dancers Popsicle and Ice Cream Cups as Ice Cream Marching Band; Follow the Leader I love this drive thru theater intermission. I saw this all the time at my drive in theater.
My mom remembers these from when she was a kid. Last time I went to a drive-in was in 2007, basically the only one left that's an hour away from me and I was 18. And yes I watch Grease, I love how they play this in the background when Danny is singing. XD. I would go to a drive-in again if they play good movies. Last time were movies I had zero interest in.
The local drive-in movie theater we had here in Gratz that we were blessed to have run until 2023 would play this exact animation during their intermission. Fun times those were

I’ve seen Grease seven times and vividly remember these ads! Sadly I wasn’t born until 1993. If movie theaters had intermissions, I wouldn’t mind only when necessary like a suitable pause in the movie so the audience can process what they’ve seen so far.
Mark Cooper I have a HO train layout myself and I have been wanting to put a drive inn theater on it too. Send me a picture of it, I would love to see what you have.
I was trying to find this at LEAST 5 years ago, maybe more, to show my kids! The best I found was a couple of lame animated .GIF's, one of the hot dot doing flips and the other of the juggling popcorn. THANK YOU for making this available! And thanks to Audiobuff2 for posting the link for the full-sized 51MB download!
Fabulous. This was usually better than the movies themselves! I especially like the guy in the blue suit who pushes past the women and children on his way to the theater!
"I remembered from the early '70s a few cartoons-perhaps from DFE Films ...I don't recall the names of those cartoons which preceeded the fireworks, snack bar bumpers and the feature film." Aside from The Pink Panther perhaps being one of DFE's well-known characters, other cartoons produced by them that were released theatrically by United Artists in the 60's and 70's include The Inspector, Roland & Ratfink, The Ant and the Aardvark, The Blue Racer, Hoot Kloot and The Dogfather.
Our drive in plays these adds from the "Grease drive in". I bent the ear of the owner enough that he finally had a car show at the drive in. The movie for the first show... Grease. It was awesome seeing a bunch of old classic cars at the drive in. I only wish I could have done more to keep the shows going
Becky's Drive-In in Berlinsville, Pennsylvania used to play this between features. They recently replaced it, though, mostly with advertisements for local businesses.
This is always so nostalgic for me. I remember being little and my Dad telling me about these and him seeing them when he was little and I was so amused by it all and to this day it holds a special place in my heart. ❤ My favorite was always the hotdog one. 😊
they showed this at every intermission at the drive-in in westville, nova scotia up until a few years ago. they replaced it with one featuring puppies and babies.
