Also with that Marineland Magnum Filter you can use for a Diatom filter. This can come in handy for spot water polishing or disease treatment. Diatom filters can catch things like Ich that is free swimming.

Had one and had to return it. The Diatom filter would never seal properly. There is no flat surface on top cover pushing down adequately to seal to cartridge. It sat in a 5 gallon bucket to charge for 48 hours and just never did. I had lots of the old versions Magnum 350 and 250 and never had that issue. The need to bring back the hang on back version. The micron cartridge when in works like it used to on the old versions kept the water crystal clear.

That is the one I am considering getting. I am setting up a 29g dirted tank and instead of buying an HOB and then adding a wavemaker for flow. I figure one of these would be cheaper since it pretty much has flow built right into it. Plus I hate the fact that my AQ isn’t self priming.

I have the old external style of this filter and have used it for years. Love it! I use it as a polishing filter not a main filter in a tank. Easy to move from tank to tank for water polishing. Also nice that it can be used as a backup filter if a filter goes down by being able to transfer media into it from the main filter. I might check out this new internal version. Thank you for the review. As to YetiRC's comment, I have heard it can be loud, which is why I hesitate to try one.

I’m in an upstairs condo and this was my choice. Cant take a chance on leaks or back flow. I don’t mind these structures inside my tank. I just put some faux plants to camouflage. Cant do too much inside the canister as far as media. I was hoping for some videos on how to optimize, hack this filter. I snagged an sicce s filter as well & again I camouflage it with a plant. I use them both in my tank although the Marineland internal is good on its own. The videos you have done about internal filters have very helpful! Thank you!

'been running this canister filter in my 55gal and I'm very pleased with how quickly it cleans up the water column. One HUGE downside though is that there's no way to dial-down the water flow. If you have a tank less than 40gal and you plan on keeping docile fish, this is probably NOT for you. It would've been nice if Marineland included some type of rudimentary dial to control water flow so the livestock + plants didn't get too overwhelmed.

I've used this specific filter on my 55, it has intake slots on the back for water to move into it, one major issue I had with it is it only gets mechanically filtered from that side, it never gets filtered through the rest on the canister. I think I'll have to DIY it so water comes through the bottom and the other sides of the canister. :) just gets clogged up easily.

My Marineland Magnum Filter sits at one side of my 75 and my Tidal 110 sits in back at the opposite end. Both restart perfect if and when the power goes off. Plants hide the Magnum and Tidal nicely and no cichlid is bothered by too much water flow. Thanks for the video.

6 of my 5 nano tanks use this type of filter - only my smallest uses a HOB. My *fish room* is also my office/server room... and with so many electronics here there and everywhere on the floor, it would be VERY BAD to have a filter overflow... even if I do have everything up off the floor a few inches at least, it's still a real concern. I use the Penn Plax internal filters - they work great and are easy to *hot rod*. One feature I like (at least with the Cascade 300), which might not be appealing to others, is the media holder on them is clear blue plastic... and since I use filter floss which is white, I can easily tell when it's time to clean the floss...!!! :)

As a swimming pool owner with a diatomaceous earth based filter I was intrigued enough to pick one of these up a couple years ago. Anyone who filters their pool water with DE knows you can't get water much clearer. It's stunning. I have a 65 gallon community tank that gets loads of sunlight so I'm constantly dealing with greenish water. It's pretty clear but still has a green tint, so I use it occasionally and it'll completely clear the water in an hour or so.. "Occasionally" though because the flow can be overwhelming in a 65, and that's really my only criticism. I wish you could just tone the thing down a bit, although I have found that if you let it run a couple days it'll load up and the flow will slow down somewhat. Maybe that's what they intended? But still, in a 65 it's a big thing! But very well-built. A couple points I've found about it's use: As many others have found, when you've first charged it with DE (a very cheap powder found at just about any pool store) and put it in the tank, it'll puff out a cloud of DE which is a bit disconcerting. There doesn't seem to be any way around it. I've got two and they both do the same thing. DE is a natural substance and non-toxic though, and fish are equipped to handle worse sediment conditions so I don't think it affects them. It clears up in a couple minutes anyway. If you plan to leave it in the tank long-term (something I'd only do in a much larger tank than my 65 gallon), DE filters can be temporarily recharged without replacing the powder by unplugging the filter and agitating it to loosen up the DE from the filter element. My pool filter has a handle that does just this too. I just give it a couple twists. When you restart it ,the DE will recoat the element but with a fresh outer surface, which is really what needs disturbing. This stops working after a couple times and the flow doesn't return to normal when you then need to replace the powder. Side note wrt my greenish water: I've had a lot of success also with API Bio-chem Zorb in clearing the water, but I now have a strong suspicion it's robbing something from the water the plants need. I'd be interested in hearing from others, or if this channel could delve into that a bit. Ok, Jason, sorry to hijack your great channel. Well done and rock on.

Great video, I bought this filter a few months ago because one of the canister filters on my 75 gallon tank broke. I was tired of the hassle cleaning bug canisters so I tried this. It is definitely a great filter , the only problem I have is that the flow is so strong that it creates ton of bubbles in my tank, I wish there was a way to decrease the output flow, then this would be a great filter. I like this filter but I have bala sharks, tetras, corys, a pleco and gold algae eater so they are ok with the flow, they stay on the other side mostly.
@PrimeTimeAquatics

I have found the same - I wish there was an adjustable flow.

You can buffer the output flow by sliding a pre-filter sponge onto the output extension tube. Before attempting to attach the sponge, leave off or detach the flow diverter/diffuser. This method very much buffers the flow to where it can be safe to use with betta fish. I keep oranda goldfish. This canister filter with a pre-filter sponge attached, along with a large sponge filter keep my tank really clean and my goldfish happily swimming. PRIME TIME AQUATICS, I just subscribed and am binge watching your videos. Great information. Thanks for sharing.

I have this filter in my 120 Discus tank along with an Eheim Professional 3 canister. I have the polishing cartridge in it and it has really cut down on the fine particulates in the water. This tank is built into the wall and is viewed from two sides so my options were limited as far as adding more filtration. This filter also did solo duty for about a week when the impeller on my Eheim broke and waited for delivery of a replacement(2) and it kept the tank clean.

I had 2 of those Marineland internal canister filters. One we put in a well stocked 55 gallon community tank (small schoolers, catfish, loaches, etc.) in lieu of a power head and the other we put in a 100 gallon goldfish tank (7 juveniles, outlet pointed upward), in addition to my HOB filters already on the tank. Works great in the 55 gallon tank, but the goldfish fouled this filter up very quickly. At one point, I was taking it apart and cleaning it down to the impeller every couple of days as it would become clogged, make the most horrible noise, and lose power. I switched it out with the one in the 55 gallon to see if it was a faulty but it ran great. It seems to dominate plant detritus, food, and floating sand particles, but it is not a fan of the monster poops goldfish produce. LOL! I hope you guys have success with it in your big tank. I would be curious to know how it holds up for you over time. Thanks again for another great video!

I don't like the suction cups, but they do a good job helping with circulation and polishing the water. The one I have in with my angels only does 500 Litres per hour. The plants are swaying gently and it does not blow the fish around. Tank has two sponge filters and the internal does a great job filtering out particles from water column.

Love it. Small stickler points. Your first point is we don't hear it. But we swap us hearing it to the sound being in the tank. How much that matters isn't well looked into. But it's definitely something to think about for some. I hope to see future studies on this. Even using a semi waterproof phone recording underwater in differently filtered tanks. Listening to the result flows between calm to intense. Perhaps we should think more about what type of fish and what amount of water sound level they're naturally used to (like Hillstream Loaches vs medeka perhaps). Just typing out loud. Also. It's great to not get a leak. But an internal can still 'leak'. But since it's internal it simply means flow and therefore the whole filter is less efficient. Obvious when that happens outside of the tank. But if it happens with an internal tank. Some people might not realise their filter is loosing appropriate flow and dramatically diminishing its effectiveness. Love the video. Just putting additional thoughts out there with love

@evowire

I was thinking of trying this in mine. Are you using a mesh bag for the DE, or just adding it in the middle of the Micron Filter?
@Frank_and_his_Tanks
@Frank_and_his_Tanks 2 года назад
@@evowire The DE powder actually coates the outside of the micron cartridge. I think marineland has a video about how to do it. You set it up running in a bucket, then add the powder to the water. It gets taken in by the filter and coates the cartridge. Then transfer the filter to the tank. Back in the old days with the old vortex diatom filter you could also add powered activated carbon. That was a superpower of a filter!

I like internal filters compared to hang on back. Picked up a top fin mf40 and use it in my 55 gallon with a penguin 200. Thinking of getting rid of the penguin and adding a sicc shark 800. The reason I got the mf40 was because of the canister and options it gives you in adding filter or bio media to the canister, it does create a strong flow, but that can be overcome with some creative aqua scaping and using decorations as current breaks for fish to rest in. While the internal filters do take up space, you don't have to worry about leaks and they run relatively silent while giving you in my opinion better performance than a hang on back filter would.. but definitely not as effective as a canister filter can be.

I had outside floor canister filters on both sides of my tank and they began to leak (!!!) Found one after it leaked substantially all over my floor, the other one I caught relatively quickly. Since I am in an apartment, not a good thing. Bought one of these, thank God, no more outside of the tank filters for me. I cannot afford the potential damage. One that hung on the back of the tank, caused a wall to become wet and blossomed. Removed that one and, thankfully, the wall dried. I cannot take the chance on any "outside of the tank" filters anymore, so this one is it. I have two very big Parrot Cichlids, and they leave it alone and like the water circulation action. I am going to get a second one for the other side of the tank for polishing the water only. They may not look as "pretty" but I have rolled the dice enough and want the water inside of the tank and not on the outside.

I wish you could see my no longer made for the USA Eheim Pickup internal filter. Motor stays attached to tank via suction cups and you only pull out the part that houses the sponge. Best mechanical filter I’ve ever used. Some European youtubers have made videos of them-search for them. Mine has been in continual use since 1997 in my 60g paired with a canister filled with bioballs. I actually thought of getting a transformer to change my current to Euro specs so I could buy them on Amazon Germany and put one in every tank. Yes, that good. I tried to make my own but the plumbing parts are too expensive for the size I wanted. I’ll have to settle for a power head on an upside-down fine sponge filter I guess. 🤔 I couldn’t stand the red line on the body of the filter so I painted it matte black with some krylon fusion spray paint. I used the same paint on my Seachem 110 filters with their blue knobs and dials. These filters are a bother to clean. It’s not so much the actual cleaning of the filters that’s very easy. It’s the taking them in and out of the aquarium once a week ( they clog up very quickly ) and disturbing my fish. The pleated cartridge filter accessory that comes with this filter isn’t long enough to reach the bottom of the canister if you snug the cartridge to the intake of the filters powerhead. I had to remedy this by cutting to size and inserting some filtration foam I had left over from use on a different filter. These are very powerful and they do work very well but I don’t see myself buying anymore of these. I’m currently running two of these on two different 75 gallon tanks with sand substrate to help with capturing fine particulates. These are very good but the pleated cartridge isn’t long enough, the gasket for the media cartridge is flimsy and I hate the annoying right red line on them. It draws your eyes to it and away from the fish.

I don't find the space a big deal...not for a big tank anyway. I might swtich from the giant sponges which take up more space than the canistters, plus the fish never use the back corners anyway unless they use the filter as a 'house'. It's hard finding the gallon rating on those things though.

Great video sir I'm thinking to set up a 75-90 galon Mbuna tank. I really don't want any noise from my filters though. I have a choice between an internal JUWEL eccoflow 1000 or an external Eheim experience 350, or a combination of both. What would you recommend? I also despise too much maintenance and would like to have least frequency of water changes possible. Thanks a lot sir!
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 года назад
I don't have external canister filters running because of the maintenance. For easy of maintenance I like the Marineland PRO series and Seachem Tidal HOB filters - internal motors that are quiet and as long as you keep the water level high they are usually silent.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks a lot. I am now thinking whats best between a Juwel 66 Galons or a Juwel 90 for my future Mbuna setup. Would you reckon both would work just fine? Filtration wise, Juwel come with internal filtration systems (600litters/h for the 66galon (240l aquarium) and 1000l/h for the 90 galons (350 litters aquarium)). Seems to not make the 4 times per hour rule. Is it fine that i just add another internal filter in this case? I have a Ziss filter. I do not like suction cups. Took a 100 gallon sponge filter base. Took off the Ziss bottom cage. Removed the sponge. Super glued the cage to the sponge filter base. Waited 10 minutes. Put the sponge back into the cage. Put the cage with the base attached back on the filter. 2 weeks now and the Ziss is in place at the bottom of the tank. Cage has full filtration. Easy clean. Pull out. With base, easy take off. Back in the tank. Hope this helps those who do not like suction cups.

Don't use these for axolotl's unless you have a way to bring the flow it spits out down to almost zero! Axolotl's like still water. Any kind of flow or current will lead to them being stressed out and unhappy. Get a HOB or sponge filter instead
