Well, I had a single speed cyclocross bike. I love this bike. I wanted to ride the bike all year round, and riding in the snow with a single speed is kind of difficult. After a lot of shop visits, I finally found a shop that was both willing to do this build, and had the parts in stock.
The hardest parts for this build: getting a shifter that would work with my drop bars and an in-line cable adjuster. Flat bars or alt bars seem much easier....

5th gear has a 0.85 gear ratio, so I went with a 20 tooth rear cog so that 5th gear was similar to the 17 tooth cog I had in a single speed "mode"
