Since so many viewers have requested us to try drill bits, we have finally gotten a submission that has a chance of actually working without destroying a barrel. Saar was kind enough to send us this design to demonstrate.

I’m impressed with how accurate they are. Try hunting with punkin balls (Pumpkin balls) just a round ball shotgun round. It was like hunting with a Brown Bess muzzle loader they flew everywhere and anywhere. Also some of the ones they showed I thought no way but were very accurate. And vis a vis.

I believe Jeff hoped by loading them just a tiny bit faster than the speed of sound, they would go subsonic after a few yards and then air might be able to flow through after transonic phase of flight. That's what the oil was for, to attempt to see if that happened. It appears it did not and the flow still went around the projectile but it's quite hard to tell ultimately.

I'd like to see more testing with these. A lower velocity or, perhaps better, a longer distance to the target. It would be fascinating, although I reckon unlikely, to see if the internal fluting changed the rotational speed over time, after going subsonic. A better way, interestingly enough, to induce this change might be to fire them backwards (though it might not).

Yes, it would create a separated shock bow in front of the projectile, making it behave like it was completely solid. As soon as it drops to transsonic speeds the shockbow dissipates and the air can enter the channels, but then rheology gets REEEAAALLY ugly.

On subsonic aircraft, when I need air to flow through for cooling, I follow a two thirds rule. The INLET must be no larger than 2/3rds the size of the outlet. If the intake is too large, the air just stalls in-front of it. Sounds crazy but It works. On some of your air through projectile projects, this may be happening.

Ammo manufacturers really should watch this channel, see what crazy slug designs work, then contact their creators and either hire them to design slugs for them or but/license their designs. I bet if some of these designs were commercially available they'd probably be a huge hit. Better yet, it's time to start a Taofledermaus shotgun slug company that sells nothing but the best slugs seen on this channel.

You’re getting a ram-air issue. The same thing happens on the pitot tubes of jet aircraft. Basically, at those speeds the air will stack up in front of a small inlet. To achieve airflow, you may have more luck if you start with a hollow cylinder and then add a slightly twisted (per the math based on exit rotation and muzzle velocity) and very thin sheet of metal inside.

It’s clear to everyone that this channel is just interesting and “scientific” testing but that’s what makes it entertaining, I don’t see how these videos have any negative impact or poor intentions. RE: MINERAL OIL I think that the gunpowder in the 22 Magnum burns the mineral oil. My guess is that the wadding of the shotgun shell is insulating the mineral oil from the muzzle flash.

When I’ve shot full drill bits from my crossbow (80 pounds self cocking cobra crossbow, recommend if you want a cheap crossbow that could be used for small game/mild self defense (if shot at head it might kill) the drill bit had turned when o shot it at the wood block, so as long as it goes in deep enough it should spin on impact

_There's a chance the helix on the rifled barrel is counter spin direction to the helix on the drill. The opposing forces could explain the lack of rotation._

I think the reason for the low spin rate is the relatively higher amount of rotational inertia because of the brass sleeve. Then it doesn't need to rotate as quickly to achieve in-flight stability.

It would be kickass to see these rounds in a clear ballistics jell test... even if the spin rate was too high and pushed air off the tip of the drill, I'd imagine with the lower spin rate, in jelly it may find itself digging into the jell and "jamming" itself up, love the videos

Just stumbled on this. 1.) You won’t see mineral oil vapor from the inside fluting until subsonic. 2.) You’re actually firing in the trans-sonic range. Either dial the speed up so it exits well above transonic or slow it down so it exits high subsonic. The transonic buffeting is likely the root of the instability. 3.) The high twist rate of the drill bit will only cause more instability. Try lowering it to 16-20:1 4.) Extend the drill tip leading edge 2-3mm and 3-4mm past the bottom. This will help "push-pull" the air thu. Really, really cool tho. 👍

The tips of the drill bit might be causing air to move laterally over the holes, countersink the bit below the top of the brass collar(think jet turbines) or maybe file the tips of the drill bit so they come to sharp edges. It just seems 1/16” of tool steel would displace enough air that the air vanes would essentially have a lid of air rushing over the top and not through them.

I watch a few different gun channels and even gun channels that that do not actually even shoot the guns for the most part like forgotten weapons have been demonetized.
