I’m a sailor as well as an artist and I thought you handled your clients off hand comment, ‘that it was a boat and not a piece of furniture’, very well (regarding your query about varnish coatings). I have followed the creation of this yacht from start to finish and think that it is THE most amazing piece of wood sculpture/furniture/yacht/artwork that I have seen for a very long time. The woodcraft expertise you have demonstrated throughout this project has been a joy to watch. I do hope your client recognises this thing of beauty you have created for him and puts up some videos of her when she is on the water. Well done sir!

Thanks Mike. My customer and I are very much on the same page. Despite all the jazzy results, all the choices made that resulted in that were practical in nature. I'm sure my client will do plenty of boasting down at the yacht club.

Mark, an absolute beauty of a boat. Its been a great pleasure watching the build. Especially for my love of timber and boats, but also I enjoyed watching a true craftsman at work. Your " Second Best is not an option" approach to quality is to be applauded, its a rare commodity these days. I have a mechanical training, but timber seems to be in my blood . My late uncle who emigrated to Australia in the 1950's was a mechanic who turned to carpentry. He worked on the Kariba dam project in Rhodesia and the Snowy Mountain Dam in Australia. Became a saw doctor and had his own business. In retirement, he decided to make a guitar as he was an avid country music fan. As good timber is very expensive down under, he was advised to try something less timber expensive such as a violin. He did and made his own micro planes and chisels. His violins became well known for their quality and tone, one he sold for $10,000 Australian. He was an inspiration to me in many ways, especially he thought me more than I had learned in basic carpentry courses. I know I'll never match his skill. After a period of poor health, I'm retired now. Through your videos you have inspired me to get off my ass and build some wardrobes and the book cases we need rather than buying them. I've learnt a bit and been reminded of things I'd forgotten in the videos. I love the Planed down pencil for getting the marking right in close, stop's them being "borrowed" too. Keep up the good work and roll on the next project.
@Nomadboatbuilding
@Nomadboatbuilding 2 года назад
That’s great little family history story. I have an unfinished fiddle kicking around in the pile somewhere. I should take inspiration from you and resurrect the project. I’m so happy I have encouraged you to get your hands dirty. It’s a wonderful way to spend a retirement rather than just staring at someone building boats on RU-vid. All the best.
@loki7441
@loki7441 2 года назад
If your going at that fiddle, whenever you get a moment. My uncle told me he used "Horse Glue" as he called it, to assemble or repair them. You might already know this. An old style glue used back in the 30's from rendered horses, grim as it sounds. It was the same glue made he used on his Cello he made. The reason he and other makers used it was if he needed to repair an instrument he could prise it apart with little effort and no damage to the timber. It was almost like shellac bonding it together. Apparently it didn't affect the tone, allowing the timber to be as if all one piece. He sent me home with a 3/4 sized one for my Nephew as he was trying to learn. I got it re tuned after reacclimatising by a neighbour who is big in the traditional music scene here in Ireland. He said it was one of the sweetest sounding violins he had heard. He asked if it was for sale, NO GO. He had about twenty hanging up on the shelf. My nephew couldn't get the hang of it and gave up; but he wont let that violin go. Good to see in a young un. Stay Safe.

While the rule may not permit bulbed keels or reverse taper keels with wings, and the ballast must be removable, anything else is permitted. The aspect ratio, taper ratio, foil section, chord, tip configuration, etc are all up to the designer. Doesn't have to be a constant chord foil with a sharp edged tip as shown here.

@Nomadboatbuilding

The final weight was 65 KG. There was only a minimum spec for the hull and deck materials, not the whole assembly. The rest is made up with ballast and there are rules that govern weight vs sail area too. Not my area to worry about.

@@welshtexas1 yeah, right? why watch it if you don't love it? look up some good music if you're not into boatbuilding. there's plenty out there, mostly from the 60s and 70s. no offense but that was an era. I wasn't even a blink in the eye then but there's nothing better to hear and try to learn unless you go back to classical. my not so humble opinion.

I don't know if you disclosed this or not, but, what was the cost to have you build this (materials/labor/etc)? Amazing work!

The materials for the hull was actually on low side. I don’t remember the exact amount but something between $3000 and $4000. The labour however was not low. In total I put in 800 hours.

Now if you could make the same boat, but like 4 times larger. Like around 32 ft long.
