The West might have an established trade relationship with South Africa but the truth of the matter is that..that relationship hasn't benefitted South Africa and its economy. This is called diplomacy, plain and simple. To characterize this as SA standing up to anyone is foolish. Countries have allies who have similar views and policies. When your ally says, "I know you don't like X country because of X situation, but we don't care because we have our own agenda" that's not "standing up" or being brave, it's making a choice. The US is with the EU and Ukraine, and Russia invaded a sovereign country (for its own reasons and that's a different conversation), so it stands to reason we would side with our allies. If SA values cheap oil more than its relationship with the West, so be it. SA needs to make decisions based on its needs. However, it's at the risk of tarnishing that relationship. The US stating this is not bullying, it's "diplomacy."
