International Whiskies - Lark, Gärtner Hopfen & High Coast
Today we have three very different whiskies from three different countries around the world - we have the Lark from Tasmania, Australia, the Gärtner Spirits Hopfen Whisky from Germany and an Adelphi bottling of High Coast from Sweden.
We love trying world whiskies as it is always so interesting to taste different flavours we might not find in whiskies made closer to home, whether that is due to different ingredients used, different rules and regulations or simply a different climate!
Have you tried any of these drams? What did you think of them? Let us know in the comments!
We do in person and virtual tastings. Follow the link to book on! We'd Love to see you there! callander-drinks-co.myshopify...

As a German I recommend 'ElsBurn' (they do a lot with Sherry casks). The maybe biggest destillery is 'St. Kilian', they have real pot stills from Scotland, the peated barley is from Scotland - so they are the "scottished" Destillery in Germany. *But* (imho) the malt right now is a bit too young (for me), maybe waiting for 5 additional years. They are on a good way. They also have the ambition to go internationally.

Hey Girls ✌🏻 You are so funny and cool. I like see your Videos. And Jen … 🥰 I'm from Germany. there are now as many distilleries here as in Scotland. But they all taste different than Scottish whisky. I like the taste of “ElsBurn” and “St. Kilian" the most. "ElsBurn" mostly has very strong notes. often sherry cask maturation. "St.Killian" tastes better with light fruits such as pears and apples. try whisky from both distilleries. keep it up. greetings Erik ✌🏻

Glad you liked the Lark Blend guys - from Lark + Overeem & Nant - two distilleries that Lark bought with 'old' stocks, before selling Overeem back to the family - it was a bottle gifted to me from a Tasmanian friend Glenn Duncan when he was visiting Scotland

I'm a proud Aussie but sadly must admit I've not had MUCH Australian Whisky simply because even here it's just too expensive in comparison to high quality Scottish Whisky. But I have visited the Lark Distillery in Hobart and tried a tasting flight - well worth a visit, very nice way to try a few. And in South Australia where I'm from (where we're more famous for our wines, making over half of all the wine from Australia), I was gifted a bottle of McLaren Vale Distillers Single Malt aged in Shiraz and Muscat Casks and 55% ABV. It's amazing stuff - highly recommended!
@TheGrailTastings
@TheGrailTastings Год назад
Yeah sadly we don't get much of it here either! We love the concept of maturing in local wine casks! That's not something we can do in Scotland! That McLaren sounds fantastic!!!😋

Thinking of German whiskies, you might like to consider a St Kilian (from the north of Bavaria), an Elsburn (from the Hammerschmiede distillery in Thuringen) or a rye whiskey from the Spreewald distillery (near Berlin). They’re all quite different, but they won’t make you turn up your nose like the “Hopfen” dram did - great face made by Rachel at that moment. As for the Aussie whiskies, keep a lookout for Limeburners (south of Perth, W.A.), Hellyers Road (Tasmania), Starward (Melbourne, Victoria) and the tiny Fleurieu distillery (near Goolwa in South Australia). That’s a microscopic share of the almost 350 distilleries that can now be found across the length and breadth of Oz. Cheers.

There are a few german whiskys to recommend. A lot of german whiskys taste like Obstler since many distillers are producing fruit schnaps as well. I you the the chance to grad a Elsburn Alrik it is worth trying. Also Wild Whisky is very nice. Something special would be the Preussischer Whisky with tastest like grassy meadows. Slyrs has also some decent whisky as well as the Blaue Maus. Sild Crannog is also some very unique ... a lightly peated whisky matured in a old fishing boot in the northern sea in Sylt. So there are few quite interesting german bottelings out there. Cheers from germany

You know Hessen? Cool, I'm from that area in germany! There are more whisky producing distillerys here in germany as in scotland, but the whiskymaking-culture is very young and wild so they produce a lot of weired stuff. Most of them in the maintime produce spirits from different fruits and then produce "a whisky too" of cause there is a lot of demand. But lately there are more and more distillerys with realy good whisky there, partialy very cask driven (not only Elsburn and St. Kilian but that are very good examples for Malt Whiskys, there are very tasty Rye Whiskys in germany too). It's a young culture with a fast and creative development I think. Personally I like to try out and so I love the weired stuff too. 😁🥃🥃

I've tried a couple of German whiskies when I lived there. Mostly Slyrs as they were one of the widely available options. I thought it was okay but pretty expensive for what it is. I've actually been to their distillery as I was down in Bavaria for work. Lovely location but didn't buy any bottles when visiting due to the price. I've tried a few from around the world. I think you've had some of the Dutch Zuidam whisky which I thought was good. Didn't really rate the other Dutch whisky I have tried. Recently had a peated Brazilian whisky from Union Distillery that Cadenhead bottled that was actually pretty good for a 5 year old costing £40. Used to live in the US so I've tried a heap from there of varying quality from the excellent down to nail varnish remover.
@TheGrailTastings
@TheGrailTastings Год назад
Haha, agreed, the quality varies everywhere I guess! We've had a few recommendations for Slyrs so we might have to seek some of that out. The Adelpi bottling of Zuidam was magic!

I heard that High Coast obtain Islay peat for peating the barley. Most of their range are great. I tried Timmer, Hav, Dalvve, and Berg but found the Berg was overcooked by the wood. Their newer range was bottled at 50 cL, and this put me off from the distillery bottling. Maybe independent bottling if there is chance.
@TheGrailTastings
@TheGrailTastings Год назад
Oh cool, we didn't know that! We'd love to try more from them, they seem very interesting!
@martywong822
@martywong822 Год назад
@@TheGrailTastings For me, Timmer is the Swedish version of Islay (most close to Ardbeg in my opinion). Hav is a smoky Higlander and Dalvve is a smoky Speysider. Berg is a sherry influenced whisky, but the wood is too much and it tastes more like a bourbon.

Going from Tasmania to Germany is a hard sell. We have a sh**load of distilleries in Germany and the range goes from absolutely horrendous to very good. In fact there are more then in Scotland but not many quality as a whisky distillery to me. We have plenty of distilleries that distill other spirits and thought they just do a whisky as well. Therefore there is a lot of not that good products. But you can also find some hidden local gems that are not widely available not even in Germany. The ones that are most interesting to try imo are St. Kilian (scotch style), Elsburn (scotch style but some with woodsmoke instead of peat), Stork Club Full Proof Rye (American style Rye) a sweet and intense rye matured in Sherry casks.

We have a few to add to the list. Unfortunately they are not as easy for us to get or even hear about here!

Ok this I believe is another of those whisky myths, Compass Box was part owned by Dewars who may have contacted Box, but I doubt it got to lawyers, maybe Box just wanted to change the name anyway to avoid confusion, or they wanted a different angle on their brand. Tried an Austrian whisky recently (Uuhaouaa) tbh I'd rather have Ralfy's whisky flavour in a pouch with some vodka. So still a ways to go.

Liars! I told you to get a bottle of Overeem Port Matured Cask Strength!! You still should! Lark is very very average. They bought Overeem from Casey Overeem and then sold it back to his daughter many years later. Overeem is far superior to Lark. As for NANT, a very controversial ‘distillery’ that screwed a lot of investors out of their money, and was purchased by Lark. Some interesting stories out of that, like Straight Bat whisky - a boy who went in with legal documentation and claimed his barrel with his dad, then released the single cask bottling (long sold out now)
