The album was perfect 10 years ago. Because the band and stage were perfect. It's been copied in the meantime by idiots who will never achieve the same level because they don't understand the lyrics and don't have a sense for the vibe of the melody.
I heard it live a couple of days ago, and it's still as effective as the last time I heard it few years back, I got chills listening to how the sound of the guitars gradually grows, and Sam Fogarino's drum work on this song is epic!
My favorite song from my favorite Interpol album. The Interpol album skillfully tells a story of the phases of destruction of a relationship and what the effect is on the male during the breakup. I was going through my divorce at the time the album dropped and it encapsulated so brilliantly and painfully the experience I went through. I will forever be grateful to Interpol for having the courage to make this album.

I remember being 19 with a health diagnosis so imaginable painful that I chose the bottle. Listening to Interpol saved me in many ways than one. I love this music.

my experience was sort of a rough day....my colleagues brought me to a windowless room and sort of shaved and scrubbed my body while playing Interpol. really loudly...now i understand what it was happened....they could have just told me, the bastards....
What I love about this video is that there is SO much implied threat and danger through the whole thing. The first time I watched it, I was constantly wondering just wtf was about to happen. The sharp talon pinkies, the tools, the altar... It has a very... Lovecraftian, insane gloss to it, where people are harvested, all bundled with impressions of sex without being actually sexual. Love it.
Interpol just has that eery, makes you think effect. Not quite makes you depressed, but supposed to keep you grounded. Interpol, your artists, in every aspect. Thank you.

I'm not up on the chemistry but I've worked over a decade as an exterminator. Love this song and video. I always thought of the women as biological process happening within the beetle and the milk is the actual pheromone. As it goes down the drain it is either being stored for use at another time or was being excreted to serve it's purpose. I found out about Interpol in a somewhat random way. I fell in love with a coworker, he never had feelings for me, but I insisted (I feel an inexplicable connection with him) and the few times we spoke he recommended that Pace is the trick, I immediately became obsessed with Paul's heartbreaking voice, the story of the band and its profound lyrics. I feel so sad for not having met it before. It's just wonderful, the melancholy and the dark side that they have makes me feel totally understood. Thanks Interpol, you make my miserable life a little better. This year has been horrible but the only thing that makes up for me is that I will see you this August 25th. They are the best, grateful for their existence.
I would oftem drive around, and see interpol stickers on cars , and I was like WTF is that, another EmO band. I am now 55 years old and have stretched my imagination to to see what the sound was all about. I am now educated and feel a kindred spirit to this musical experience. I grew up in the era of Bauhaus, Siosie and the Banchees and the Sisters of Mercy...this is a continuation of that musical experience. Time to get some vinyl.
This is one fascinating, dark and visually stunning video. Taking the the ritual of the beetle and interpreting it from a futuristic human perspective is just artistic genius. And Interpol, they never disappoint.

This song and video are so amazing! Honestly this is my go to ANYtime I need to just - conspire lol. I want try to share with friends, etc. but when I do the feeling is not there. This song reaches my soul and I guess you just can’t truly share that feeling.
The guitar reminds me of Joy Division "Insight" at the beginning. I know people say the beginning guitar riff is a rip off of The Chameleons "Don't Fall" but it is only 2 or 3 chords. One can't deny that The Chameleons & Joy Division are a big influence on Interpol.
I just really hate how this song and 'Barricade' are singled out and the album is seen as the worst. The self-titled album is a masterpiece, all one has to do is listen and *feel* the music.
The Self Titled is so powerful. I have the 12" of it and I often start with the second half....The Man I Am. The feel like Paul writes true to male emotions, with a sense of honesty, humor and longing. Not that women fans won't enjoy it....but there is something special as a guy who is often lonely I feel in his words. But the second half is so dark when you give it a chance. The Undoing is a fucking masterpiece.
+tehrubarb Exactly, I think that's the thing when it comes to this album. A person has to have experienced the darkness that the album portrayed in order to have understood and truly appreciate it. And I agree, once you hit Always Malaise the album becomes dark. And it makes it even greater since the songs afterwards start hitting home. Even if one's never experienced that dark recess, one can simply hear how Paul has done so. It makes the album more of an experience how much emotion Paul puts into his singing.

@nightcrawls It's a reaction within a cell to make the pheromone mentioned at the beginning. The reaction uses an enzyme (a protein that makes reactions happen faster) to transform one molecule into another.
Look up the director, Charlie White (who also directed Interpol's "Evil" video). He's actually an established photography artist who's done some truly bizarre photo exhibitions.
