She said in one of the interviews that she wanted for the deaf community to be able to “see” the beat. Each movement was intentional and created so they could feel the rhythm of the songs. I am just amazed with her beauty and her energy.
As a deaf person I LOVE HOW SHE SIGHED THE AUDIENCE!!! I appreciate how she shows me the beat and just her energy is enough to send me in the Super Bowl ❤️❤️
I know ASL, and I was wondering if you thought some of her signs were a little strange? I’m guessing you also know ASL, so I wanna see what you think. Is it a regional thing? Idk, it threw me off a bit.
@@theonionqueen3519 know asl and as a black person who signs as well as our own coded signs.... If you can't understand the emotions while she's signing then I can't you. The rest of the deaf community that was there had no issue understanding her. As she once said in an interview, I want them to see the beat". Do really know ASL or are you just lying to throw dirt bc you're a miserable person who wants to throw dirt on someone who has achieved more than you? Ps. Her name is Justina Miles... Look her up and learn her story before trying to throw salt. ASL is her first language.
Can't speak for ASL since I'm french, but the majority of LSF speakers lip sync when signing, as do I though I'm not deaf or mute (all my deaf friends do though), we find it easier
Right she did that. Um sure her value went through the roof after this.....gotta turn some down now um sure. Hell um not deaf and enjoying dah hell out of her
Remember God loves you♥️😊! Good news is that Jesus paid the punishment for your sins, He died, and rose from the dead on the 3rd day. you are ONLY forgiven and saved by putting faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. Please repent, change your life around and live for Him🙏. He is coming back soon🥳🎊.....
She maintained a high level of energy till the end! 13 minutes! I would have tired out after 3 minutes. The coordination, timing, expressions, charisma.. This lady is a natural permformer.
Is there a Grammy nomination for this woman? This is an INCREDIBLE performance! I think there should be a category for best musical interpreters. The signer for Chris Stapleton was also AMAZING. I honestly had an emotional boost just watching these ASL performers.
I don't know about the Grammy rules for a television performance, but an Emmy is absolutely a possibility. I hope Justine's people are on it as far as campaigning (you know Rhianna's people are, lol). BTW, the signer for Chris Stapleton was Troy Kotsur, the deaf actor who won an Oscar for his performance in the movie CODA.
Justina Miles was class valedictorian for the high school she attended. She also won the silver medal for the U.S in 2021-2022 deaflympics for track. She's also in school now for nursing. This young woman is definitely going places.
@@_STAN_NEWJEANS_ I'm confused on why you'd think she would of been awarded valedictorian out of pity. You're literally saying she's dumb without coming out and saying it, you're not slick. To become valedictorian, means you received the highest gpa within that graduating class. Also you need to take challenging courses on top of having the highest gpa. She graduated with a 4.0 at the model secondary school for the deaf, but I'm quite sure if she had chosen to attend a regular high school she would of excelled there as well. Also, she's hard of hearing not completely deaf.
I've just started learning sign language and it takes dedication and effort just to get every word right in a song. Like it's fire how she's doing it effortlessly. And yes its an Art like really.. its impressive
As a mildly hearing impaired person I appreciate her keeping with the beat. She is literally physically explaining the notes I don’t hear. I don’t understand sign language for the most part either so she is helping more people than she knows.
im hearing impaired/hearing deteriorated as well and still learning ASL. i felt as though despite i couldnt hear a portion of some of the music, the interpreter made up for that by hitting all the beats in the song through her movement and her emotions :)
It's also her dancing and the motions to the beat to keep the momentum of the song and provide the viewer a chance to see the actual beat. Unbelievable, natural talent.
As a hard of hearing person without access to sign laguage growing up this is so emotional to watch. Once "All the Lights" came on I was crying. Then "Run this Town." That hit me so deep in the feels. I was in middle school when that song came out imagining a world with more expressions like this. Deaf culture is getting recognition. Thank you Justina for breaking bariers! I aspire to work together.
I swear concert interpreters have done more for the deaf community than anything else recently. These people are performers themselves and it keeps getting soo much attention and love 😭❤️ bound to have some amazing impacts!!
@@JillyMae89 just that there’s a difference between hearing concert interpreters and ASL performers. I’m clarifying that Justina is the latter since most people don’t know
@@itsfelicia thank you. These fleahives are so jealous and want everyone Rihanna has done or introduced that their lacking queen hasn't. Sad. You would think Beyonce would have her own deaf interpreter for her shows already.
@@jordi221b I’m just learning about her now! She’s incredible! From what I know of interpreting music, it’s not exactly done on the spot - well, it can be, but is likely to result in the less-entertaining sign language interpreters we’re used to seeing. There’s definitely been an uprising in music interpreters extremely dedicated to convey not just the words, but the VIBES of the music as well. It’s turned sign language interpreting into an art form for sure! Sorry, bit of a ramble, but I as I was saying, from what I heard, this type of interpretation isn’t done on the spot, it’s carefully prepared and practiced, like unique cover songs. That said, she must’ve prepared a ton to create this set, even her dancing between songs seemed so carefully thought out, it perfectly portrayed the beats. I wonder if she had to be near a speaker to feel the vibrations? Otherwise, I don’t know how she would’ve stayed on-beat so perfectly the entire time (assuming she doesn’t have a cochlear or something like that, which I don’t know of course!)
Thats the point of an interpretation from her tho to interpret noise and words so shes not just there for the song its the other important sounds everyone hears also
@@PixelTheExtraTerrestrialmost interpreters don’t do that lmao. So I doubt it was part of her contract. She goes all out for every aspect of this, for things most interpreters don’t do
It’s cause Justina Miles is Deaf herself and a native ASL user! It’s not very common that a hearing interpreter could use ASL to express the meaning, energy, and attitude of songs this well
i completely agree, but there is one ASL interpreter that comes to mind, Amber Galloway. She went viral a few years ago for her ASL interpretation at rap concerts. She’s awesome and her whole mission is to bring music to life through ASL. Look her up, or look up “sign language interpreter goes viral at rap concert” something like that. She’s done a Ted talk that’s really worth the watch, plus VOX did a piece on her.
"Justina Miles has a remarkable ability to communicate and connect with the audience on a level that transcends words. Her interpretation isn't just about sign language; it's about the energy, the dance, the radiant vibrations she brings to each performance. It's as if she speaks to our hearts and souls without uttering a single word. Her presence is a powerful testament to the universal language of love and joy. Thank you, Justina, for sharing your extraordinary talent and for touching us so deeply with your artistry. 🌟🎶"
@@unicornmadness6286 weird take. I’m hard of hearing like Justina, involved w Deaf community, been signing my whole life, fluent in ASL and still couldn’t do this. Yes it’s her native language but this also shows skill not everyone has. This is more than everyday signing, it’s a performance. Therefore…impressive. It’s ok to give credit to performers when it’s due.
My sister-in-law is an ASL interpreter and says some of the hardest stuff to interpret is really energetic and rhythmic music because it's so much more than just signing. She and a friend of hers interpreted for an event we held and her friend was the one who did the hip hop performers and the girl had energy!
Yeah when I was doing stuff in school, obviously just taking a year or two of ASL we're not going to be nearly at a professional interpreters level no matter what but there were definitely songs that we were drawn to because they were easier and they're definitely not like what's in this video!
Can I ask you a question?? I am so intrigued by these amazing performances!! How do they know the beat and stay on beat so well?? And then when the song changes, they know exactly when. And they know to change the beat. How do they do that?!?! I am dying to know! It's so impressive!!!
@@kassygendron3022 Well most ASL interpreters are hearing and this one isn't 100% deaf. She is legally deaf because she is significantly hard of hearing so I'm guessing this interpreter has some kind of hearing aids. She did an interview on "CBS Morning" or whatever it's called and she said she was very familiar with all the songs already but she was given a set list about a week in advance. So what she did was memorize how to sign and then she planned how she was going to move to each song. I'm guessing she knew how the music was going to sound too with the remix versions and stuff because Rude Boy was insane! But as far as your question about how they can stay the beat/know the beat - for someone who is profoundly or completely deaf, they can usually feel it in their feet. I've seen deaf musicians/singers on talent shows and they come on stage barefoot or just in socks. It's for that reason. I have partial hearing loss myself and I can tell you I can feel sound sometimes better than I can hear it on a bad day.
@@victorialopez9717 wow!! Thank you so much for this. This is exactly what I wanted to know! That is all so awesome! And it is so fun to watch! Thanks so very much for informing me!!!
You out into words what I felt. I was like this is what it looks like when someone is living out their purpose and destiny. N I felt very emotional throughout the whole thing.
I am a beginner when it comes to sign language and it is not easy to understand at times. I enjoyed every second of her interpretation of the halftime performance. Smiling from ear to ear ❤
Riri's performance while being pregnant, those talented backup dancers and this amazing interpretor made this halftime show the greatest super bowl halftime show ever. Well done team super bowl
Definitely not the best IMO but it was a good performance. I honestly think Prince's halftime show was the best Superbowl performance. If you haven't seen it I'm pretty sure you can find it on RU-vid.
@@hippo440 I'm tired of there always being a scandal because something outrageous happened in the show. This was great and refreshing to see it all go right. Rihanna doesn't have to fake a scandal, she trusted her performance
Watching her makes me wanna cry. I don’t even know her and I’m so freaking proud of her and happy that she’s getting recognized. She has such a bright and infectious energy about her, not to mention how beautiful she is. Can’t wait to see more stunning performances from her.

rihanna’s discography is so crazzzyyy i see why she’s done w this music thing lmao she ended on a BANG!! this talented queen brought so much justice to the music, she IS equivalent to the original hearing version if not better
i remember like 8 years ago there was another interpreter who was this level of skill. she did the ASL for eminems RAP GOD and she still somehow managed to keep all the beats in too. theres like only a handful of interpreters of this skill level and they are UNMATCHED. i love watching the ASL performers at all concerts
I have seen a musical with an interpreter. They were not only interpreting, they were actually acting and during the songs, they would dance to show the beat just like Justina. What these guys do is amazing ❤️
She really popped off on Pour It Up and slayed the entire performance. Even before knowing she wanted the deaf community to feel everything that was what I noticed. She would imitate going across the Tom’s on a drum kit and accentuated every bass kick and all the rhythmic Melodie’s perfectly matched the energy of the songs. Really cool to see something I’d love to do since that’ll be my main area of study in grad school (:
It's so cool how she uses her motions to convey the beats in the music during breaks in singing. Interpreting music seems so hard because of the emotions conveyed and the music itself but she absolutely nailed all of it.
She is gonna be booked solid for the rest of the year for all types of events. Great job Justina. You mesmerizing talent draws everyone's attention. ❤️❤️
I doubt booked for the rest of the year. Because there are other interpreters that does the same as her. more opportunities yes, plus she’s in school to become a nurse.
Watching her perform made me wish she was featured on the regular telecast so everyone got the chance to appreciate her performance. Also, it made me grateful to have the ability to hear music. Imagine if someday all deaf people gained the ability to hear.
She can't interpret on the spot because she's deaf herself. She needs to memorize the track set, the beat and everything beforehand. Most interpreters you see on TV are hearing people translating what they hear to sign language. What Justina did is a performance on its own
@@FeliciaKrismanta I’m not sure I follow. What do you mean by “on the spot” - the whole performance (including her own, as she says here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BlTsBxu8KiQ.html ) was rehearsed down to the T, so why would that prevent her from being featured live? In some ways, isn’t it at some level a rehearsed performance, just like everyone who was featured on the telecast?
Some people are so talented that you create a position for them. This young lady is such a person. I would finance this young lady in a heartbeat. She is such a credit to the ASL community.
I don't know how they found her, but l am glad they did. She is phenomenal!!! There may be a new career, after she graduates from college! She gave the world a performance!!!! And a fantastic one indeed!!!!
This girl is amazing!! I'm not deaf-but can't imagine a better way to make the deaf community feel that vibe- So much more passion than anything else in that show!! Keep crushing it!!
This performance makes me so emotional every time I watch it. I’ve always loved music, but both my parents are deaf so I’ve never been able to share my love for music with them in a meaningful way until now. She’s amazing, & I am so grateful for this video.
My dad owns a car dealer and his employee who details the cars is deaf. Idk why but this hit me in the feels. The fact that this woman puts so much passion so the deaf community can enjoy Rihanna’s performance is so beautiful
As a person who can hear, and enjoys music on a daily basis, just looking at this video without any sound conveys so much to the point where I can imagine the music in my head (yes, I'm a fan of Riri and am familiar with most of her songs) but even without that, her body language, rhythm and movements, her whole body emits music. I can't understand any of the signs, but by lip-reading I can recognize the songs, and the signs are often self-explanatory, just wow... Mad respect for her. 👏👏👏
How you received over 200 likes for this comment is mind blowing. Especially since it makes absolutely NO SENSE. She's like 20 years old, so how could she be the mother you never had? And the rest of your comment, like you know her personally, which more than likely you don't. SMDH, people need to stop liking nonsense.
This woman is so entertaining & moves so fluently. I could watch her for hours and not get bored, she killed this! Definitely deserves all the praise she’s gotten. She isn’t easy!
Give her an award!! She's not just doing her job as an interpreter but giving a wonderful performance to the deaf community. Hats off to you beautiful lady. ♥️♥️♥️
She's legally defined as deaf, but she can hear a little. She knows all of Rihanna's songs. She was given the music set list like 2-3 days before the Superbowl, so she had time to practice her dance moves. I saw her in an interview. She states she wanted those watching her to feel the music.
She is so incredible! Her energy is infectious! I found myself so much more affected by the show when I watched this young woman put her magic into interpretation! Thank you Justina Miles for gifting us your talent!
This was such a beautiful performance.. she gave a awesome show. People were able to actually see a performance while she signed for them. This brought tears to my eyes because it was so beautiful..
Had me in tears the whole video, so much heart and soul in her performance, seeing how she signs the beats and everything and she does just does something to me
I’m not a fan of Rhinna’s music but I’ve watched this girl doing this performance dozens of time and I’ve moved to tears each time. I pray she gets the recognition she deserves. I am proud to say I am a fan.
I'm always confused and AMAZED by how deaf people are able to feel, interpret, convey music. Especially the beats and the energy of the song. Like it's really beautiful and miraculous. I loved every second of this ❤️
Facial expressions and energy are really important in sign language. People don't just talk with their hands, they emote with their eyes, mouth and whole body to add emphasis, just like we raise and lower pitch in spoken language. Rolling your eyes, shrugging shoulders, grinning slyly, these add tone and context to the facts being conveyed. She really nailed it!
