I love that Grapevine going up that steep hill. Someday I'm going to drive it. Never driven to SoCal except flew into San Diego Airport up to LegoLand on I-5. I love that Newhall interchange.

Going north at night down the North End of the Grapevine Interstate 5 drop down into Bakersfield that is a beautiful sight with the tail lights streaming for many many miles and red

Definitely one of the most beautiful road videos I've ever seen. Awesome skies, awesome mountains, and the newhall pass interchange is just too good.

The Sierra Highway is where the movie _Duel_ was filmed. Magic Mountain is where singer JoJo's music video for the song "Baby, It's You" was filmed.

Really great lighting on this one, even on the cloudy parts. That light frosting of snow on the mountains at the beginning looked fantastic.

Thanks! I was actually worried that the cloudy sections might look a bit too dull and uninteresting.

Fabulous video! Great work on the signage as usual, and the setting is pretty hard to beat, as far as Interstate highways are concerned. Insane traffic for an 8 lane mountain freeway (it's so rare to even find an 8 lane rural freeway in a mountainous setting). Added this to my favorites list.

Superb job, as always, AR! Been on that stretch many times, and it's always exciting -- hazardous, too. Next time you're in the area, take the Frazier Mtn exit to Mt Pinos. Thx for creating, sharing and driving!

Great ride. Almost seemed liked those first two songs blended together. I did like the switchback in the mountains. If only I had mountains to meander through around here.
@AmericanRoads
@AmericanRoads 7 лет назад
Thanks. That was deliberate. Whenever two songs with very similar tempo are played back-to-back, I always try to sync their beats in such a way so that they transition as seamlessly as possible. The transition would usually sound even better if both songs happen to use the same key. So, I try to take advantage of that as well, whenever possible.

Great video and music! The traffic volume is insane so far out of Los Angeles. You don't see a long rural stretch of eight-lane highway that often. Not to mention that congested.

I just realized that the second song has a somewhat similar musical style to your opening song.

Most of this isn’t even in LA county yet. Coming up the grapevine you’re still in Kern county, by Bakersfield. California is just over congested no matter where you are.

So. Much. Congestion. Even that far outside of LA. Crazy.

I feel sorry for those people who had to endure that traffic just to play with the snow. By the time they reached the top, it was most likely already dark.

...Or the snow had all melted by then! heh heh.

What!? No more snow!? Heck, let's mud-slide then!

Yup, California really is the traffic king of the United States. You should see what it's like, trying to leave or enter the San Francisco Bay Area on a Friday, Sunday or especially during a holiday period. Miles and miles of endless traffic delays on I-5, I-80, I-580, US 101, CA 99 and a number of other routes.

Or San Diego, and even into Mexico. Sometimes I-15 will back up close to Escondido leaving the San Diego area, as daily rush hour back-ups heading toward Temecula and Murieta reach CA-76 (with jammed traffic most of the way from Murrieta to just south of Escondido during morning commutes) and holiday and weekend back-ups will sometimes back up within 5-8 miles of the Escondido city limits. And that's an area where there's no widening project expected in the near future, and the same is true of I-5 in Camp Pendleton, where back-ups between San Clemente and Oceanside are commonplace, especially SB because of the horrendous CA-78 interchange that ends in a stop light. In addition, I-5 and I-805 going into Mexico isn't that much better, as back-ups can reach up to three miles entering Mexico. Even WB I-8 gets into the act when the Border Patrol checkpoint near Sunrise Highway, as that can sometimes back up all the way to Buckman Springs Rd., some 3 miles from the checkpoint, because the checks from U.S. Customs take one of the two available lanes.

Lol... in California it's more green in winter while in the other Tejon Pass video from summertime everything was brown

WizardToby because it rains and snows in the winter and in the summer it don’t. Perfectly normal.

What are the mountains way off in the distance to the south near the end of this video?

How do you mount your camera on the dash?
@AmericanRoads
@AmericanRoads 7 лет назад
I do not mount my camera on the dash. I setup a tripod in between the driver's and passenger's seat, and put my camera on it. I tie the tripod with a bungee cord to keep it firmly-planted on the floor and prevent it from tilting.

Why did it say Avoid Overheating, Turn off A/C? Won't you be freezing?
@AmericanRoads

Actually, no, you won't. You will be freezing, however, if you are turning ON the A/C. Am I right?

American Roads Lol!!! Ikr!!?? This guy's never been on the grapevine I'm assuming. Travel it many times and no matter how cool outside, I always turn my engine cooling fan to manual and run it all the way to the top. And if it's cold enough outside, I turn my HEAT all the way up and roll the windows down. And I love the musical arrangement!!! LRB and Doobie Brothers still rock in my truck.

I know Tejon Pass, but I somehow wondered why people refer to Tejon Pass as the Grapevine?
@AmericanRoads
@AmericanRoads 6 лет назад
You know what, I used to be asking the same question! Tejon Pass and Grapevine are actually at very close proximity with each other. Tejon Pass specifically refers to the highest point along the the I-5. If you are heading north, Grapevine is located very shortly after the Tejon Pass and most often refers to the steep grade into the Central Valley. At the foot of the mountain (shown in the beginning of the video), you can see an exit named "Grapevine".
@BritishMetric144
@BritishMetric144 5 лет назад
Actually, tejon pass is the second highest point on I-5, at 4144 feet. The highest is oregon’s Siskiyou summit at 4310 feet.

It's even better with the sound TURNED OFF.

Aren't you glad there is mute button? But seriously, did you really watch the whole thing without any sounds? Not even your own choice of songs? If you did, I applaud you. That would have been too boring for me.
