the parking garage at 8:16 is probably a cornerstone of the I-10

I'm enjoying the ride, but I don't miss that traffic, and most of all, I don't miss the lane divers. Gawd, I hate those people. I'm old enough that I remember when the freeway signs also listed the colloquial names for the freeways (and highways), but they stopped doing that not long after I moved out of L.A., actually. I can't remember, but I don't think that was convention when I lived over in Ventura. It's confusing for newcomers, or it used to be, back in the days of Thomas Guides, paper maps, and people giving directions. For instance: the 10 Freeway, as it's colloquially known, is the Santa Monica Freeway west of the (East L.A.) Interchange, but the San Bernadino Freeway east of the Interchange. I-5 is the San Diego Freeway south of El Toro, but the Santa Ana Freeway from El Toro to the Interchange - which is weird if you know that odd-numbered roads in this country run north and south - and the Golden State Freeway from the Interchange to Kern county. It got worse, because not only are there state routes (SR) that have the same numbering system as the freeways, they sometimes are part of the freeway, and sometimes not. Plus, the aforementioned Santa Ana Freeway is also the 101 - which used to follow the 134, which used to follow Colorado Blvd. Which may have been renamed to Colorado Street in Glendale and Arcadia. Who cares what those nuts do? Oh, and the (US) 101 is the Ventura Freeway, except it's really not; that's the (US) 134, which has the most exciting exits for modern cars when they were designed for Model A's, or something. Yeah, no. No they're not. Plus, and this used be a problem, probably not so much any more, but the 405 (aka "the Parking Lot") is ALSO the San Diego Freeway, from....El Toro to San Fernando, I think. Don't quote me on that. Plus, this is probably true of a lot of places, the official name and what people call it are completely different. I live not far from the Thomas Johnson bridge, but nobody calls it that. It's the Solomons Island bridge, or just the Solomons bridge. We'd listen to the traffic reports in the morning, as well as in our cars, and most of the affected highways were called out by their names. So you kind of had to know both the names of the freeways as well as the numbers. That way, if you heard that there was a sig alert on the Long Beach Freeway, you'd know to take an alternate route. In fact, they used to suggest alternate routes on the AM stations where the news, weather, and sports were located.
