I interviewed Mary Chapin Carpenter for Ohio NPR affiliate WOUB Public Media shortly before her co-headlining tour with Shawn Colvin. We discussed "Down at the Twist and Shout," Mary Chapin's career launching in her 30s, Songs From Home, One Night Lonely, Paula Poundstone, The Things We Are Made Of, Dirt and the Stars, David Cobb, Ethan Johns, Duke Levine, ‪@BrandiCarlile‬Brandi Carlile's Girls Just Wanna Weekend, and much more.

My favorite female "anthem vocalists!" Of course, "Passionate Kisses" tops my list of her recordings! Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter!❤

Ironically, I saw Lucinda Williams - who wrote “Passionate Kisses” - in Dallas on the night before my Mary Chapin interview was published! 🤠 Thanks so much for listening; I hope that you enjoyed our interview.

I guess part of that resurgence is that this year Key Western Fest was about those 90's ladies. Winona opened, Terri, Sara, and Suzy Bogguss, performed during the week, then Jo Dee Messina closed. I heard about it from Suzy Bogguss talking about the fest on Wine Down Wednesday ( her weekly Facebook and RU-vid stream). I used to get Mary Chapin Carpenter and Suzy Bogguss CD's to play on a CD player I won. Not having the budget to buy the CD's led me to loose touch with them. Now RU-vid gives me a surreal connection to them as people, performers and artists. Suzy has a new album and now I know about "One Night Lonely" so I can keep building the connections so they don't slip away again. Thanks for this appropriately long interview!

Thank you so much for listening to my interview with Mary Chapin - you're right, her catalogue warrants a long, steady review! 🤗 Fun fact: my first interview for my NPR affiliate was Terri Clark! She was playing a "Chicks With Hits" show with Suzy Bogguss and Pam Tillis, the latter of whom I had the privilege to interview in Nashville... thanks also for your thoughtful reflection on what's powering that 90s female country resurgence - me and Pam talked quite a bit about this, a couple months after I spoke to Mary! Lastly, I'm thrilled to hear that my interview stirred you to check out One Night Lonely 🤩 What did you think of it?

Great interview. With MCC you always get the real deal. She and Shawn are wonderful together on the road. Appreciatively 🇨🇦 🍁!

@@iansaint grew up just a little north of Toronto. Have been able to catch both Mary Chapin and Shawn in Toronto and MCC years ago at Mariposa Folk Festival. Caught their tour this past October in NY. Both are excellent artists -- from storytellers to guitarists! Best to you.

Great interview. Always love to hear MCC. But, the interviewer said MCC was wearing “dirty yoga pants” on her Songs from Home?! 😳. NOT! She looked great/so cute in her father’s red Princeton cap, those wonderful purple sneakers, the very same jacket/sweatshirt I wear, and those black comfortable slacks. She was home, it was REAL, she was so humble, so warm, so human. It made her one of us!!!! Love her for that. Thanks MCC, for always being you! 💜

Thank you; I’m thrilled that you enjoyed our interview so! 😍 “Dirty yoga pants” is how she captioned that first SFH video - her words, not mine! 🤣 Isn’t it amazing to hear how organically One Night Lonely sprang from SFH??

One almost needs to have been there to know how special a connection SFH created, but I like the way your comment conveys the experience. I am glad to see the clarifying response to your comment! Luckily I have been listening again to some of those songs so this interview was recommended for me. Stay mighty!

Ah…so good to hear it was MCC herself..though she was way too self-deprecating on that one, eh? But that’s MCC, isn’t it? Humble. But that exactly why I liked SFH…she seemed like the friendly girl next door who happened to be able to sing and play the guitar really well, and create magic through her lyrics and song. Enjoyed the interview! Thanks!

@@lindapeterson8911 Yes, her self-deprecation is hilarious and infectious - and so is Shawn's, I can see why they're longtime partners! 😃 But MCC is also quick to remind of her accolades when warranted - she's got the balance down pat, in a graceful manner that I've taken note of (I'm a bit too heavy on self-deprecation). Thanks so much for your wonderful feedback... I've interviewed many of MCC's peers (Wynonna Judd, Lorrie Morgan, Terri Clark, Sara Evans, etc.) so hopefully I'll encounter you on another video if you're inclined to Subscribe! ☺ Take care, Linda!

Thank you, Diane - I'm thrilled that you enjoyed our interview, and felt that MCC enjoyed it as well! 🤠 I had a ball of talking to her. Wasn't she funny in the part about not having to try and go viral on TikTok?

Thank you for this interview. Songs from home really helped me because Dad died in late 2019. My wife's leukemia kicked up in 2020, and she died that September. I hope someday to meet her. I sing some of songs for my Memory Care friends. Thanks

Tex, I am very honored that my interview touched you so 🥲 Thank you for listening, and sharing this incredible comment! Sorry for the losses of your father and wife, that is heart-wrenching. I’m glad that Mary Chapin brought you solace in your time of immense grief. If I cross paths with her again, I’d love to share your story! 🙏

By all means, share it with Mary Chapin. I volunteer sing for Memory Care residents about 20 hours a week, acoustically. Resident group size ranges from 18 to 80+, usually 20s. If you or she ever visits Yellowstone to Glacier, please stop in Helena and I can give you a tour of the Cathedral of St. Helena. Thanks

I think the interviewer got her math wrong. The original interview was in 2002 and it’s now 2024. That would be 22 years later not 28. Sorry, stuff like this bugs me.

The GMA interview was in 1992; and Songs From Home was in 2020 🤠 We were reflecting on the nerves of her massive Grammy night, and her comfort with surrendering glam 28 years later. Hope that you enjoy the interview; I love hearing feedback from the artist's fans! 🙏
