I am ok with your approach on this video. But I may be bias because I live in China and still to this day hate when I hear a translator speaking over a Chinese speaker. I tend to get caught up listening to both languages and I end up missing a lot of points.

You may want to do a story on the number of Xinjiang BBQ places there are throughout China. I think in my town it has been beneficial for local Chinese to get to know Uyghur people and also eat some great food.

Personally I would include his voice and have English/Chinese subtitle overlay. People can potentially mis-translate what he was saying and if you have viewers who can speak the Uyghur language then they can comment on what was actually said. That way people won't say you are hiding anything by masking out his voice.

I honestly think that letting the audio go and put subtitles is much better, and then you don't need to add the translators audio.

I was in china in 2000, then I periodically go visit every 7 to 8 years. It amazes me to see the development that took place. It's like I'm traveling through different eras each time I go back. If only the western medias also pick up the infrastructural growth and the quality of life improvements. They miss the point that how far china has come and other factors like population and even the militarization of the South China Sea. When you look at it exclusively, yes china looks like the aggressor. But as a whole picture it's just a defensive tactic to repel the military web the US has set up.

Things are comlex, China has its own problem too, but in general, Chinese are working hard to improve their life, and goverment does the right thing(most of the time). Pepe roni, The thing about Iraq is the liberal media at the time was sceptical about the WMD claims. A lot of people were. There were record breaking protests leading up to the war to decry the warmongering. So when the same media now pushes lies about China, they have an air of credibility. I have my theories about why it's different for China. One, as a longtime adversary of the West, the propaganda against China is much more established and entrenched. So much so that it's baked into the fabric of society. Two, the US gov learned something from Iraq and this time ensured that their propaganda efforts were more comprehensive. (Edit: I have to add it's not just Iraq. People came out massively against the Vietnam War. The Western world had a vibrant antiwar movement. I say "had" because it's dead in the water in the 2020s). At the end of the day, we have to keep countering these lies. Having a defeatist attitude that it's a waste of time only hurts ourselves.

Also the "mentality" and exposure level of rural China especially in the poor provinces can be considered "pathetic" in comparison with the 1st world BUT such phenomenon is NOT exclusive to the rural China. It's ubiquitous in every developing nations, even within the urbanites (including countries that had developed for decades). Fortunately the Central government of China is relatively very effective in monitoring and correcting the local governments. Very well put. This is such a serious and important topic to have somebody who is not actually fluent in English to translate it. Her mandarin sounded native so really she should’ve just done the translation in mandarin and just use English subtitles for the English speaking audience. She ended up transmitting no real useful insight just really basic phrases, it’s overall a disappointing interview from Daniel. Very low quality relative to what he put out before.

Daniel's Mandarin might have been better than the Imam's. You could hear him speak for a moment and he had a really thick accent. That's why it was more comfortable for him to interview via the Uighur translator.

The Imam has a northwestern mandarin dialect accent. Daniel probably learned standard mandarin.

I don't think he labeled it so much as propaganda, but just noted that any reporting on it would be seen as propaganda. I fully expect local governments to celebrate the success of any project. Public relations and hype are part of the process. I think he was just calling out the double standard of Western media that doesn't critique their governments the same way. But read or watch any local news, and you similar stories everywhere, and most are just a photo op for the next round of campaign literature with little substance to back it up.

I think I have watched one of those, came up on my yt suggested videos. It’s targeting middle eastern audiences. Had over a million views. That guy never really talked to or interviewed any local people in the video, but made comments about people being not happy, praying not allowed in mosques, locals not allowed to fast during Ramadan..... Seemed weird to me, but many people would probably take his words at face value. I went on trips to Silk Road in 1998 and 2019, I witnessed the development and how people of all ethnic groups have improved, they were living normal lives, so these genocide accusations seem really far fetched. I also went to HK during the protest in 2019, when we came back to Canada, we couldn’t believe how biased the news here was, describing the protesters as peaceful. What happened in the past two years have showed me the reality that I wasn’t aware of, it’s a belated disillusionment, but better than staying ignorant forever.

I think this is the manifestation that in the field of journalism, market is not the answer to produce real responsable and honest media.

yes a double-sided sword. while we can clearly see the flaws in Chinese system but also let's keep in mind that no politician was held accountable for 500,000+ death during pandemic in US or the illegal invasion of Iraq. i think this world needs balance and time to think through the choices but right now one side is actively trying to accuse and eliminate other choices. "our way is the only way, and all the rest is evil” you guys know whom I'm talking about.
