I chose to stop believing in God for about a decade for the same reason Carl. I felt like I was being dishonest because I was skeptical and wasn't a full believer. I realize now it led to a decade of misery and caused me to fall into sinful behaviors that caused a lot of suffering that I am still dealing with today. After being at an extremely low point in my life due to losing multiple jobs to the lockdowns and vaccine mandates and just having a load of despair related to all of the Covid insanity, about a year and a half ago I decided to force God back into my life whether I fully believed or not. My life has turned around completely since doing that and my outlook has changed substantially. I still can't say I fully believe in God but I am trying to live my life as if he does exist as best as possible. I ask for signs of his existence and sometimes I do feel like I get an answer, but so far I haven't crossed into that space where I truly 100% believe. I think God will forgive us for that.

@getthepoo, I forget the chapter and verse, but there's a passage in the new Testament where Jesus asks a guy, "do you believe?" (In regards to healing, if I recall) and the guy responds, "lord I believe, help my unbelief." That this conversation was seen as worth recording is, I think, important. Our belief wouldn't seem to need to be perfect in order for it to be enough.

We all struggle with doubt, even those of us closest to Christ. Remember how Peter doubted Jesus while standing atop stormy waters, or how Thomas doubted the witness of the other apostles, or how James and John fled with the others when Jesus was arrested. It is part of our sinful nature to doubt and be unsure. Often, it seems as though God lets us wander just so we appreciate Him all the more. He is never absent, though, and He promises that those who seek will find. Pray for faith and discernment, for yourselves and one another. God is generous, but His ways are often confusing and unpleasant.

Brilliant! I'm a Canadian who was raised in a denomination that has become very progressive. There was no difference between them and the world. I wandered to some dark places in my personal life and saw that the world offers nothing. In my 40s I started finding my way back to Christ. I researched Christian history, patristics, and theology. I am now a confirmed Catholic. How I wish I had that structure and community when I was younger. How I wish I had been in an environment that fosters virtue and a relationship with God. Now I look at Canadian society and see what a mess we are in. It is full of people who are as lost as I was a decade ago. At least I am old enough to remember when society had more stability, truth, and tradition. Will today's children even understand what they have lost? In Canada, you know our leadership is corrupt, arrogant, and self-interested. It is futile to place hope in them. I do pray for Christ to return to the centre of our society. I feel only He can help us now. And I pray for my husband who like Carl, is a good man, but does not believe.

Amen amen. We all fall short of the glory of God though, so don't be too hard on yourself. It is an opportunity to grow and become a better Christian. Keep the Lord in your thoughts and He will stay close to you, help and guide you to becoming a better you. Go to church, partake in communion (whatever your tradition calls it, the Lord's Supper, Eucharist, etc.), read the Scriptures, live the Christian life, and the world will improve as a result. Don't listen to hard-hearted people like our lost friend above me. The Lord keeps His promises, and He said "For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:40)

It was amazingly heartfelt. Rev. Robinson obviously lives and breathes the Christian message with more enthusiasm and humility than 99% of his brethren. However, when seeking to convert others (especially those of a sceptical nature like Carl), emphasising heaven isn't the best tactic. There is no evidence for any afterlife and by definition is something that we won't know until we are dead. Instead, focus on how Christianity builds better, morally stronger communities and families in the here and now.

It is nostalgia for the past - in which many things were better. But religious doctrines have been scrutinised more closely in recent decades (at least since the publication of 'Honest to God' by Bishop John Robinson in 1963) and for most of us today do not hold water. People may blame Richard Dawkins for making religion unbelievable, but actually it was Honest to God that did it.
@SeanWinters
@SeanWinters 9 месяцев назад
@@saltburner2Honestly? For most of these people, these atheists, they have zero reasoning abilities when it comes to God. For the vast majority it's "someone did something bad, therefore God doesn't exist". In reality, for this majority, it's an excuse to live as if their only moral restrictions come from "within", which is a total load.
@saltburner2
@saltburner2 9 месяцев назад
@@SeanWinters I strongly disagree. All the educated atheists I have known personally had excellent reasoning capacities - several were university professors. None of them believed that God can be disproved (one cannot prove a negative), they simply deny that there is any evidence or good reason to believe in a God or gods. Neither does the positing of God solve any problems - it simply creates more. The existence of evil, including moral evil, neither proves not disproves the existence of God - though some have argued that natural evil disproves a loving God. If the rejection of God were simply a licence for moral turpitude, it would be disgraceful. We need better reasons for choosing good over evil, and that is the thriving of human society, something we all (apart perhaps for a few psychopaths) presumably consider desirable and constituting a moral obligation upon us.

Very enjoyable discussion, so lovely to listen to two lovely, honest men talk about something that few have the courage to tackle. As someone who was raised as a Catholic, I left the church many years ago as a young adult but returned to it in my 30s. I left again when I learned the truth about the church's corruption and involvement in our slavery. I cannot walk into my village church knowing what I now know. Yet, I believe in Jesus, the Man and the Divine Ascended Master. I am closer to my Divine Creator now more than at any time in my life. I think Atheism is the greatest achievement of the Khazarian Mafia. They have capitilised on man's sinful arrogance (ego) to believe that he is the greatest entity in the Universe by using propaganda and brainwashing to underpin such an egregious lie. I have great faith that the truth about our salvation will soon be forthcoming and that our churches will one day flourish again, safe in knowledge and love. Ministers like Father Calvin are leading the way and I thank God for him and those like him.

I have been a nonbeliever my entire life. I'm also a non-Christian. If I was not an atheist, I would still not be a Christian. As a citizen of a largely Christian nation, it would put me at even more of a disadvantage than I am already in. I am a materialist extremist. I do not believe anything to exist beyond the natural world. Inevitably, I think about death every day. I exist, my family exists, my community exists, but one day I and everyone I've ever met will be dead. One day I and everyone I've ever met will be forgotten. I do not have a nice and neat conclusion to this thought, but it is necessary to mention when talking about religion. The religious influences of my family were varied throughout my childhood. Former believers, former atheists, lifelong believers, lifelong atheists. My parents, never interested in committing to giving me a religious upbringing themselves, gave up paying lip service to their parents early on, but they were laissez-faire about religion. I was not subjected to state atheism at their hands. I could have gone either way growing up. I believe what I believe whether I want to or not. My beliefs simply are. They may change, but it is not by my will, they change as a result of changing values or changing information. Or perhaps by violent persecution. Everyone has a breaking point. I do not trust Christians not to return to inquisition. Christianity is only a few crowns short of being another Islam. Every time a Calvin Robinson video comes out, I see an overwhelming majority of comments pushing Christianity, and I have the urge to represent atheist thought. Someone has to do it. From Carl's perspective as a nonbeliever, he has not gifted his children the promise of Heaven, he has gifted them with the belief of the promise of Heaven. He can't give to his children that which he does not believe exists. I'm actually kind of disappointed he didn't make this point himself. He has expressed concern for the preservation of England's traditions, including the Christian ones. That makes perfect sense in terms of his politics, but it also speaks to a mercenary motivation to participate in religious activities. I think the reason Carl doesn't push back on Calvin is because, despite his lack of belief, he still wants Calvin to spread Christianity, because Carl believes Christianity is an important element of Englishness. But that does not in the slightest suggest faith on Carl's part. I wonder if Carl feels like he's less English than other Englishmen on account of his atheism. On a final related note, I feel that it's important to remember that not every religion has a homeland. For me, living anywhere other than America would be stranding me in a foreign place of a foreign culture, and possibly a foreign language, where I don't know anyone and would effectively have to start from zero. America's most important proposition ensures I have a place in American culture regardless of faith. It was so important in the eyes of the founding fathers that they put it before the freedom of speech.
@mikeallan7740

Carl doesn't provide much push back when nonsensical claims are made against atheism despite being an atheist because he knows it may hurt his viewer base. An act of dishonest self preservation. And as Marcus Aurelius said (i think): if there is a god and he is virtuous, it only matters that you are good. If anything why would a god demand that people worship him in the first place? We know from cults of personalities, like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, the Kim dynasty, how f***ed up it makes those people. A god who demands worship, or even allows worship is an immoral being. As such the Marcus Aurelius quote holds true. Two soldiers might kill in war but one go to hell for enjoying it without remorse while the other is safe for considering it his duty. Instantly my anxiety, my aching, headache and stomach pains were gone. My body was filled with a warmth and confort, and I looked for it's source and could stare directly at the setting sun. It was a moment I'm unlikely to ever feel again in this life. I didn't convert back to faith that day, I was still too stubborn, but over the next years God kept softening my heart and I began to see the truth in everyday life. Finally around the time of last easter I was convinced by the historical argument for Jesus' ressurection, from which logically followed that He is God and Christianity is true. Once you take that leap of faith its almost surreal how obvious the truth of Christianity becomes. You just see pieces of evidence everywhere and feel dumstruck that you couldn't or refused to connect the dots earlier. I find it intrusive and not at all conducive to one’s ‘journey to Christ’, which is seemingly supposed to be a deeply personal and authentic one, and not merely a case of convincing someone to join your cult.

You find it intrusive that people wish for you to experience the blessings of the Lord? That's a rather odd take. Do you tell off the person at the register who wishes you a nice day too?

@@nethrelm If every interaction between a religious person and a non-believer had the same degree of investment from the atheist side of things: "Oh, he's so close to letting go", etc... then i'd understand if religious people started not liking to engage with non-believers. It would mean a (hopefully productive) conversation about the nature of morality or the importance of systems that uphold morality, etc. is perceived by one side as an oportunity to make people join them rather than take the lessons from the interaction to improve as people, or deepen their perception on what they believe in. If the interaction has something like this in its subtext, it means there's a lack of respect for the other person's viewpoint. A person at a register telling you to have a nice day is not the same as what's happening in this comment section. It is closer to an atheist celebrating that a religious person didn't pray for one week, or that they're having doubts about their faith. P.S. Bloodborne is great. No clashes on that

great conversation. I do agree that the country has lost it's faith in God and that is why the country is in such a state. But I would also say that we have lost our connection to the land, particularly of farming and the natural rhythm of the seasons. So many people have no connection with the land and along with their lost faith in God, has brought the country to where it is now.

Not religious, but I do get that loosing connection with the land & nature. Sadly like so many people of today they are a product of modernity & technophilla. This is where the older generation can come in and step up and show the kids alternatives.

Which God ?
@PrivateCitizen84
@PrivateCitizen84 9 месяцев назад
@@snowflakemelter1172Whatcha mean which God? If God is the creator of life the universe and everything then why would God have an identity crisis? God would know who God is or isn't. Just take humanity out of the equation before a time they existed. No man, no religion, but the basic question still stands. What if anything created life the universe and everything before man and his religions existed.
