That’s a big 10-4,but after the whole lazer pig crap I don’t care much for him because of the attitude he showed, and I’m by no means a lazer pig “fan boy” and couldn’t care less about lazer pig but cone came across as a smart a$$,meh, whatever though 🤷♂️
It was great meeting you and having a chance to do this short interview with you. The only complaint I have is that standing next to you makes me look short...
Slight change of topic, but I had always thought that cone of arc had to do with the arcs of fire of various weapons systems in various vehicles. There I went thinking again. 🙂
@@TheChieftainsHatch which is surprising given the very not small aspect of tanks being tanks tbh am heading down to dorset around march time and i'd laugh if i ever run into you while being a scuttling goblin. and if so, we're having a pint. this is not up for discussion, free booze for you. so if we do run into one another, am not exactly... discrete, why not have a chat. be nice to speak to my tank mentor who opened my eyes to the glory of needs must and doctrine demand. and that soviet stuff really is not that bad, more less than ideal.
@@HSS_yt Speaking of Drachinefel, he gets around a bit too. He was featured at least once in one of Matt Easton's (of Scholagladiatoria) videos and Matt talks about swords, armnor and HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Although I believe that the Tank Museum at Bovington did invite him down there recently to a top 5 tank video.
I guess you could bring an average person to a tank museum. Or perhaps you'd have to bring several people and some industrial equipment to... 'average them' onsite.
Wow, this was fun watching these 2 guys together! The Chieftain being so humble about being old and having a dry sense of humor(yet he has the beasty rabbit from Monty Python), then giving ConeofArc the ultimate compliment (about the student becoming the master), and it goes woosh right over Cone's head. 🤣 The T-29 made such a splendid backdrop for this meeting of giants. Bravo! ☺️👏
I have to admit, combining "Joan of Arc" and "Cone" to "Cone of Arc" is actually pretty genius. At least it's more creative than what other YTers use. Imagine just naming yourself after a British 2nd Gen MBT!
@@hunter_0221 You don't think, like CoA, that he saw the double meaning? Why, as an Irish American, would he name himself primarily after a _British_ tank? Surely the Irish meaning would take precedence.
@@hunter_0221 Look him up on Wikipedia. Born in California, of an Irish father, he served in both the Irish Army Reserve, then the US Army National Guard in Iraq & Afghanistan. He was previously of dual citizenship, but renounced his Irish nationality when he was commissioned as a US officer.
A light format for information about a vehicle that is still accurate is needed. The Chieftain and Cone of Arc cover the need for information about tanks in this regard. I have seen friends that took the stuff from Lazerpig seriously but could not warm them up to Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles as this goes far to deep into the details. Like Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles 4 part series about the Nakajima Ki-84 fighter prop or his video about the FW 190s Kommandogerät (mechanical computer). So a middle ground between both parts of the spectrum (Lazerpig = entertaining but a lot of misinformation and Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles = "the test is in 2 weeks, class dismissed!") is usefull.
Idk why Lazer had to get so butt hurt about that fact. His videos were good entry level content for entry level historians. Then when they get more involved in the info, they’ll go to Cone, Red Effect, and Chieftain. But they’ll still watch Lazer because he was entertaining. Why did he have to get so butt hurt over not being perfect?!?
Once i travelled to the USA and went to the museum on long island, the nice sir working there said the Chieftain was there 1 week prior, so close. Nice to have the T29 on the background my favorite tank =)
If you don't already have it, I recommend: "Pictorial history of Tanks of the World, 1915-1945"; Peter Chamberlain & Chris Ellis. (Galahad Books), 1972. Love both your channels and eagerly watch for them.
Chieftain, the ever-true officer, recruits people after asking them what are they like😅❤ I'm sure there's a recruiter hiding in one of the tanks, with all the forms ready
I find it quite funny looking, I love the fact those massive rangefinder optics on the turret sides make it look like a baby battleship turret, "little" thing just hatched :D
I'm already subscribed to both channels because it gives the best of both you get an in-depth look at the development as well as an in-depth look at the vehicle itself both exterior and interior
Chieftain, thank you for talking about the armor collection open houses. I did not know about them and how the public can get access to this amazing collection. It's one of my bucket list items to come and view the collection and until now I had no idea you actually could!
Nice random cross-over. I quite like the content of both of your channels, so this was fun. I've always been a low-key history and tank nerd, but I totally get what you were talking about with regards to gaming and such getting more people interested in this stuff. It's one of the reasons I always think they should strive to be as accurate as they can wherever they can, without compromising the story they want to tell. Getting the details right always makes things feel more authentic, even if they aren't exactly realistic or 100% accurate.
Interesting fact. The very first Krupp Nickel-Chromium armor plate )Test Plate #420) was made by hand in 1894. It was a carefully cleaned and purified (reducing Sulfur and Phosphorus and any other impurity to the desired alloy) circa-0.3%-Carbon Silicon-Manganese "mild" steel with roughly 2.5% Chromium and 4.5% Nickel added, the first for extra hardening ability without problems with higher Carbon steels and the latter for toughness (reduced cracking on heavy impact). It was thus called by Krupp "Type 420 Steel". It could also form the basis for moderately-high-hardness thick-faced (35% face when Krupp did it originally) "Krupp Cemented" warship side armor. French Nickel-only steel introduced in 1890 could not be hardened into KC at over 9" plate thickness, but the Chromium allowed much thicker plates to be hardened successfully. The word "cemented" meant a thin, but very high-% Carbon surface layer was added -- US "Harveyized" extreme-hardness "case-hardened" thin surface layer (some later KC-type armors eliminated the cemented layer with no loss of resistance). In its soft form -- circa-225 BHN for Krupp ~6" thickness here, getting harder for very thin plates and softer for thick plates in most cases -- it was the original material later used for US Rolled Homogeneous Armor of WWII, among most other similar armors. Amazingly, it was just as strong as end-of-WWII RHA or naval armors of this kind (decks, etc.). It used the same 1.22 Velocity Coefficient for the French De Marre Nickel-Steel Penetration Formula introduced in 1890 along with that kind of armor and still used by the US Army for plate quality tests at the end of WWII. Krupp seems to have nailed it with this new 420 plate steel from the very start!!
How’s it feel when your contemporary says they’ve been watching you since they were in school? My coworkers are younger than my oldest son and it’s starting to get to me.
Don't fret it, just point out that in a few years you'll be sat back with a beer / glass of wine / beverage of choice, having walked the dog while drawing your pension. Now if I could just make the numbers work I would be that man, unfortunately a few more years to go...
@@EdyAlbertoMSGT3 He already did that - though he could’ve prevented this whole mess by not naming names - in that first ‘reacting to comments video’ of his, but then he made two _more_ needless and inflammatory responses to Lazerpig’s drama-baiting, in spite of his community pleading him to be the bigger man and walk away. Evidently, he was not the bigger man, and has crippled his reputation as a result.
@lc1138 I find that hard to believe, since the two have posted numerous videos on it, but in short: - Lazerpig makes a video slamming the T-14 Armata by claiming things like it supposedly using a WW2-era German engine - Cone and Red Effect point out much of his claims as erroneous and publicly question his credibility as an armour history buff, as well as throwing unneeded insults and insinuations his way - Lazerpig counters by questioning their credibility in turn, and calling them 'Russian shills' for supposedly supporting the T14 by merely critiquing his takedown, then insulting them both in turn - At this point, the subscribers of each channel start flame wars and attempt to brigade the other's channels - Cone and Lazerpig in particular cease mention of the T14 altogether and purely focus on undermining the credibility of the other - The Chieftan steps in to try and calm things down whilst missing the fact that this was never really about the T14 in the first place - The Chieftan interviews Cone and Lazerpig gets a Top 5 Tanks video with Bovington Tank Museum - Things have probably calmed down for the moment, but resentment and grudges are still present
Would love to see The Chieftain meet with RedEffect after this. We could hear different perspective between the east and the west. If im not mistaken, he is Serbian nationality.
Ran into you once at the Battle for the Airfield at Heritage Museum. Im terrible at first impressions, but I was stunned to see you there. I bet Cone of Arc felt similarly! Great video
Their are a perfect combination, Cone explains things in easy to understand way (and some help with an anime character) and with that you can move to the Chieftain for more in depth info
Looking at the T29 behind these two YT tank giants, well maybe only one giant, 10:20 grousers only fitted on the outside of the track, if that is what thry actually are?
Last time I went to a (the) tank museum was during Armor Officer Basic Course at Ft Knox in late 1986... It was pretty cool back then. Don't know about it being in Georgia. I've been in Savannah since a wee bit after Desert Storm.
I've been wanting to visit for years and it's always been closed for renovations or manpower shortage or some other excuse, can't wait to visit now that it's actually open again.
Its going to be really weird when you meet some more gaming oriented channels like bo time, spookston, tankenstien just to name a few but im loving these videos regardless. (Im to big of a nerd to actually be bigger an a full time employee at a gas station)
I love how that turret has those ears like warships do (i presume it's a range finder/periscope, like in warships where the turret crews used these ears in case the central fire control was disabled).
I'm not the right person to say this, but to me, the difference between the two channels is that Chieftain provided a lot of information about subjects I'm ALREADY interested in, and ConeOfArc provides less information about subjects I'm not already interested in - but the videos are short enough for me to justify investing the time to watch. I learn from both, I just learn differently. 💜💜
There is a museum I'm planning on visiting and it has a Sherman from what I have seen, now it had the long barrel so I can't say if it is a WWII built sherman or a post war sherman, or by God even a Frankenstein tank like the FrankenTiger
Anything with oil in it has to have an oil pan under it, per army rules. Doesn't matter if it leaks or not. Look at any photo of HMMWVs or trucks in a motor pool. That said, I suspect that 80-year-old seals probably aren't what they used to be.
@@TheChieftainsHatchThat makes sense. I wonder how many oil pans are in the military inventory. I wish I had thought of using oil pans in my drive way. Too late to start using a pan now. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment(which was more or less tongue-in-cheek). By the way, I was born in January of 1942, and the Sherman has always been my favorite tank. Thank you for explaining why it was the tank needed by the U.S.A. in WW2, and putting to rest the defects claimed by many people after the war.
@@luizviniciusvieiraalexandr4979 You can accept that Lazerpig made an ass of himself while also accepting that he's accurate in calling RedEffect a Russian shill. RedEffect has a pretty obvious bias towards Russia, including the bizarre manner in which he's covered the war in Ukraine, and stating that is perfectly fine.
@@2639thebosslazerpig is that you?? Lol, just because he did not explicitly state he supports ukraine and is hyped to enlist as a volunteer doesn’t mean he supports Russia (in fact, it does imply that he does support ukraine based off his remarks regarding the conflict). He likes soviet tank technology (of which ukraine contributed HEAVILY to soviet tank development) and dislikes many of the post soviet Russian modernizations and makes videos dedicated to their criticism. Redeffect is an extremely objective and knowledgeable researcher and stating otherwise simply means you are neither objective nor knowledgeable. Go back to the piggy’s comment section where you belong and cope and seethe 🤡🤡🤡
With ALL tanks there is a trade off between the 3 factors of tanks, Firepower, Mobility, Protection. With Chieftain we favored firepower & protection over mobility & at the time we outgunned any tank on the battlefield. We outgunned the Soviets by about a 1,000 meters.
Ack! I now live just minutes from this collection and I somehow keep managing to miss their open house events. I am literally foaming at the mouth to get in there and poke around. I've even written the directors basically begging for a job and they likely just tossed it out assuming it was another internet nutter... guess until I actually catch one, I'll have to continue living vicariously through you and other youtubers who have gotten access already.
You can volunteer there at pretty much any time. They are starved for warm bodies to do basic stuff. Last time I was down there the preservation director, Bob, got onto me about coming to do research and never lifting a hand to help out. You can get on Ft. Moore easily with a day pass and then the collection is just off the main drag. If you're really interested in being around the collection and lending a hand go on over.
