Well, I'm 58 years old. I live in South Florida. Love Van Halen you know they were introduced in 1972 as Mammoth. David Lee Roth went to Eddie. True story told him to change the name to Van Halen before their album debuted February 10th. I believe 1978 the rest is history. David Lee Roth is a killer dude. I like him. He's got everything. He's a killer singer. I like him. I didn't really care too much for Sammy. Sammy is by himself. He's a lot better anyways man. Every single time I hear Van Halen the tears come grew up with him. You know like everybody else did. Van Halen is the goat, the bomb their music is unsurpassed and it's got to be played. Wolfie you need to play your dad's music and your uncle anyways. Sorry guys, I had to put my two cents into this. I'm watching this again. Just crying. I can't believe he's gone either. Still over 3 years now. Unbelievable rest in peace Eddie. You're playing for God. Rip it up rock and roll Long Live

I was mesmerized and super stoked when I got to see him LIVE (but sadly post DLR) as headliner of the Texas Jam in Dallas for 5150 album. It was very enjoyable but life is so long that as a young person you have opportunity to listen to so much music and think about it. At a concert it can touch you but we freeze up a little and maybe ask social questions. By yourself you can listen and react as yourself. Also playing live is not everyone's forté. Santana live was horrible twice. Jimmy Page was ok. Eddie was indeed bad ass. BB King was my favorite.

@@jamesmedina2062Motley Crue, awful live. I saw them twice and both times they sucked. Most everyone else I ever saw has been really good live. A few that really stand out for me were Paul McCartney. 73 years old and his voice wasn't what it once was, but I swear he and his entire band were spot on with every single note. Except one, the bassist hit a wrong note and Paul's head snapped up from the piano like "what the hell are you trying to do, ruin my career ??" 😂 But also Primus was pretty amazing. Surprisingly, Eric Claptons voice at like 72 sounded just like a studio recording. And many others. But I also never got to see Eddie. Regrettably.

Hey Eddie I'm that guy that fitted those Harley-Davidson exhaust pipes on Alex's bass drums he was kicking a duel bass drum set at the time I was working for a company called Teledyne analytical instruments in Pasadena California well it was actually in a near by city. Van Halen is one of the few bands that continued to maintain the sound that made them. They're unique sound from the start. gave them a path to there success and there sound just kept progressing. With Eddie's style of playing guitar and Alex's drumming changed the genre to a more progressive rock and roll. I remember in 1979, my 6th grade music class, on Friday's you were allowed to bring in music for the class to hear, one song per student. So someone brought in VH1 and put the needle down on Eruption. I could believe it was a guitar, it sounded like something from outer space. That Christmas I got my first guitar. 44 years later I still play almost everyday and all weekend. Thanks Eddie.

Yes it will inspire many young people without question. The difference is it won't have rhe same impact as it had when he came out. Because he influenced everyone after that. Many people could hear and learn eruption without ever really knowing the impact he had because of his influence and they could hear a lifetime of imitators. Interesting. Between Bowie, Petty, Peart and several other LEGENDS we’ve lost these past few years, normally I’d read your comment and agree and just move on. Ironically my dad died of CV19 on the same day - but not having had a “death in the family” for 32 yrs to deal with, I was totally blindsided emotionally and double punched in the gut by my dads passing, and then learning of Ed’s a few days later. It also has a new meaning what death and loss and grieving truly is and what it means to all of us United by music. Neil Peart was my drumming idol. The only time I’ve ever cried over the loss of any “celebrity” was when Stevie Ray passed after their chopper crashed. I was still in Wisconsin stuck in traffic heading back to Chicago from his (now) “last show” with Clapton, his brother, Stevie, and think Robert Cray - all guitar geniuses- and what a show! But then when the “whispers” started circulating at first it was Clapton’s chopper. Yet it turns out he gave Stevie his seat :( . Nobody knew for sure till morning (Same as Kobe’s accident - eerily). I welled up when I heard confirmation of what I think deep down we all feared - yet truly didn’t want to know or hear any bad news. I saw him 9x times live. Front and center many a time. Saw VH 6-7 times (both w/Dave & Sammy) too as Eddie is why I started playing guitar at age 10. Stevie got me to move my playing to the next level with harmonics and southern R&B style vs basic 3 chord Rock. It’s just sad. I’m still just barely (starting) to get over my dads passing and whilst obviously that’s 1000x times worse for me - Eddie was my earthly idol too that I respected and followed from the 80’s and on. Thanks for writing what you did. Short and sweet - but hit me right in the heart 💜

He was shy but he wasn't aloof. He had class & was apparently very kind to people individually. I don't think there's any guitarist who's more personally likeable than Steve Vai, but Eddie's way up there. This interview really tells us his story - it was about music, and Eddie was destined to be the best at whichever one he chose. I'm happy he (reluctantly) chose guitar! Not taking anything away from the world's best rock guitarists, but Eddie brought a happy, bright countenance. It was my BMX era (I was 13yrs old when I first heard VH) & Eddie did something that was so rare for guitarists in the genre - he smiled. He had fun. Slash, Joe Perry, Mick Mars, etc - all the era's guitarists, were dark, hidden behind hair, scowled constantly. They were awesome, but Eddie brought a little humility to the 'look', he stood apart. His sound & tone was so effing incredible & he gave SO much to my youth, not to mention the industry. Never got to see him play live. As we speak I'm trying to learn Panama. RIP, Eddie.

I think the most talented people like Eddie VH are humble and this is what enables them to develop their innovations and ability to reach many people , beautiful interview to see, His influence is very much still alive thus he lives through his family and friends also very much universally within the music and guitar world !

To be fair, he was anything but humble with his ex-band mates, but he is definitely a one of a kind innovator, legend, and by all accounts was a great father and he’ll never be forgotten. I for one am extremely saddened by his death.

Just a bit on the insecure side judging by how he treated his bandmates at times. Micheal Anthony didn't deserve the insults. Especially given the length of tenure in V.H. If ya didn't think he could play bass well enough he should have been given the boot ages ago. Sammy? Well, IMO he was never the right front man for Van Halen. Too many sappy ballads featuring his vocals and down playing the lead guitar which was the band's real strength and main draw. A simple "Thanks for you're service, which is no longer required. So much better with DLR but it must have been painful knowing what was said about you when you became expendable. Oh well, he's gone now. The world is not quite the same without him and his ability to squeeze the wicked sounds from his guitar.

I was really sorry and sad to hear of his passing. Some of those Van Halen tunes will forever be associated with summer and good times for me. Panama came on the radio over the weekend, I turned that bad boy up to # 11 and rocked out so hard. RIP Eddie Thanks for the memories, your incredible talent, and those fantastic videos from the 80's!!! I'll miss you.

God bless this interviewer. She asks a question and lets Eddie answer without talking halfway through his first sentence. Gives him time to pause or finish a story. She made this interview a pleasure to watch and hear. We got to actually learn a little about this guitar icon without him being constantly interrupted. 😊

I thought the interviewer was awful. She had no real interest in guitars or even van halen. She seemed like she was keeping quiet because she had nothing to say and was hoping Eddie would fill the hour with his natural charisma (which he did) and she only interjected with her emergency, pre-prepared questions, when there was a lul in the conversation. She didn't engage with the things he said to encourage him to speak more about the things he was talking about, she just left him hanging like a limp cock, to fill in the agreed 1 hour interview himself, which he did because he had something to say, not because she allowed him to say it. The questions she asked were trite and unrelated to the stories he told. The only reason I watched till the end is because Eddie was interesting and engaging, not because the interviewer was skilled or the TV production was professional (which it wasn't i.e. microphone problems, unnecessary camera zooming, awkward introduction ) Ultimately at the end of the interview, if you can ignore the bad production, you realize Eddie Van Halen is incredibly interesting and was underratedley innovative in his life and would have benefited from an interviewer who knew a thing or two about music and guitars rather than a sycophant who only wanted to please the audience by simpering, smiling and being good looking.

I’m still grieving over the loss of Eddie. He was such a gifted, musician and humble man. In my much younger years, I attended so many California Van Halen concerts with friends, and boyfriends. Always inching my way to the front of the stage. 😊 I have some amazing, funny and heartwarming stories of interactions with the band on and off stage. Eddie, Alex and Michael were true gentlemen. I’ll forever be in awe over Eddie’s magical, guitar playing techniques. Seeing some of the newer videos, or taped recordings, from concerts I attended, when I was young, on RU-vid, is a true walk down Memory Lane. I have all the eight tracks, vinyls, cassettes, and cds from the very beginning. It started when I was a teen, and I’m now 58. Our son was introduced to VH at a young age. He took years of electric guitar lessons. But just like Eddie, he writes his own music. Never using sheet music. Our son is an awesome guitarist and can play many of Eddie’s music, just by listening. I’m still getting weepy over Eddies passing. But, finding a safe places to share memories and thoughts about all of our experiences, with Eddie and Van Halen is genuinely helping me emotionally. Thanks everyone. ♥️

@Adrian James, he may have been those things at some point in his life, but this interview was made 5 years before his passing, and look who he had become by then. A humble, kind and polite man who, despite all he has acomplished and all he meant to music in general and guitar in particular, was happy because he had the BLESSING of still having his family very close to him, sharing love with them. A man who saw his son as a truly better version of himself and was more proud of THAT than of whatever else he had achieved in life. Whose "old times I miss the most" was not the peak of fame and glory, but jammimg a little with his beloved and long gone father, the giant on whose shoulder he stood (and he knew it). In my book, that is a great human being. It may not be in yours, and that's ok.
