My favorite electric player alive right now-- Cat is off the chain...every thing he plays sounds spontaneous... and it takes a lot of hard work to get to that place as a player...

I so agree, and the shame it is, I live on the west coast of Australia and unless you buy every guitar magazine available and surf youtube you just don’t hear about artists like Eric Gale, all we get is empty calories over the radio waves here..

9 years later, and my 53 year old ass will agree with your opinion. He was a child prodigy like his departed younger brother, born to play. Just like natural athletes...naturally gifted musically inclined.

He's so right about Jimi, everyone has taken something from the great guy who started it all and brought guitar playing to the fore. Book of guitar is full of many pages written by many great players, Jimi has quite a few more than most but Eric has his page too. Totally a player in his own right, creative with his own style. He has/will influence many a player to come, a very inventive player and musician, may he amaze us for many more years to come.

Great effin tone for sure. I saw Eric Gales and Eric Johnson at the Experience Hendrix tour in Austin a month ago. His influences are in my top faves, and Eric Gales is just killing all the great licks, and tasty chords, and shredding his own style. He is an artist, and who doesn't love Jimi Hendrix?

Eric Gales is awesome. He's got a very unique sound and style- sounds nothing like Hendrix and that's a good thing. I've been enjoying his work since he was 16 in the Eric Gales Band. He seems to mix blues with jazz and has his own approach to melody, scales, cords which is really refreshing. The key to his sound is that he strings the guitar in standard righty but plays lefty, just like Dick Dale and Albert King. This fact influences the chords he plays, how he uses scales and how he thinks about melody. He also hybrid picks- using middle and ring fingers to play E A and D strings while he picks the high strings. He's also right handed (like Kris Roe of the Ataris). His fretting hand is dominant so he has the dexterity to fret chords that left handed players cannot reach. It's really entertaining and educational to watch him play. His sound is amazing.

The guy is amazing. Its like he hears all of the great musicians songs ,and makes them his own. They might be their songs by name, but he makes them his while he's playing them. I think all the ones that have passed ,would be proud to hear his interpretation? Very original,guitarist.Loved to see him live,seems very respectful of those that came before him.

@@vincentl.9469 Yo, Vincent...! "Sensible...lyrics"...??? Obviously, that's either a wild, laugh 'til ya can't breathe joke or you're just having fun trolling to get a knee jerk reaction (from someone like me!). An "on the level" comment like that blatantly misses the >entire< point about practically >everything< concerning Jimi Hendrix's songs and musical abilities. Are you a stand up looking for a job, or are you the guy who reads absolutely astounding, mind-blowing poetry while complaining that it's poetic...?!?!? I was playing left and right-handed, and left-handed upside-down, using the acoustics of friends. After I saw Jimi and dropped out of high school for a factory job to buy a Strat and Marshall with effects, it was tormenting me, having to decide which way to play. It was easier to do everything with the bass strings on the bottom. I went to see George Benson and he took me backstage to help me decide. In 1972 I built my first left-handed body with a right-handed neck and took it from there. You should too.

It is exactly, as he says: Jimi Hendrix is an influence but Eric Gales is miles away from Hendrix. Erics tonal and chord progression is in an dimension, Hendrix never reached. Hendrix is a monument, without any doubt, but Eric Gales is one too, but in his very unique way. It is a shame, that so many people don't allow him, to leave the shadow of Jimi Hendrix only because he is black, seems to be a lefty and plays strat. Look at any guitarist and you can hear in their playing phrasings, that Hendrix used, but that doesn't mean, that they are Hendrix-clones. Eric Gales is no lefty (!) and he plays in his very, very lovely and unique style. I can listen and watch him playing for hours and he is always surprising me with his playing and I don't think a millisecond of Hendrix.
@undergroundjohnny
@undergroundjohnny 6 лет назад
You are nuts if you believe that Eric Gales "surpassed" Jimi Hendrix! That is just so far from the truth and historically will never be the case. Jimi was a far more original and creative guitar player , better singer and accomplished song writer with real number 1 hits. I hate it when people think Gales is beyond anything but himself (with his huge street manner and ego.) Eric is a fine guitarist , but he is and will never be on the level and class as Jimi. It will all add up in the end pound for pound.
@TheSloppySlender
@TheSloppySlender 6 лет назад
undergroundjohnny to what you said abd to the one you relpied to. they are different guitatists.. the whole point of influence in the world of music is TO BE INFLUENCED and envision a different way of approaching the music yourself. withkut people veing influenced by others music would never sprrad its genres and become what it is today. imo jimi is the greatest simply because when I listeb to his songs abd others, no music is more alive and is so fluent as hedrix' (for me, its all an opinion especially since you cant aak hendrix...) so the fact gales is influenced by hendrix is grea, but the word clone just.. cant be used, nor the measurement of whos better... for fuck sake they are sooo freaking good the both of them.. if you really want an answe I thing gales is more of a traditional player with his way of building the song around other instruments.. doesnt mean he ait creative or that he is repetetive, hes just an innovator but not in the creativity part of music. jimi was.. exactly that.. and to be able to take something and make it look sound and feel entirely different (music) is such a rare talent, thats why he is who he is. if hendrix started playing today influenced by the music today he wouldve been as big or atleast as influencial because he was avle to do it then without anyone scholding or showing him how.. such a creative way of thinking would definitely be present and will be shown through his playing even today because thats the way he was "programmed" gis braim worked to find something different because he wanted to find something different.. thats all
