Jan is unquestionably world top 10 in opening knowledge, but he's so self-deprecating nobody realises he's ludicrously competitive and beneath that "yeah whatever" exterior he's mind-blowingly good and an exceptional commentator.

A great interview, I liked it a lot. Niclas managed somehow to get Jan to open up about a lot of things. The question about the improvement in chess at the end and Jan`s reaction reminded me a bit of Garry Kasparov. When a hobby player asked him: "How can I improve?" he answered: "Why do you want to improve ? You want to beat your son or the neighbor? Just enjoy the game, that is more important than improving..."

These interviews are great. It's the first time I've seen GMs talk openly about improving chess, training, recommendations and other tips. 👍 I don't think other chess channels feature this format. PS: Good description by the way.

Und letzte, in englisch Schlagen bedeutet Take/Hit/Capture/beat.

I think there was a sleep study that showed how studying a new topic before sleeping helped with retention of information for the next day. I'm not sure how useful that would be if a tournament starts at 2 p.m. but maybe for an early one it would be better.

Yeah, but there is the hidden (true) implication that it's mostly about your talent. If you have talent, you'll keep improving and your brain will naturally put together the things you learn.

You're giving 'talent' too much credit, and not giving 'hard work' enough credit.. just my opinion. Talent helps but it isn't everything.

No one said it's everything. I said you need it to build on whatever talent you have.

Jan's facial expressions are so hard to read. And this looking around, seems as if he's not really interested. And his answers are not very comforting the interviewer. But still he's so authentic and origial. I don't know if I like or dislike viewing the video. Due to Fremdscham when Jan talks vs interesting content. ^^

@jorgeromero5122

well, i do remember what to do for improve my chess, for example, on 1800 points, and below 2000´s, it is most of all, knowing the basics on opening and lines, and tactics. I not to used, tactics training, I think it is most like, concentration more in the continuation of the moves you make. When I got over 2000's, let say, 2000's and 2100 pts, I feel, that in my case I beat this guys, understanding better the pawn structures, and improving my pieces on better squares. Maybe, I can say that, this method can beat even under 2200 points players. But when I play over that rating, the mistakes in the opening make a hole out of diference in the position, because they can exploied better. That's why I think that the mastering in the opening become a serious factor for improving over this level. Studying and memorising lines in the opening, to get a better position.

I don't even have an elo rating right now. I have a pretty strong opening repertoire, I play a lot of top 3 engine moves in straight forward positions online and often get an advantage, I just can't seem to convert to a win a lot of the times when I'm up. When I review my games, I can't believe at some of the opportunities I miss out on cause they seem kind of obvious.
