H.I.H. Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, Head of the Russian Imperial House, was interviewed by Al Gurnov of RussiaToday, on 16 Jul 2008. The discussion was about the murder and rehabilitation of the Imperial family of Tsar Nicholas II, the authenticity of the discovered remains and the position of the Church on the subject, the greatest Russian historical figure, the restoration of the monarchy in Russia, President Putin, and the possible role of herself should she return to Russia.
Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna was born in Madrid, the only child of Grand Duke Vladimir Kirillovich of Russia, head of the Imperial Family of Russia and titular Emperor of Russia, and Princess Leonida Bagration-Mukhrani of Georgian, Polish, German and Swedish descent. Her paternal grandparents were Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia and Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna (née Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha). Her godfather was Prince Nicholas of Romania and godmother, Queen Ioanna of Bulgaria.
She was educated at Runnymede College in Madrid and Paris before studying Russian history and literature at Oxford University. The Grand Duchess lives in France and Spain. She is fluent in Russian, English, French, and Spanish, and also speaks some German, Italian, and Arabic.
On 23 December 1969, upon reaching her dynastic majority, Maria swore an oath of loyalty to her father, to Russia, and to uphold the Fundamental Laws of Russia which governed succession to the defunct throne.
This video is produced as part of the project for the book "The Romanov Royal Martyrs”, which is an impressive 512-page book, featuring nearly 200 black & white photographs, and a 56-page photo insert of more than 80 high-quality images, colorized by the acclaimed Russian artist Olga Shirnina (Klimbim) and appearing here in print for the first time.

I met this lovely lady in 1994 and in fact had dinner with her and her young son at the time! She told me many fascinating stories of royals in general and was and I believe still recognised as the rightful heir to the Russian throne and at the time this was recognised by Boris Yeltsin and her son was invited to the naval academy in Russia§! She spoke English with the clearest of accents and with Received Pronunciation and her Spanish, French and Russian were just as good. If these folks held their beliefs and began voluntary communities dedicated to such, I'd see them as harmless. Unfortunately, Leftists wish to control my life and force me to participate. (Of course this totalitarian thinking isn't limited to Leftism. It's just that Leftism is currently much more popular in the public's imagination and thus is more likely to be instituted.) I am not an expert on Russian history, but it is my view that most people don't view the Romanovs as criminals, but rather as unfortunate people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. To assassinate Tsar Nicholas and his family, in the way it was done, was tragic. I don't think the Romanovs image needs to be re-habilitated. HIstory is what it is.

And today's world needs kindness indeed,just like they needed back then,but again,now,as then,for politics and ruling over a mighty country as Russian empire was back then,had to be a ma or a woman with iron fist. And I don't mean on dictator but to be very well educated,smart and witty,not being naive and to not trust everyone so easily,he or she would need to have iron fist. To be kind and humble toward country who serves them and whom they serve but they also need always to he strong and confident. To be truly "there" for their people. Alas,no matter how much Nikolai was maybe loved or he would be loved,I don't he would be enough for the outcomes of today. @LaHabana41 I don't think the problem was with Tsar/Emperor Nicholas II's reign itself but, instead the problem I believe was with the political autocratic system in Russia by which he ruled under. Autocracy may have worked well during the 17th and 18th centuries during the reign of Tsar/Emperor Peter I aka " Peter the Great " but, it it was completely unworkable during the late 19th century and early 20th century during the reign of Tsar/Emperor Nicholas II. If Nicholas II had been a constitutional monarch and had stayed out of his country's political affairs despite his wife's pressure and interference he would have likely been more popular with his people and the Russian monarchy would have likely survived instead along with Nicholas II and his family instead of suffering the terrible fate that actually occurred to them.

The tsarina's obsession with autocratic rule and "you must be strong" certainly did not help modernize Russia into becoming a more democratic state. But yes, it was too late. Too many centuries of autocracy, class differences and religion did its part also.

A Bolshevik. A Bolshevik in the Urals who wanted to be more than Lenin. The initiation of the murder is still up for debate today. Some argue Lenin played no part, some argue otherwise. However, the main goal was to put the Romanovs on trial, then execute them (and maybe put the kids in exile... or execute them all). Remember that when the Tsar was murdered, the Bolsheviks weren't one united totalitarian group yet. They were merely a connection of local powers that had loose ties with one another. An argument is that Lenin only found out about the murder post-factum. An interesting story is that some of the murderers on that fateful meaning felt remorse afterwards, but had to go along with it or have themselves killed as well. The head of the forces there, Yakov Yurovsky, is the real devil at play there. What they did to Alexei after murdering him was far more gruesome. Not only was his body thrown inside the mineshaft along with the rest of his family before being mutilated with grenades and doused in acid, while the rest of the family were haphazardly buried in a mass grave under the road, Alexei's and Maria's body were separated and burnt on a bonfire before being further mutilated and buried. Hence, that is the reason why, to this day, the bones of Alexei and Maria have not been entirely found. Only fragments have been found and because of that, they can't be buried with the rest of the family because they need to find more bones to authenticate them. Not to mention, they have been canonized as Saints by the Orthodox Church and that alone has complicated matters even more.

How can Maria Validimirovna be a Grand Duchess? I thought only a daughter, daughter-in-law, granddaughter or granddaughter-in-law of a Tsar is entitled to become a Grand Duchess. Wouldn't she have to be a granddaughter of Tsar Alexander III to be the Romanov head and a Grand Duchess? She was born in 1953? Isn't the most she can be a Princess? Or were the rules changed because of 1918, and Grand Duke Validimir became titular Emperor making Grand Duchess Maria the only child of Tsar Validimir in exile?

Sadly, most likely not. The bolsheviks and Soviets were too loud and too extreme. They would never have stopped until they were exterminated. They could definitely have functioned well under a constitutional monarchy, however. But, the history of the Tsar is one of autocracy. And they believed it was sin to have anything less. In my heart Maria Vladimirovna is the tsaritsa of Russia, and I, here in Sweden, really wish her and her family all well. Actually she is also of partly Swedish descent. I think that a lot indicates that Paul I really WAS the biological son of Peter III (and recognized by Peter IIII as his son, allthough Catherine II had 3 other children outside marriage, of whom one of them, a daugher named Anna, was refered to by Peter as not being his biological daughter). If I´m right, as Peter III was a grandsons son of Karl XI of Sweden, king 1660-1697, the russian imperial house is through that line also of Swedish descent. (By the way Maria Vladimirovna is also related to our present Swedish king Carl XVI Gustaf, in the way that his grandfathers grandmothers grandmother was Maria Pavlovna, daugheter of tsar Paul I. LONG LIVE both the russian imperial Romanov House and our Swedish Royal House. :-)

Sometimes when we use the word rehabilitated it places a negative connotation onto the situation when that’s not what was intended. Therefore, if we used another word to describe the situation, like simply stating that they would be recognized for their evolution and evolving as a whole, then it states the reality of the situation and allows others to understand that they weren’t bad in the first place as well as they are still open minded today, enough to evolve.

No, he does not want to be the Tsar. He has spoken against this, publicly. He is committed to a secular government, hence, he has no intention or desire, whatsoever (especially considering his age) to become a King. The very idea in modern Russia is ridiculous and implausible.

@kerrijohnstone7588

She will NEVER be Tsarevna (Russian for female Empress). I THINK it was Peter the Great who changed the laws so that NO woman could ever be Tsarevna again because of Catherine the Great. History tells that Nicholas II shortly before the revolution went to the Duma because he KNEW that Alexei would not at that time live past 16. He went to the Duma to find ANY way to change the law as so that Olga Nickolaevna could succeed him. This could law could NOT be rescinded even by another Tsar, which is a pity because Olga knew the situation of Russia unlike ANY others, including her mother. When Rasputin was murdered, Olga was upset, but it is said she said privately (obviously not to her mother) “Although I am upset by this, perhaps it is the best for the country”.She would have made the BEST Tsarevna I believe.

It was Emperor Paul, Catherine's son, who changed the laws. He hated his mother, so he changed the rule of succession to spite her memory.

As an American I've thought it would be nice to have an official representative that encompasses all people. Our political parties divide us more and more and it's a little frightening to think of where that could take us. The British monarchy is not political, or even allowed to be so. They bring in tons of money for important causes, plus tourism money. I wonder where the Russians stand on this today.

There is a huge difference between someone claiming succession and someone rightfully making a claim to succession. This woman is neither, she is in fact a "pretender" to succession which by the very term establishes her claim is that of "pretender" having no valid claim. Her claim establishes a totally new category, fraudulent.
