I wish RU-vid had the famous (or infamous) documentary of Paul Rand critiquing students of the Yale MFA Graphic Design program, circe mid-1960s. He made grad students cry. It was awesome!

I love what he said last, about the 8 stripes. It shows how much we, as graphic designers, try to read into things and sometimes they just don't need to be read. But very good interview! =)

It's amazing how relevant this still is. Even more so now with software (I'm a graphic design student)

Interesting observation. His wife was in the studio and was verbally prompting him and gesturing every time I asked a question, which made us both a bit uneasy. I found him to be a very articulate and delightful guest with a great, dry sense of humor.

I have to agree about my hair at the time. There are a lot of "do-overs" I could wish for in my life. As far as my own design credentials, apparently they were good enough for TIME Magazine who hired me to design 5 of their covers in the early 70s, and the U.S. Government who hired me to design a commemorative Postage stamp. I was even invited to do an Easter Egg for the White House. Go Figure. Even my father told me that no one would ever hire me with "hair like that". Thanks for watching.

Hey, miggsb, first of all, I am sorry that people have been so rude as not to have researched that you are the host in this video, and secondly, I love Ricolas! I think that your interviews are great. I am a Graphic Design student and this was very informative. Rand looks like he is enjoying talking with you. I can't believe the gall of these people posting nasty comments about you. I hope that you've taken them with a grain of salt and have kept a sense of humor about it all. :)

Wow...this is such an important moment in time...today we can't imagine our world without graphic design... the question is almost insulting
@hglankshear
@hglankshear Год назад
The question about what the purpose of design is? It might seem insulting but it definitely promoted a fascinating and useful answer!

IBM logo is related to computers, the stripes are the pixels in old CRT monitors with low resolution.

Very inciteful. I was making it up as I went along. Inspite of their popularity, people like Larry King are always caught scanning at their notes for the next question and never listening to their guests answers. I'm just an amateur but I thought spontnaeity would work better for me than a script or a pile of note cards. Thanks for watching. It's all about the genious that was Paul Rand, not me.

I confess, I designed that "awesome" bush-league background. Hey, it was public access being recorded in the studio reserved for the real news and weather and we couldnt do anything to the walls, so I cut out some colored foamcoare and stuck it in the black wall with velcro. As long as Paul didnt puke, so I guess I felt it was OK.

@TheEditor80 I call myself a 'graphic artist', as opposed to only 'graphic designer' because the 'graphic artist' terminology spans my complete skill set, which includes illustration (traditional and digital) fine art drawing and painting, web site design, graphic design, advertising design, logo design, book design etc
@miggsb

OK, I confess. The whole gum-sucking, lip smacling thisng going on with me was because I was so nervous interviewing my design hero that I kept popping Ricola's in my mouth to keep it from becoming as dry as dirt.

I have to dismiss Rand in this interview. A Logo is a representation of the company and should always be looked at as a link between what a company produces and the consumer. To create a logo with disregard for the product and/or service the company is selling or providing is just a meaningless icon... The logo is the corporate or product icon and should identify with the product and/or culture of the company...
