The whole movie centres around the abuse and how it affects the two characters. Joseph's character showed homosexual "tendencies" as a child, so the abuse affected him in a different way; it made him feel like it was a rite of passage and he was being accepted into sexuality. The UFO concept for Brady's character is supposed to represent Psychogenic Amnesia, which is when someone experiences an extremely traumatic event and their brain alters the details to help the person cope with the event.
I really loved the way they portrayed that Psychogenic Amnesia since the UFO thing is widely connected to repressed early sexual abuse. The film did a great job by including that girl character to illustrate this. When he goes to visit her and we see her dad who is kind of a creeper, it's easy to deduce that she's going through the same thing.
yeah and i love how it kinda destroys the whole argument that libertarians like to use that "kids can give consent" because it gives a look into how it affects the kids who "give consent" and "want it" with neil, and that it still irreversibly fucks them up beyond comprehension for the rest of their lives, but in a completely different way
and it plays with the whole dynamic between the kids who apparently "give consent" and the kids who so obviously don't and how they grow and how they process their trauma throughout their lives. powerful, amazing stuff. probably my fav film of all time
@@averyparkway679I just seen it great movie with a great story , but it was too graphic for me to watch I Believe they could've cut alot of thos scenes out because this movie could've been shown in schools good movie but very graphic
As well as JG-L did, I really think that Brady Corbet was perfect in his role, though he is underrated. Brian's character is insanely lovable and equally as tragic, and Corbet's scenes with Gordon-Levitt were Oscar-worthy.
+Haley Thompson Indeed. Anyone who reads the novel will tell you that Brady played Brian to absolute perfection. There is no other actor who could have played Brian with such nuance and beauty and innocence.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was really amazing in this movie although I didn't expect him to appear on it.He's acting was so convincing and perfect for the role.
It's absolutely unnecessary to judge both these poor guys. They both didn't meet each other a lot during the film's shoot since their storylines were mostly parallel and only intertwined towards the end, hence they may not know each other too well. Also; Joseph wasn't just older to Brady in age, he had done a looot of films before while this was just Brady's SECOND film...hence, he was possibly more conscious while giving the interview. Sure, Joseph may be tired but he certainly has no hard feelings towards Brady; and if ANY OF YOU has seen the film, y'all gotta admit, the ONE scene they had together; they had insanely amazing chemistry. So cut some slack on these guys.
Joseph is one of the greatest actors ever. Besides the movie being really graphic it was brilliant and the acting was impossibly good. That was an amazing movie and Joseph deserved so many awards its not even funny. it pisses me off he was like completely ignored in all the award shows. that definatly the year he proved himself as an amazing actor.
One of the best films I've ever seen, but I've only ever been able to sit through it all the way through once. These two performers especially were absolutely wonderful.
I learned that Joseph is seven years older than Brady. This year, Joseph is 37 and Brady is 30. So when this film was released Joseph was 23 and Brady was 16. We know that it takes 2-3 years for most films before they are shown in theaters. Which means Brady was like 14-15 when they were shooting the film?
this is one of a good movie, the actors and actresses are great… the main actors they made their role realistic no doubt no question because they're good actors, the message of this film is calling to protect and guide our children while they are young and try to understand also people like Neil and Brian because maybe they're victims of this kind of scenario. the characters of Neil and Brian is always in our neighbourhood or maybe members of our family they need love, understanding and guidance not hatred and humiliation… So sad because mostly kids suffered this kind of experience is from a disfunction family, thanks for posting this interviews.
its hard to believe i saw joseph on third rock from the sun, then ten things i hate about you, then mysterious skin, now looper.. he grew up and he still has that same walk. i never knew he had this much talent till i saw him in mysterious skin...
I've never seen someone sit SO STILL for so long as joseph Gordon does in this interview. CRAZY! lol maybe because I'm an acting coach for 20 year old and under. Lots of preteens.
I haven't been able to steel myself to see the film bc I expect it will be very upsetting. But I read the book when I was young and it was extremely heartbreaking & profound. Captures the extreme suffering caused by traumatic abuse. The book has so much heart. I'm thankful it is in the world.
Who'd have thought that the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun would grow into such a remarkable young actor? I had never bothered to watch any of Levitt's post-3rd Rock work apart from 10 Things I Hate About You (which I love), even though I had heard great things about him as a movie actor. After seeing Mysterious Skin, I am officially on his fan wagon!
they were both great in this movie, obviously joseph had the more powerful and disturbing scenes so props 2 him for that, i mean jesus were those scenes disturbing.....
Very disturbing movie...if you’ve been molested it is very very difficult to watch. After the movie, all the audience walked out in silence. I saw a guy I knew and he looked down and b-lined to his car without a word. Very disturbing!
Rofl XD I love how Joe just looks so bored the entire time and when he talks he uses his hands and bradys just listening soo intently but when brady talks he just completely spaces off :)
There's no "world" to understand. It is a universal topic. And wow, guess what? I'm not gay either! Yet here I am, not bashing a movie making some weird ass assumptions.
But that's not his interpretation, that's yours. How do you know all he was trying to portray weren't the after effects of child abuse? (That's what I interpreted). If the abuser had been a female instead of the male coach, in essence, it would have been practically the same thing, because it is still child abuse. And the fact that the director is gay himself (which I didn't know) has absolutely nothing to do with it, since people generally keep their private and professional lives separate.
i was tricked i thought this was scifi lol still a good movie, am putting this next to the tall man another movie that lied to me and was still good...
@MrDoublehappy one day = 5 years ago with mysterious skin. but hey, his time will come...even for someone like Kate Winslet (who'd been in mainstream movies and nominated for years) it took a million years to get her oscar
Joseph was so beautiful at that time~~ i cant understand what the other guy saying;; i dont know about the accent thing because i am not a native speaker of English...but obviously he's not a good speaker. On the other hand!! Joey is a really smart guy i can tell from his way of talking~~ he is sooooo perfect!!!
@GreenSmog17 i know. it shows alot about the man and actor, i mean he was so good, watching the scene in the bathroom, it made me sick almost. made me feel so sorry.
@devoutxcynic I don't think he took the indie movies or something like self-punishment plus humilty! thatis the craziest thing I have ever heard of he took the roles because he was interested in compelling story an indie movies is where he found them. I do think he is still a young guy even now and I stand by that he is intense in his acting or however you want to put it. what I meant by my original comment is it is a good thing that he is like that. .
@nothinglasts007 But in Mysterious Skin he's sexy in this incredibly disturbing way, and I kind of like it better now where I can just be like "he is an incredibly beautiful person and I don't feel creepy about acknowledging that." XP
@pinkthunderwonder The movie is amazing and people should definitely watch it...it's not for everyone, of course, but it's still a great movie. Brady's performance was very good (nothing compared to JGL's though, I must say, but not many are even close to it to be honest), but after I saw this interview I kind of hate him. He seems so obnoxious and self-entitled...and Joe definitely looks like he's sick of him, I love how you can usually tell what he's thinking/feeling during an interview.
there is this guy a year above me that looks exactly like JGL and i already had a celebrity crush on him. SO its literally like whenever i see him its like im seeing a celebrity. Its weird how ive got this weird celebrity like crush on this boy.
@pinkthunderwonder I agree. I don't think it has anything to do with anything of any kind that particularly happened between them (romantic/sexual or otherwise). Brady just seems to be VERY obnoxious and after months of working on the movie and promoting it Joe was just probably incredibly sick of him. Hell, *I* am sick of him after watching a 15-minute interview! (Yeah, I saw part 2 first LOL)
@karinakeys he was, yeah, and lost to Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes. REALLY, HFPA? I mean, I love Downey just like everyone else, but c'mon. He played himself in that movie. Award shows are so market-oriented, makes me sick.
