Why is everybody criticizing her English, this is not her first language of course its not perfect, I think the important thing is that she can have a conversation in that language, and sheis young, she has a lot of time to improve.
For God's sake!! Not all people born to speak English automatically. For those who criticise her English and not from Germany, Can you speak in German FLUENTLY?
Funny is that most of the complaining people are actually from Germany and that´s just sad. There are so many people in Germany who speak very bad English (my English is bad too). Because they fucking dub anything in Germany. Every Movie, every Series. And to all them 14 years old bitches, who think they are so much better, i want to see you in a TV-INTERVIEW speaking perfect English.
***** Yes I´m German ;) ... I really don´t know why they dub everything, but most people are used to it and won´t watch a movie in English (most cinemas don´t even show the original version)... they dub movies very well, they often use the same dubber for famous actors (with a similar voice), but still things get lost in translation (like: jokes, puns, accents)...
"it would make me happy really happy, If I can come under top10, that would be good" And she made it, she was top 1, really deserving !!! Greetings from Colombia and I don't know what people complain, I understand her so well ! ;)
I think her accent is what makes the song really good, and if you didn't know she was from Germany, you may think she's from the uk nearly. Her song is brilliant!!
Most people do. Especially pupils. I don't know about her language skills now, but back then it was just awful. And what made it so awful wasn't that she lacked vocabulary or that there were grammatical mistakes, that I don't care about. But the fake accent, that wannabe-Cockney was just painful -.-
I'm really happy that she won ;]. She has a great voice, she's so pretty and very nice. Her English is very good. Of course she has some accent but that's pretty normal ^__^. Anyhow, I loved her song "Satellite". Lena is an amazing singer. Whenever I watch her videos or listen to her songs, I'm then even more proud of my german roots ;].
I think some of you need to remember that the ESC is a singing contest, not an english speaking contest - LOL Lena is very talented, and charming - and only the future will prove whether she has the staying power to last in the music business or not.
@Adrianaofficial Yeah spot on! She really sound aussie in her own special way. She doesnt sound particularly german. Not the "ail bi bachk " kind of way. And ive always thought she sound somewhat aussie in her music video as well. I think her pronunciation is much better than many germans!
For everyone who criticize her English she is now (2020) speaking fluid englisch and so good and even not everyone can speak englisch that good when it isn’t even their first language
So pretty, so beautiful! Love your English and I know it well. I'm an old guy from Oklahoma so here's a old phrase Lena. "I dig your Chilli" LOL (could that description of you be 'Drifty' Love ya sweet lady.
I don't think she comes across at rude. She's German and may not speak fluent English, plus she's 19 and she's away from home with Germany watching her. That's a huge thing to have on your shoulders at her age. She's a brilliant singer and I love her album hope she releases another one. Go Lena!!!!
im trying to learn spanish (german later on) and im having trouble with it, so its really refreshing to see someone having trouble with english, sharing the feeling.
@Ksueleman I think what she means is that she doesn't want to feel like she has to become better all the time. She's good enough right now and she is pleased with that!
I LOVE how she demonstrates her thought at 5:51!! She looks to be so much fun to hang with, just like the German women I was friends with in Stuttgart!! They were SO interesting and fun. Just hearing her talk makes me think of sitting at a sidewalk cafe, having a coffee and smelling the fresh German air while listening to Deutsch being spoke all around me and, ha, having not a clue what was being said. God love Deutschland and it's people!
For those who complain about her "bad English", listen to this radio interview she did in Belgium: /watch?v=piU-rnk-9_E Fluent she is... Like Knalla16 said, one has to multi-task in such situations. Beside, this must be one of the earlier interviews in English - who wouldn't be nervous? Her interview on ITV in London was bad, too. Again, she must have been nervous - especially there! When she is relaxed, she manages...
Who seriously cares about a few mistakes in her English?! She had it in school for about 5 years and she is doing fine! You easily can get what she wants to say, so what? I think what really matters is what she says after all and that's all very intelligent! She's just a down to earth girl and simply adorable at times!
first of all, she just made her abitur, so stop complaining about her knowledge of words, if she doesnt know the english word for "verplant", which is "confused" i think, that's fine, she is young and i guess really excited. not a single pupil, who learned another language for 8 years in germany would think that he/she would have to speak to over 15 billion people live in interviews!! so, respect to lena, that she was cool enough to go through with it!!
Lena I love to watch and listen to this video and although my age is 83 I am always considering that one day you will visit me here in Evesham as we belong to the same family go German Descendants.
Way to go, good song, nice girl. Wach her face while she is singing. One time it shows that she is working on it, trying to do the best she can. On the other time she is realy enjoing the singing. Well, i wish her the best in the future and the Eurovision is a good place to get her way up in carrier.
i mean that she is only singer that won eurovision song contest with performans and voice and not with spactacular song so all congratulations go to her welldone
@ragnarkisten yeah :) she actually sounds way more aussie in her songs! shes great :D i loved her song last year and i voted for her to win. so glad she did :)
A decade later! Don't care! i LOVE Lena's accent in Satellite and in general. She can jump through about 6 accents in one sentence - definitely some Aussie in there. What a babe!
She sings and looks good, she have very specific tone of voice, the song is very amusing... people why are you so against this girl, i mean "hello" there were awful winners during the years past....GO Lena!!!!
@Zeyto02 Stefan Raab, that casting boss, composed the song "Love me" and wrote the lyrics together with her. The composers of satellite even did not know that her song was selected until some weeks before the show. the woman of the two of them (american) even did not know the esc. but they wrote it as a kind of ballade - this version was lena's interpretation. a more "original" one is that of the other finalist: jennifer braun (also here on youtube).
And Theommas there are also so many people ,who are 18 and speak perfect english.I don't want to compare her english with the english of other people from other contries. That's my opinion and as I said I don't care what do you think for my comments.
We are in Germany right now and watched this contest too(like erveryone in our hotel-public viewing..Was great actually) Did anyone notice that she wore two different shoes ?!
@Valentinovicc i agree with you. she does not have a wannabe accent because she's british and german. though your pointabout maybe her english teacher having the british accent does make sense and i would probably think that if i didn't know that she has both a german and british accent :)
I think I have the discrepancy with her accent figured out, at least from an American standpoint. It's obvious that her English came from the UK, so that she has an odd combination of German and English accents, most notably hard German R's, as opposed to the soft R's of British English. Combine that with the British tendency to elongate vowels, as in "love", mixed with her own native glottal stops, and you have an accent that I think is unique to her, and absolutely adorable.
There -again- have been sooo many ballads in this years eurovision which where performed with so extraordinary that they at least weren't extraordinary at all. Lena came to sing without any great special effects, without an 10.000-Euro-Dress, without good-looking-dancingmodels around her and was just Lena. I think at least thats why she won.
i dont think that her song was the best of the Eurovision (my fav were Turkey,Romania,Armenia) .. but she.s a nice person :) .. so Congratulations Lena
I am from the North Caucasus, and I like her! (just to contribute for some statistics..)) Actually I think she is one of the most beautiful girls that I have ever seen in my entire life. If I was her age and lived in Germany, I would pull off something crazy to first get noticed by her, and then be acknowledged and eventually loved by her. ))
I don't understand all the hate, but I am from Canada, not Germany. Her interview sounds pretty sincere, and her accent sounds odd (british/german) but is perfectly understandable. It's obvious her command of English is not 100%, as she speaks slowly, but without too many mistakes.
i am from austria! austria is next to germany! and i sspeak german! and english is not so easy to speak!!! belive me :/ she speak very very good english wow...ich liebe dich lena! i love you lena!
@Melloorr No, I'm German. I also study and teach German as a foreign language. In my experience German is much harder to learn. For example different articles, declination and konjugation. In the English language there are only few grammatical informations in the verb. Most times are build with help words.
Aww, its sad she thinks she's nothing special, because she is! She's a really beautiful and nice person. The description you're looking for Lena is "scatter-brained" i'm the same :D
@eacorion haha I don't know where you are from but shame isn't the word your looking for in this context; it's 'she's a disgrace' or 'she's a humiliation' to Germany - which she most certainly isn't!! She isn't only trying, but managing to speak English pretty well, whereas in England and America hardly anyone even attempts to practice another language anymore !
