Parents primary concerns may not be what the therapist anticipates. Here the mother talks about keeping her child clean and in clean clothes. This is difficult for her as he is always on the floor and doesn't want to be picked up. She worries that he cries because he cannot keep up with the other children. It is important for her to think he will eventually walk because she wants him to go to school.
Transcript: (Raza is the therapist listening to the mother)
Raza: What are the problems that you and your child face?
Mother: My other kids are walking, his peers are walking and when I look at my child who cannot, I get depressed. I have been to a lot of place for his treatment but no one has given me any satisfactory answers whether he will be able to walk or not, and by coming here and doing the exercises I am hopeful now that he will be able to walk. I can’t dress him because he is on the ground and gets them dirty in no time. It is very hard for me because other kids are dressed clean and I have to do the extra effort with him, I can’t go somewhere because I can’t let him on the floor and if I lift him up he starts crying.
Raza: Does he play with the other kids?
Mother : Yes, but when he wants to play and is on the ground he starts crying because he can’t catch up with them and if we support him up in standing he falls down as soon as we leave him.
Raza: Are your other kids school going?
Mother: Yes they are and my child’s age group kids are also preparing to start school. He is now 3 year and 5 months and I wish he starts walking, it will be easier to school him, I am grateful at how better he is now at the moment but if he starts walking I will be more satisfied.
