This video is an interview of North Country Trail thru-hiker, "Strider". The North Country Trail is currently the longest trail system in the United States, covering over 4,500 miles of trail. The trail starts in North Dakota and eventually ends in northern New York. Since the trail passes through my hometown, I thought it would be cool to catch Strider and maybe glean some insights for us hikers, backpackers, campers etc.
At this point in his thru-hike, Strider is just past the 2,600 mile mark. He has already surpassed the Appalachian Trail and is close to surpassing the Pacific Crest Trail in length.
I thought it would be cool to talk to Strider about his experiences thus far as well as to go through his pack to glean insight into the kind of gear someone on this kind of trek would want to have.
It was an honor to host him for the night as I was able to learn a ton from his shared experiences.

It's crazy how much this gear has advanced in just 7 years. He says a 90 liter pack and says to use a 75 liter. I'm downsizing from a 65 liter because im only using about half of it's volume with a week of food!

Hey I need a little guidance in the trail from Jackson street trailhead Battle Creek, Mi to Galesburg hiking in reverse. The trail ends and Jackson St is a somewhat large street.

I've been planning on hiking the AT for years and I just found out about the NCT the other day and what is even more ironic is I live just a few miles from the NCT near Manistee! This trail needs more publicity for sure. I think I'm going to do a small section hike in a couple weeks from Manistee to Kalkaska. Later this summer I might do the entire UP and into Wisconsin. What were your favorite parts of this trail? Was getting resupplied in the UP difficult? Great video - thanks!

Such a down to earth guy! Michigander here ✋🏼 I will be doing a section of NCT in the U.P with my daughter the summer.. This video is a few years old now.. I wonder how much more popular the trail has got? In a way I want it to stay small.. but big enough it gets the attention it needs ☺️

The material (down) has a higher 'R' value than most synthetic materials. Most sleeping bags you see with tons of loft are that way because their materials are synthetic and loftier. Since down is lighter and more compact, a lot of backpackers prefer it, but once you setup camp, folks usually have to fiddle with it a bit to give it loft. Believe it or not, but many folks who winter camp prefer down for its warmth-to-weight-space ratio over synthetics.

I live a couple miles from part of the NCT, great place to run but very rugged!

Jake Boyer Yeah some parts are. In my town, the trail is actually paved for about 12 miles or so because it merges with our local bike path. Some great trail running spots on it though!

Lafuma. I bought my Lafuma bag at a local Dunham's store. I'm not sure what other retailers sell them. I'm sure you can pick them up online.

The sleeping bag does not appear to have much loft. I would not want to be in 30 degree weather in that.

When you thru-hike, do you have to follow blaze to blaze, or can you take short cuts when the marked trail takes you "the long way around"?
@chanthemaniscool
@chanthemaniscool 4 года назад
Jennifer Simpson follow the blue to blaze signs, blue markers on trees. Not really taking a short cut, but a sign is usually posted before the NCT joins another trail, blinking lines with blue and brown
