I don't agree with Domingo on the piracy issue. Yes piracy needs to be controlled to a certain extent because obviously the general rule that people should pay for service should be maintained. HOWEVER, there is a flip side to this: if it weren't for piracy, just HOW MANY of opera works would've been preserved? How many people without money would have heard Domingo's singing. Not all artists get so many record deals that Domingo gets, and many of those recordings (live especially) are precisely preserved because we have the internet to post these things on here (June Anderson, Luciana Serra etc). The legacy is preserved because we have piracy, otherwise so many wonderful work would've been lost.

As a lifelong pirate and collector of live opera recordings, I can say with some confidence that the legendary performamces of the past are "pirated": Callas and her Mexico City Aidq, Lisbon Traviata etc. Leyla Gencer would ne unknown without them imstead of a cult figure. Why? because they are better, more exciting, and present a singer in the best possible sitiation (if you cant be there). Countless Met broadcasts are the only evidence we have many great performere.Studio recordings of opera are usually flat,dull or just aweful. I know he refers to downloading, but recording has changed, the business is completely different and the era of royalties and of owning hard copies of records is now over. Streaming or youtube will meet consumer needs. Everyone has to adjust. ..What will the NEXT format be?
