How has your social anxiety impacted your job interview experiences and work life? I want to hear about it. 🤗
@bephey

My anxiety is so strong that I can't even think about job interviews without feeling anxious, even watching examples of good interview it just freaks me out because I just imagine myself in that situation. I've just started uni and I feel so far behind, everyone goes out together and I just come home back to my safe space. Another reason for this is I can't afford to go out with them because I can't bare the thought of job interviews/working in a new environment where I know no-one. It scares me that I'll never be able to get a job and my life will just be filled with anxiety wherever I go. I wish people were more understanding and knowledgable about this disorder because it is so incredibly crippling and people just assume we're being shy for fun. Thank you for making this video, it was so interesting to watch 💓

Ahh, Bethany, so sorry to hear about your experience. I completely agree that not enough people understand just how miserable and debilitating social anxiety can be. I really appreciate you watching this video and taking the step to leave your comment. I know there are others who will be able to relate.

Practicing and Roleplaying only makes me freeze up during interviews. Some employers don't even ask the questions I practice, and some ask oddball questions I was not prepared to answer. The first round with HR is always the strangest. I had a few who never asked me about myself and only talked about their needs, I had others who wanted extreme levels of detail about my day-to-day work experience which is unusual coming from an HR person. I find the chemistry between the interviewer and interviewee really makes or breaks the interview. Some interviewers are great at getting people to relax and answer questions social anxiety or not while others are too stiff and rigid in their approach and make candidates nervous.

I literally just ignore my anxiety and it’s never as bad as my brain makes it out to be. I have an interview this Wednesday but what’s the worst than can happen? I already have a job so it’s not like I’m losing anything by trying. As the Chinese say - “if you aim at nothing, you can’t miss”.

11:52 I love your first tip but regarding tip 2, I think there is a reason why some people with social anxiety don’t or can’t deal with the “negative beliefs”. Some people don’t have a tangible negative belief to deal with. There are many that suffer with social anxiety as a result of a visceral response. There isn’t necessarily a negative thought pattern causing them to be anxious, rather it’s a fight or fight response that can’t always be “explained” or reasoned with. I find positive self talk helps to calm nerves before I get into an anxious situation but does nothing for me if I actually start to feel anxious in that situation. My theory just that the part of the mind involved in reason does not always have control on the limbic system

I completely understand what you're saying, and this does sometimes come up when working with individuals who struggle with anxiety (and other emotional challenges). In these situations, it is sometimes helpful to focus more on behavioral practice with the use of experiments and exposures while focusing less (or sometimes not at all) on the cognitive piece. Thank you for sharing this feedback.

Social anxiety disorder is caused by hypoglycemia. Go on a hypoglycemic diet and do a course in cognitive behavioral therapy. When your biology is functioning properly, you won’t get the physical symptoms, which can allow you to fix the psychological. But you have to fix the biology first. Check out the hypoglycemic association of Australia. That organization explains everything. I kid you not. SA disorder is curable with a proper diet and the right mindset.

I just realised something. I am currently very anxious about a job interview tomorrow and I am currently half-way through this video. Thank you for the tips and making this video! But i realised as someone with social anxiety I am trying to do all these things and it feels like no one is trying to accomodate for my social anxiety. This may sound silly or self-centred. But i feel like I am trying to put all these things in my head and change how i think and what i do but I have this illness that I did not choose. I wish the hiring process involved ways to make people with social anxiety feel like they don't have to spontaneously change and the company would do something extra to get to know us beyond the anxiety. Idk. Yes I know I need to do something to get better but i think once i get a job or start something new with time i get more comfortable and can perform well. It's like if I turned up with a cough or i had sinus problems i wouldn't feel such a need to hide my illness. And perhaps social anxiety gets in the way more than a cough but i am still alive still functioning enough! Yes i can be awkward and avoid things that would be good (and sometimes even necessary) to do but people who dont have SA can be lazy or do things half-heartedly anyway!

I totally get what you're saying. The fact that the hiring process often depends on how you're perceived in just one interaction can be tough. The interviewer doesn't *really* get to know you beyond the understandable anxiety of a job interview setting. I wish I had an easier recommendation beyond encouraging you to continue the journey of improving social anxiety. I do know that some job seekers have had success with trying to network more on platforms such as Linkedin and using contacts/connections to build relationships with recruiters and interviewers outside of the actual interview setting so the interview itself doesn't feel quite as anxiety provoking. Not an easy task at all, but perhaps worth some thought.

this describes me to a T. I hate the advice during the interview to just practice deep breathing and prepare well because it won't matter how much I prepare, I'll be sweating, stomach upset and I can't remember my name or my life it's so frustrating because I have so much to give!!
@DrTynessaFranks

Yes, I understand what you're saying. Sometimes the unsatisfying but real truth is that practicing how to sit with those uncomfortable physical sensations (and reminding yourself that they are indeed uncomfortable but not actually dangerous) is the key. Not trying to push them away but "riding the wave" so to speak. The sensations are like a false alarm signaling danger when there is no actual threat.
