I love the dialogue and how he walks us through his thought process. I'm actually learning A LOT more just by simply taking note of what questions he asks himself.

Dave Pensado you are not only the man you are my Fucking Hero. Thank You. I've learnt more about mixing in the past 2 weeks since I discovered 'Into The Lair' than I did in 4 whole years of studying Music Production at University!!!

You are really my favorite youtube engineer. You make it seem possible, sometimes I watch clips of the big guys and I just think "man I could never do this, I can never afford all that gear and will never have the experience he has" but you make it seem so easy and not too complicated. Really inspirational!

You know, I'm very new to your channel, Mr. Pensado. I've watched several of your Vs so far and enjoyed (got something out of) each of them. Actually, this might be the most informative. It isn't about plugins, routing, or anything particularly technical ... it's more about how you approach turning good music into great music using your God-given creative taste. This was a superb V. Liked it and learned a lot. Thanks, man.

Dave, I am so glad I found you! I watched a couple of your videos this evening and found them all inspiring, but this one is so sincere and true. It resonated with me so much that I am subscribing to your channel right away. One needs to recognise the pearls from shite in rare occasions when they are thrown out at all of us...:) Respect!

The only saving grace of this video besides DP and his child-like enthusiasm is that lava lamp. As soon as I heard those horribly programmed drums(alesis sr-16ish) and that Amplitube v.1 guitar tone I couldn't take my eyes off it. Up and down it went. Important video though and each one I watch I pick up another little nugget that keeps me coming back for more... kinda like golf! Thanks Obi-Wan!!!!!!!!

I appreciate having Dave P. go through these examples... I think on this particular song... not sure what it is... The guitars seem mired in some short slap back funk that makes them seem like a pad as opposed to a rhythm guitar part. But I have found that a bass really does become the 'rest of the guitar sound' on most songs. Depends on what is played and the relationship between the guitar/ bass. The arrangement is key. But always fun to watch Dave go through his analysis

Instant Subscriber. Dave, while I don't listen to this type of music anymore I can't tell you how valuable this information is and can't thank you enough. I'm flooding tracks with too much low end and high end and because of this I think it's fuzzing everything out in the middle and it gives a muddy far away tone that's pretty dull. Percussion is usually a horrible mess as well. Thanks much, Dave and I'll be watching more vids. Peace.

Were you using auxiliary tracks or VCAs? Probably a stupid question since I have a feeling it was all aux, but I want to be sure. I have everything going to it's own bus as needed now, and doing this seems very helpful, so I might just do volume changes on the buses after the main automation. so many options! and my gf just keeps saying "when are you going to be done?! before they blow. What you get is a higher damping factor so they wont blow because something like a loud bass drum wont produce square wave as soon as a 60/100w amp would. More headroom.

Hey Dave, now perhaps I haven't found it yet but I have watched a plethora of ITL vids and still find myself searching. I know this may be out of your day to day but I would LOVE some thoughts on mixing "Orchestrations" I have been engineering / mixing for 23 years now and have recently been getting more 'scoring' gigs. 90% of what I do is in the box and sometimes augmented with session players depending on the clients budget. I have found it rather challenging to get things set in place properly and would genuinely appreciate some thoughts on this. This piece here, I've had some challenges with. soundcloud.com/theweakneed/sets/cinematic-orchestral Peace and blessings. Sean.

Dave is known to mix at a hotter volume than normal because he records most of the instruments, allowing him to have more control and knowledge on what he can push in the tracking and mixing process. For me personally, I actually set every instrument to a default -6 as my loudest volume, and try and build a mix around that. This insures that I will not run into any peaking issues even when I hit my highest points in the chorus. I also think it allows me enough headroom and ability to make the necessary adjustments and pushes with certain instruments without hesitation of fighting my limiting meter around the -0.1 db range. This is a strategy that for me has worked well. If you guys try it out, let me know what you think!

+JazzMac36251 I think the main problem is that the audio from the video is in mono. It says it in the intro screen photo if you watch close, in the bottom right reads (in mono - sorry!). It drove me crazy too, but the info is good, and I actually check my levels in mono pretty frequently to see how it will sound on non-stereo sources.

If you want it to groove more, then the drum track needs to be re-written. I could program in BFD2 with a keyboard and it would groove better. I don't like the track, sounds rushed... she is only 16 so it is what it is. I do like to watch Dave's vids though. Seems like a cool guy and it's always interesting to see how the Pro's operate. @jimijaam2591
@jimijaam2591 9 лет назад
it's good to train your ears to work in stereo as well . just IMAGINE mono doesn't exist and force yourself to learn both Mono and Stereo mixing/mastering . the reason is that using stereo mastering plugins or FM sounding VST/RTAS/AAX instruments needs to be dealt with in the stereo spectrum, since all the frequencies are coming out the speaker at a wider range. Real Time mixing.. real time mastering is essential no matter what.. switching stereo to MONO speakers you're gonna hear at least 1 or 2 instruments jumping out in your face. but your ears can get use to setting the levels near perfection in stereo . if you work in Mono only .. its not gonna help much once you switch back to the stereo buss sound, because its an entirely different thing that requires you to work in Stereo on the fly

Fantastic illustration of how much 2db can either ruin or bloom a mix! The last album I mixed came down to 4 fader moves of less than a db and suddenly everything was fitting in your ears like it should be. It's great to see this from an outsiders perspective. When you have investment in a mix it's a bit harder to be objective because the mind knows it so well already.
