Excellent! Thanks for all this. I first hiked the Wind (north parts) in an ‘87. That got me to go back a number of times just to clear the brain and enjoy being alive. It’s a wonderful place.

Fantastic trip! Thanks for documenting it and making it available. I first hiked in the Winds in 1984 as a 39-year-old student on a NOLS' Wind River Wilderness course. We covered some of the same ground you show here, though we were going in the opposite direction. We began by climbing over the shoulder of Arrow Mountain and heading south over Burro Flat. Near the end of our course, we crossed the Indian Pass (not yours) at N 43d 8m 21s, W 109d 31m 10s (instead of the more difficult Blaurock) from north to south. (There is a third Indian Pass about four miles east of this one, just south of Crater Lake.) A few days later, we crossed the Indian Pass you show from Knife Point Glacier (which was still a glacier--though a small one--in those days) to Indian Basin. (I never expected--forty years later--to see Elephant Head again, but there it is in your video.) from there, we went down to Island Lake, over the pass to Wall Lake and down past Cook Lakes on our way to the Meadow Lake Trailhead. I visited Wall Lake again in 2010; it looked much the same then as it did in 1984. If you wish, you can reach me at my gmail address with username talmanl. --Lou Talman

Well people, how do you know when a movie or video is good? Hmmm? For me it is when you see the closing credits and you go WHAT? That can't be the end, it feels like it just started!!!!!! I saw Tim's JMT video and was blown away by the awesome photos, tasty music and narration that never seemed to intrude on the visual feast I was enjoying. So when I saw this video, I wondered if he could keep up the same quality in this video. My question was answered with a hearty OH YEAH. If all the virus debacle cools off by August I will do the JMT for the second time..... the first time was in 1977 so seeing those crazy external frame packs in this video made me smile..... Tim's videos have got me itching to get back out there so Tim, I say thank you for taking me on your trips. I felt alive even being trapped inside by a quarantine. You ARE the man......

Thanks again, Dave, for the kind words. I'm going to wait a little longer to see how the situation unfolds in California, but I may be postponing my JMT section hike until next year. I'm relying on public transportation (YARTS and Eastern Sierra Transit) for travel logistics, and it looks like that could be problematic this summer, so I may go back to Wyoming instead... It does look like VVR is opening June 1 with enforced social distancing...

TIM, absolutely the best video I have ever seen of the Wind River range! If I had one word it would be AWESOME I live in Buffalo Wyoming and have backpacked everywhere in the Big Horn mountains I'm a 54 year old woman had my 1st knee replacement and looking forward to getting back to hiking again. Hoping to make the trip into the Winds. Only got to do a couple short trips there. Keep on hiking until you can't is my motto good luck on new adventures ⛺🎣🌲🙂👍

I'm with you. Do it while you can, is my mantra! I spent a few weeks of my 1982 NOLS course winter camping in the Big Horns. I'm afraid I'm more of a fair-weather backpacker the older I get, and, as it happens, August is the best time for me to take off from work, so that's fortunate. Bugs aren't as bad, and weather has been pretty kind to me the last few years (I've been back to the Winds the two years following this trip). I'm headed back there again this August. You should absolutely make it there if you can manage. Lots of space and great wilderness.

What a great video. This brought back memories of when I first backpacked in Yellowstone in 1977. I was 14 and had this huge heavy jansport aluminum framed backpack, thick heavy leather boots and great big down jacket lol, gear is so different now. I loved every second of that trip and all the others I went on. I need to get back out there life is to quick.

Very nice video! Brought back many memories of my many days and nights spent with a backpack in the Wind River Range. I was born in Riverton in 1960 and have spent the majority of my life calling the Wind River Valley my home. On August 1st 1983, I left the trail head near Trail Lake with a class from CWC called "Mountain Wilderness" and spent 21 days on a loop that went over Blaurock Pass. We camped on the upper Dinwoody for four days and made 4 attempts on Gannet, but the weather beat us back each time. In August of 1986, I led two out of state companions, Doug from Kentucky, and Henry from Colorado on a 7 day trek to attempt the mountain again. Got beaten back by weather the first two days/attempts, and on the third day (my 7th attempt at Gannet) we made it to the top.

Hi Bill. What great stories and memories you have! I'm glad you finally stood atop Wyoming. So far, my luck with weather in August there has been very good as I've been back to the Winds every year since this trip (and will be out there this summer). Unfortunately these days, smoke/fire is also a real threat to adventures...

that was really eye opening. 12 days out in the wilderness. that would be the place to be when society breaks down and chaos rules the day. all the lakes, creeks, wild life. just amazing country. meeting up with other hikers was a surprise. that would take survival skills that the old mountain men and indians used back in the early days. thank you for that adventure. absolutely enjoyable.

Hi Jim. Thanks for the kind words. I had to get at least one epic Winds hike under my belt while I still can. The Winds are special and never seem to leave you once you've been there. Lander has changed a lot since we were there 30+ years ago, but, after our recent hike, we went into the Noble and it still felt familiar, though the row of pay phones are now gone (probably replaced with solar USB ports-I'm all for progress!) Did you attend the Fall or the Spring course?

Truly and amazing video, Tim. Many thanks for all that went into it, the planning detail, the photo and videography, the maps (like others, I was always interested to see what came over the next pass), and most of all for the fact that you find this magical area as special as I do. I've backpacked in a lot of places in this world, some of the finest scenery in the Sierras, the Colorado Rockies, various and remote canyonlands of Utah and Arizona, New Zealand, the Alps and more, but my mind so often drifts back to a single magical trip to the Winds, two short trips into the Cirque and Titcomb Basin. You've shown me that there is much more I'd like to see! It's hard to match the reflections on those lakes, the alpine wildflowers, the "beep" of the pikas, and all that glorious granite. It penetrates the spirit. Thanks again! Oh, and is your map file something that's relatively easy to share? I think I may like to repeat your route one day...

Thanks WH! I'm heading out to the Sawtooths in a couple of weeks and then out to California to do the High Sierra Trail. I didn't do a video last year, so it's time to make another (or two)... Have a great hike and I'll look for your video this fall (?).

I'll have a posting by the fall for sure. Planning on smaller "episode" posts along the trail possibly too. But by late fall I'd like to have a complete start to finish video. Question: I really like the maps you have using Google Earth. Is there a specific software you used to create the red line trail map using Google Earth?

I did that in Adobe After Effects. I made it my winter project to start learning After Effects and Premiere.... It's a fun way to process my hikes!

Without a doubt the best video that I have watched of the Winds - and I have watched most of them it seems! The cinematography, story line, and editing are superb. What was your camera(s) setup?
@TimSeymour
@TimSeymour 5 лет назад
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! We had several cameras with us on this trip in addition to our iPhones. Most of the videos were taken with a GoPro and the stills with a point-and-shoot Panasonic with good zoom and a Olympus TG-3 for macro shots. Daniel also brought a DSLR for the night timelapses.

Great Presentation and route through the Winds. Did you have a filter on some of the photo shots? They looked great! I am heading back for my third trip to the winds from Bowdoin ME Aug. 2020. Tom...

Thanks Jean! I did some color correcting on some to match the environmental conditions as it was when I was there-a magical place! I've been back every year since this hike. I plan to be back again this August if travel conditions allow...

This is the first video of yours that I have seen. Very good videos and photos. Your time-lapse videos are awesome. What Camera did you use for the time-lapse?
@TimSeymour
@TimSeymour 6 лет назад
Thanks! The night time-lapses were done with Daniel's DSLR (a Canon, I believe). The daytime/dusk time-lapses were shot on my GoPro. I'm currently engineering a lightweight camera slider to take with me on my next hikes this summer (the Sawtooths of Idaho and the High Sierra Trail).

Tim - this is an incredible video you made doing this not easy backpack. Very impressive, I enjoyed every second of it. Loved the mix of various topics and scenery! Would you be willing to share your CalTopo route fir this? Also did you guys consider any type of food caching or horse drops to minimize weight? Thanks again
@TimSeymour
@TimSeymour 5 лет назад
Hi Paul. Thanks so much for the kind words. The cal topo route is in the "SHOW MORE" description under the video (here it is again: caltopo.com/m/01L3 ) As for food caches, they seem like more work, to me, than just carrying a heavy-ishload for a few days. It wasn't like we were trying to do real high mileage days and the first two days were relatively mild elevation gains. It's lugging a heavy pack over tallus and scree and boulder hopping that's more difficult for me. Good luck with your adventures!!

@@TimSeymour Hi Tim, thanks so much, sorry I missed it under "SHOW MORE". Looks like a few big days of mileages. I was **pondering** having one of the horse packers drop the food (in bearproof containers) on certain days. Pretty sure they will do this (it may be $$$$$$), but I have not investigated. What an incredible trip you had, and again, a superb job telling it via the video and still images you captured. Amazing! Thanks again. Paul

Just rewatched this amazing video. We are planning a trip to the winds in the fall of 2024. Been looking at doing either a double loop back to back covering the North and South with a resupply in between or a similar traverse like you did. In your opinion is it best to do a traverse? Looks like you had no resupply. How heavy were your packs with 12 days food? Are beer canisters required? How’d you get back to your car? We are leaning toward the traverse. We enjoy being on trail for prolonged periods of time and really like the off trail challenge. Loved your JMT video! I’ve done it 2x’s now. Happy trails…

Personally, I like the traverse better because I like to keep the wilderness experience continuous. Bear canisters are not required in the Winds, but hangs are difficult in the high country, so I find the canisters more convenient. We didn't resupply, so we ended up hanging our overflow food/smellables for the first 3 days or so, and then everything fit in the cans. We did have pretty heavy packs at first (40+ lbs)-especially for an old guy like me. As for logistics, we flew into Denver and rented a car (I have since flown only in to Salt Lake), then drove to Lander. We rented a second car in Lander (for one day) to shuttle our Denver car up to our exit trailhead, returning the one-day rental in Lander, and hitching up to the trailhead. I, too, love the adventure of off-trail travel in the backcountry. It's a magical place, especially if you avoid camping at Island Lake and/or the Cirque (which are spectacular, but WAY too crowded)... I've been back every August since that 2016 trip, and will most likely be there again in 2024....! All the best to you!!
