I do musical theater and I was a guard in the wizard of oz for the witch and my hat kept falling off so the first time I just blindly kept going and then pretended that I just noticed it was gone and picked it up stupidly like it was supposed to happen yeah my teachers yelled at me but I thought it was genius
1. Oh my god, this is the funniest thing i've seen all month 2. I gotta hand it to the guy who played jack, he did an awesome job of keeping the scene together. if that was me, i'd be laughing my ass off.
I can relate. In our production, Milky White's jaw broke nightly. And during closing night, Cinderella's birds crashed to the ground right after she said, "The birds will help! *wham*"
Well...there wasn't much that COULD be done. Cinderella sort of looked over her shoulder in awkward horror as the audience lost it. The cast took a deep breath aaaand just kept moving along!
In our production of Beauty and the Beast our Lumiere had this weird skirt thing to make him look like a candle stick I guess, but it kept falling down throughout the musical. So it happened again after we (me being Mrs. Potts) chased the villagers out of the castle we ran out on stage and were celebrating and I run out and say "I know you're excited dear, but you should really keep your pant on. Poor Chip will have nightmares!" The WHOLE crowd lost it and we had to sit there for a good 5 minutes to wait for them to stop laughing!
Heh, at least your production included that song! So many leave it out, I dunno why. Maybe because it's difficult. But the character development suffers when the song is removed. And I'm also getting a visual of the Witch singing, "Our little world is perfe--*WHAP*"
A stagehand's job is to never be seen. If you, as a stagehand, are seen, you are ruining the immersion of the audience. If they do have to be seen, it is only during a scene transition. She came out while the lights were still on, actually blocked the actor's exit, then crossed the stage, with the lights still on. She literally broke almost every rule ever.
Soren Peak is right, the actor handled it fabulously, the stage hand ruined it. She did break every rule and it took you out of the moment which is why it's a big deal. You don't go see a show to see a tech walking across stage in the middle of the performance. The leg was out of the way it wasn't going to hurt for it to remain there for a bit. She honestly probably went out there because she was told to, so really it's the person who told her to that's really in the wrong.
Emily Cardwell I mean she could’ve a. Waited for him to have left b. Not walked completely across the stage or c. Just left the leg there it wasn’t in the way of anything
Hmmm... Stagehand probably was early for a scene shift. Also this looks like a high school production, you're not going to find professionals there all the time. Cut them some slack. Also of note, prop evidence of obvious blunders like that can take the audience out of the play if they see that "The leg is still sitting there!", so to speak. So it's better to remove the leg when possible. Really, the actor is responsible for picking up dropped or broken props in character if at all possible to keep it flowing with the story. In short, be nice. Things are often more complicated than it seems.

During the first preview of "Bridges of Madison County" on Broadway recently, we watched in semi-horror and bewilderment as Cass Morgan accidentally knocked a desk right off the front of the stage into the orchestra pit (apparently just because she hung up a prop phone too forcefully). Thankfully no musicians were hurt! Thanks for sharing this, Brian. You handled it beautifully!
When I was in middle school, I played the baker in the jr version and during our last performance, the mysterious man ran into our cow and knocked it over. I had to save the scene by saying "you went cow tipping in the woods"
I lost my shit when I saw that guy trying to slowly put the leg back on stage on the bottom left corner. "Here... you dropped this..." XD fucking gold!
extremely unprofessional of the stage hand, just wait until the lights go out! it was gonna happen in a few seconds anyway, she ruined it by walking across the stage
"Come along Milky white, there are spirits here." 😂 For our cow in the play we are having a person dress up as a cow and the person who got picked was my best friend. I sent this to her and I was like, "Paige this could happen to u!" She was so confused.
THIS IS HILARIOUS! That's why I love theatre, you never know what might happen! Actors did a great job of handling this, and I LOVE the little audience member's hand that gently puts the rogue leg back up onto the stage.... Fantastic video!
Me: Okay! Who *beep* touched the cow?!?! (jk) ~Im in my Drama club's Props Crew and we have a saying along the lines of: "If you break a prop, we'll break you."~
I've watched this a dozen times, and it still makes me laugh. This is a master class in improvising when something goes wrong. And honestly, please tell me -- has anyone been in a production of ITW where Milky White _didn't_ break in some manner?
Every theater persons worst nightmare… I know this too well… 2013 Dracula Westside high school… I played Dracula and every night of the performance we needed to get a new mirror because I kept breaking them…. My director did say to make it look realistic.

In my schools production of into the woods, our Cinderella’s dress was actually a top and skirt that just looked like a dress. And during one of her encounters with the bakers wife the hooks holding the skirt closed broke and her skirt fell down, luckily she was wearing shorts underneath but I still felt bad for her, and she had to awkwardly hold her skirt closed for the rest of the scene, but I think she did a pretty good job of maintaining the scene.
