I'm a native English speaker browsing the videos for fun and I think the most important thing about intonation in English is context. All of these examples sound very similar because it's the situation they're used in as well as body language that changes the meaning. If it's obvious that you're mad at someone and you offer help, it will be seen as hateful/sarcastic. If someone is struggling and you calmly say "do you need some help," it will be seen as you really offering.

Agree 100%. I'm a native English speaker and during the last part with the 5 'Did you' questions, it was impossible for me to differentiate them accurately without context.

For chinese, different intonation usually stands for completely differnet words, so intonation only changes the meanings for very short sentences in rare statuations.

I'm here as an native English speaker because my friend (language exchange partner) asked me what rising-falling intonation means in English. I tried to come up with some sort of explanation, but it didn't go well. I just use these tones subconsciously, I've never had to actually think about them before 😂😂

Thank you! What a great job to explain what I’ve never learned before!!! I didn’t learn how to speak English until I was 30 as a native Taiwanese, and when I said “You are welcome!” from genuine appreciation, my husband said I sounded sarcastic! 😖 He said I should have said “Welcome” in different intonation. Honestly, I still can’t tell the differences when you said the same word with five different emotions, but I’ll start to work on it. Thanks!

Great contents, I thought there is no common rule for intonation in English, but now I know the basic pattern and how to differentiate new and old information using these patterns. In Chinese language, the intonation(s) of each word has been well defined in 4 tones (high/flat, rising, falling rising, falling), it is easier to follow the rule to pronounce each word. When putting words into sentence, the intonations might change a little according to different emotions.

Yes. It is similar to my language which is known as Amharic, It is widely spoken language in Ethiopia and it is the official language of the country. It is the only language that has its own alphabets in Africa. Unlike English language, the alphabets represents the uttered sounds. There are not such a thing as silent sounds in Amharic words. Hence writing in Amharic language is less difficult and tricky than in English language. Even Native speakers of English language make mistake in spelling some English words. Coming back to my point, it is interesting for me to know that the meaning of most intonation patterns of English are similar to those of Amharic.

Funny how many young people finish most of their sentences with a rising intonation thinking that it's cool. They sound as if they're not sure what they're saying. I hope this trend won't last long. Your video is excellent I recommended it to my sts. Another thing worth mentioning is that the more you increase the difference in pitch between the low and the high point of whichever combination of rising and falling tone, the more you sound posh.

English is not a tonal language. Every human carries attitude when speaking. This is normal no matter what language they are speaking. Tonal language means different pitches change the meaning of a word. The pitch patterns in a sentence presented in this video indicate attitude. The meaning of the sentences remain the same.
