I'd like to correct one thing: dancers can join NYCB without going thru the NYB school system, just join as principals ( you have to be good enough with knowledge & capability of dancing Balanchine repertoires ).
The NYCB has suffered from its insular policies and training. It had to expand into the classics to stay alive, but the dancers aren't up to scratch for the classics. In fact, the company is now is a shadow of its former self. Once known for tall, lean, lithe dancers (Balanchine's life-long quest, after the dancers he grew up with at his alma mater, the Vaganova Academy, and his theatre, the Mariinsky), now includes short and chunky dancers who question Peter Martins' right to recast his ballets to maintain their standards. Talent aside for a moment, the females have allowed themselves to wonder into identity politics and equality outcomes instead of equal opportunity and merit outcomes.
Same - I think it's because NYCB/SAB are so insulated that dancers aren't able to develop into their own 'person'. They don't have diverse styles or hiring processes like most companies, which in many ways is the root of some of their problems.
Megan LeCrone is one of my favorites. I wish Peter Would promote her, and soon, otherwise I fear she'll leave for another company who is willing to give her a principal contract right away.
Trail of Smiles Inconstant they say is the moon But the moon never frowns, only chants and grins Through all the seasons Because she beholds the Sun, Her child whom she teaches and loves with the pure love of Mothers; It too knows the truth this is 'way of smiles' - and it is found, Awww! Enjoy! - moon mama (good karma)
This is a bit late but I started Highland dancing in class of 6-10 year-olds this year and it went really well. I was really anxious too but if you can find a good teacher it's great
I return to Bali and got my point shoes at 30 years old . I was in class with bunch of nine-year-olds . Depends on your attitude. I thought it was pretty funny and had a good time. My teacher was 41 years old and still dancing on pointe.
In 4 years you either be just 4 years older, OR you’ll be 4 years older and be a dancer. Either way, the time will pass. Do the things you want to do and don’t think of age.
@@hyenaskate That's not true though, you can be the best at something AND look happy. Simone Biles is the best and she looks happy doing it. Federer is one of the best at tennis and he still looks like he's having fun.
@@Emmareads15 When they're performing of course. Then all their practice pays off. Most likely when Simone Biles is practicing hard, she isn't always having fun.
@@hyenaskate I've seen her practising and she enjoys herself, likewise, watch Federer in practise, he's always having fun and looks like he's enjoying himself. If you don't love and enjoy the process, you'll burn out or quit.
Can you go on point at 15? I tock class a year a go and, the women theer told me that I could Practis with point shos on allredy the first time I was theer?
If you have only taken dance for a year and you haven't done it your whole life your feet wouldn't have developed in the way that they were supposed to if you were to have taken class for a long time. So a way to prepare your feet for pointe is by doing strengthening exercises for your feet to give them the strength and stability needed for pointe shoes.
I started points when I was 9/10 because I've been dancing since I'm 3 so my feet were prepared for it if you never had taken classes before you should talk to your teachers and a doctor
When an orchestra plays...does the trumpet or violin or harp play all night...do we have many trumpeters and violinist and harps that play?.....keeping that in mind you would perhaps understand physiology and athletics and zero injury tolerance and music and organization and choreography. How many minutes does even the starting role or musician play in an orchestra...I think most try to keep it down to five minutes or 3 minutes per show...I know...or what do I know.
also like there's soooo much bad stuff happening within the company. Finlay being sued for sexual misconduct, Martins and all those allegations. It's a mess.
Hahaha that's funny😂 you must not know anything about ballet, the only company that can compare to NYCB is the Royal Ballet they may not be your favorite but they are the 1 company in the world alongside Royal
Kevin O'Hare, director of the Royal Ballet doesn't toot his own horn, and is far kinder than Peter Martins. There is that air of competitive callousness from Martins that infects the company.
I don't like the vibe of the City Ballet. I know it's a competitive industry, but this just seems to go beyond that. Doesn't seem like a very happy place... compared to other companies I've seen. It doesn't inspire me to go and see them dance to be honest. meh.
They really push that East Coast, cutthroat, body-breaking, highly competitive, all-or-nothing aesthetic. It’s hard to be happy when your job is constantly in jeopardy and you always have to justify your presence. It’s telling that the soloists describe their position as “purgatory” and the principals wax nostalgic about how fun and social being in the corps was.
