The Castle of Ontranto by Horace Walpole was considered to be the first Gothic novel which was written in 1764.

I found the most recent remake of The Haunting of Hill House confusing and filled with gratuitous "jump moments". It took me 3 episodes to get all the characters straight in my mind. The 1962 movie, The Haunting, was more true to Jackson's brilliant novel. Jackson was an exceptional writer of the macabre, but maybe not quite Gothic within it's genre; I'm still ruminating about its classification: mainstream Ghost story vs Gothic. IMO.
