It is standalone and has been for months. See how in the vid it opens in a sidebar on your desktop?

it isnt. web based apps can open in the taskbar normally. if you open task manager while copilot is opened youll see edge actually opens. @@shiuido359

It's not the audience, it's the stakeholders. This idea will incite hardware manufacturers to build new keyboards and people will have to buy those to fully "enjoy" the new MS features when windows 10 is no longer supported. So not only will there be more software to sell, there is also more hardware to sell that's specifically keyed to the use of that more or less mandatory/monopolist market. From a certain perspective, this is an absolute win.

Bing Chat rebranded to Copilot and is free to use. If you're part of the Windows-Insider-Program and picked the developer or canary version, then your Windows 11 should show a Copilot button similar to the icon on the Copilot-key in the video next to your Windows/Start-button in the taskbar, which after clicking it opens an early version of Copilot as shown in the video above. It's not the same as GitHub Copilot (which is $10+ now iirc).

They are already on many "multimedia" keyboards, at least "web browser key" is present on my current keyboard. As well as this "copilot" key is already present as a context menu key, which IMHO almost nobody uses...

@@hopperbopper Once GIMP 3.0 comes out, Abode will be obsolete as there is already a program on linux or MacOS to replace every function of Abode suite. Vulkan already matches if not surpasses Directx12. I used it to play Hogwarts Legacy, Atomic Heart, Baldurs Gate 3, etc on my arch linux laptop. Vulkan is fully featured. Linux UX has already caught up too and is being improved to be more user friendly by the month (with Plasma 6 coming out in February with more UI/UX improvements).

no need copilot to ear your rams.. there is widget feature on windows 11 and it also, runs with edge and even if you dont open edge app, it runs at the background and eats a lot of ram.. this is true for any chromium based browsers.. even if you open one single tab (webpage), the app runs multiple processes of the same app. now i opened lots of tabs on edge, and my task manager shows 22 msedge.exe processes running.. this is not an edge issue but cromium issue (~ %90 of the browsers have this) so i disabled/removed widgets feature, now i can really close edge (it doesnt show up on process list on task manager)

To be fair, the users likely have shares through their retirement plans... Surely Microsoft is doing this for them lol

@@callyral yeah, the KDE Plasma option is a work in progress for some months now and only interfaces into Chatgpt 3.5, as version 4 is subscription only, unless you use Windows Co-pilot.

You see, context menus are an actually USEFUL UI feature. They allow serious desktop application users to get work done quickly and in a straightforward manner. It should be zero surprise that "modern" Microsoft is trying to replace useful and productive features with ones that are worthless in their quest to turn Windows into a walled garden toy operating system that exfiltrates your data. That's all they've been doing since Windows 8.

"modern" Windows HATES context menus, because they are useful to keeb/mouse users. Instead you'll have to click through 8 different submenus in the settings to find what you want. So it's only logical that they'd remove the key as well :^)

@@saftykuma Windows 10 had actual context menus to an extent and I'm still using LTSC for now until it dies then perhaps use ReactOS.

there are some somewhat lackluster AI models that can be ran locally, but even if GPT-4 could be ran locally, MS wouldn't want to because they want to track you and sell your data, or at least improve the models using your conversations.

​@@nskubix3196 actually the function key is usually an added key that can be moved to other locations. If we're going by true English US QWERTY keyboard standards this would replace right CTRL key or the Menu key. Going by the layout on Microsoft Surface products it's likely the Menu key is being replaced as it's the key next to the arrow keys on those products.

@@nskubix3196As the other person said, it's replacing the Menu, or Context key. The one that almost no person ever uses (except me, I love it). It's basically just a stand in for a right mouse click.

Likely you can remap it, since it gets unused anyways.
