I think it's fairly simple: Dreamcatcher need to stand out in any way they can since they're not backed by a big company. So their company is using a brilliant strategy: Make sure that the members keep generating instant memes, and make the company and the group stand out in terms of being more free, being treated better, having a better rapport with their staff, a healthier diet, etc. There are a lot of Kpop acts. Different number of members, different levels of singing, dancing, rapping, etc. skills, different types of music, varying levels of backing from their companies. It's hard to differentiate yourself. But most groups have a few things in common: they're fairly "well kept". Most companies don't buy alcohol for their members and upload videos of the party to RU-vid. Most behind the scenes and vlogs from other groups aren't mukbangs in disguise. HPE/DCC weren't afraid to show mistakes, tears, the occasional slip-up, goofy behaviour, etc. Thanks to this several of their behind-the-scenes videos (Dreamcatcher's Note) have over 100k views. I don't think that's all that common for a group that only has a few records that have over 100k in sales. I doubt that Happy Face thought of this back when they recruited the members for Minx; it was, after all, intended to be just another cutesy group and for cutesy groups you show cutesy (possibly goofy) behaviour. But once they redebuted as Dreamcatcher their media staff probably realised just what a gold mine of chaotic energy and synergetic personalities they had to work with. Besides, keeping a tight grip on a group is a lot of effort, and a single slip-up in public or a live show can be enough to ruin a well-polished image. They probably realised that they'd never be able to send DC to any interviews unless they were given quite a bit of "creative freedom". By now all media companies know that "if we invite Dreamcatcher they'll be hilarious but do unexpected things", some shows might not invite them due to this (or just invite 1-2 members to try to avoid their synergetic chaos), but other shows invite them exactly because of this. They know that with just a bit of a nudge Dreamcatcher can provide the entertainment themselves. Honestly, even if Dreamcatcher completely abandoned their current music style and started doing something I don't enjoy, I'd still follow them as long as their behind-the-scenes, vlogs, vlives, etc. keeps the same chaotic and hilarious quality. BEcause while I totally love most of their music, to me Dreamcatcher is, by and large, Korea's #1 comedy and mukbang show, that happens to release and promote music from time to time.
