excited to see more videos on this! would like to get more info before the purchase to see if it fits my workflow but this is super interesting!! great job!!
This looks cool! I'd want to see into the powergrade to know what the tweakable parameters are, before I made a purchase. Hope you can show us that on the next walkthrough!
Hey thanks so much! Yes there are a few different ways you can set up a project for optimal use. I will be covering this in the video that I will be posting a link to in the discord tonight!
I'm impressed so far. Very natural looking without the wide swings I see in a lot of emulation packs. Very interested to see more varied shots in motion, but this is a promising start.
Happy Birthday @BlaineWestropp1, looking forward to more of how this look on the night and low light footage. Thank you for creating this and sharing. Just curious, anything coming for V-Log (GH7 related) and F-Log?
Hey thank you so much! There are looks within f1 specifically tuned for low light and dark footage. Some of the hardest to make. Will have support for vlog and flog soon. In the meantime I would put those 2 through a DWG pipeline.
@BlaineWestropp1, cannot wait to try this. do you have more footage shot on the streets at night with available light, and others shot in low light situation, and LUTs/Powergrades built on that next to film?
Nice. How did you perform the actual matching process? Did you use native tools to create color matching and generate the LUTs, or did you use any plugins (like DCTLs)? It would be useful to see the 3D cube (with LUT applied) from each side before making the purchase.
Hey! Happy to provide more specific details, and examples. Just let me know what you are looking for. The process took quite a long time and the basis was to simply create “good looking looks.” I have a lot of matches to film in different scenarios that are baked into the final LUTs, and then tunable grain halation softness etc in the power grade. I have requests for the digital to cineon (which is currently baked into the Luts), which I will make available as well. As for how it was done.. it was a lot of shooting and staring at digital and film side by sides, moving things around with native tools, then building a matrix in other software and incorporating that into the look. Happy to share any info and give looks at anything you want to see!
Hey Blaine… do you need the Scatter plugin still to get your “look” with these F1 packages? I remember you saying you use it all the time now. Also would this work ok with Canon Cinema Raw LT from an R5c developed as CLOG2 in Resolve?
Happy birthday, I would love to see some blackmagic luts. Film gen 5 works great for me. i also have a question, if i buy this, do i get updates too or do i have to buy them as well?
Hey thanks Morty! gen5 will be added for sure. also just to be clear, all versions are included. maybe it seems like different products on the site but there is only 1. thank ya!
Happy birthday Blaine! Going to buy F1 right now, looking forward to all the deepdives…. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and creating such a supportive community. Much appreciated 🫶🏼
Question for you. Can the LUT's be used in camera? If not, I feel like there is a void in the Film Emulation LUT market for in camera use. If you could fill that void, that would be awesome. Also, for a future video, can you make a video about shooting in a way that allows for you to use film emulation in post if you can't reference it on set. I struggle with this. Thanks, and congrats!
Great question. You can use them in camera. But for certain cameras you have to modify them (not the look, just the technical data). For example, an Alexa only takes .aml files. So you need to convert them to .amls. Some monitors only accept 17 point cubes, so they need to be modified. I am happy to modify to make sure these work in camera properly. Grain, halation, vignette, etc will not work in any camera, but that’s why all of that is in the power grade and the look is separate 😉. Having your desired look on camera when shooting is a wise thing to do. I often have my “show Lut” (which will also be used in post) on camera and the standard 709 Lut on camera and toggle back and forth when shooting.
Thanks for your response. I was aware of the difference between the cube sizes, that’s what inspired the question in part. The other being the lack of film emulation LUTS available for in camera use. Juan Malaya is the only other person who has some available, at least for Black Magic Cameras, which is what I shoot on. But yeah an in camera version of these Looks would be very welcome.
Happy Birthday Blaine! Smashed it and still you're only 21.... ;-). See a bright future ahead. I am in Manhattan in September for my Honeymoon. if you have any must stop spots lemme know
hey! thank you so much LOL. regarding FC, its been a while since I had hands on that so I dont have an exact answer but I prefer the looks to not change mid grey too much, and keep exposure as it was captured. if FC is changing your exposure I would insert an exposure offset before FC. maybe there are other settings in there. I would need to see it. lemme know.. also regarding NYC, congrats. come over the bridge to Williamsburg and go to the roof of the William vale hotel during sunset. thank me later 😉
I bought a similar pack for film stills for Lightroom that took the same approach and it’s the only presets I use now in Lightroom. I was wondering when someone would do this for Resolve. Thank you!
I did the same with Lightroom a while back and im glad I did. now.. weirdly.. I bring all raw photos into Lightroom, make basic corrections to exposure/WB, export, and bring into resolve. I am not doing stills professionally so I feel that this move for me is fine, but I do like the workflow and the results.
Well i dont know you but since everyone is wishing you birthday, well here we go - Happy birthday dude! Thanks a lot for your work. Question time - How can I use F1 in cinema DNG workflow?
Hey thank you so much. I really appreciate that. Currently CSTing into log C or just working in a DWG space is the way, but.. I profiled BMD with film and Alexa and am working on releasing the specific version for BMD v5 and v1. If you have cinema DNG from another camera.. as long as you can get it into a DWG or logC space you should be good until specific profile is made.
@@BlaineWestropp1 thank you so much! Yes currently I'm working with bmpcc og and sigma fp's cdng files. And i really liked some of your images in the past. Lets say they looked deep, rich and "filmic" without being shouty and overly done that say look hello I'm here most film like digital sensor image out there. Looking forward to the upcoming cdng bmd version!
The F1 discord invite is within the download of F1. The other discord invite is in the description of some of my videos. Check the description of “lomo lenses are crazy” video that I posted a few weeks ago 😎
For Blackmagic users would you recommend simply convert BM Film to DWG then applying your looks. Just curious because if you'd like to get some Blackmagic footage I own URSA Mini Pro G2 and Pocket 6K Pro and I'd be happy to just send you some footage if you want to have a base for Blackmagic users looking to get your F1.
BM will be added very soon, within a day or so. for now, yes I would go to DWG or logc. my preferred method is becoming CST everything into logc. but.. BMD, and a few more cameras are being added to F1! Also, if you want to share footage that would be great. I have footage but always useful having footage shot by other people to make sure it is tuned nicely and fits other people's styles!
@@BlaineWestropp1 Awesome sounds good. Yeah I'd be more than happy to get you some BRAW of clips I've shot! I'll send an email to the one you have listed under your about.
yep. me too, working on it now. the only reason I left it out is because there are so many film gen options on the BM cameras, and I figured DWG would suffice. Is gen 5 preferred?
I know probably not terribly common, but I shoot on an Inspire + a Ronin relatively often, DLog would be nice, although of course can work around with rec 709.
Can we get a reference of the luts to the film that they are emulating? Otherwise its just random gibberish names like that of many lut packs on the internet.
do you have the free version currently? I know some Blackmagic products from with a free studio license. the speed editor could be a good option, then if you dont need the speed editor you could sell it but keep the license. also.. I cant quite remember, but does the free version have OFX plugins? F1 LUTs will work in free version, but I need to test the powergrade in that version. Will try and test today.
@@BlaineWestropp1 yeah I have the free version. I’m glad they work on the free version and I’m definitely interested in that power grade too, moneys tight so I think I should prioritize the studio version before LUT packs and stuff but I will invest eventually
Blaine please you asked if there was a camera we would like you to try out. I know this is dumb to ask but I'm a beginner and i was on a tight budget. I got a canon 6d mark ii and i am really eager to learn. I know this is out of the cinema line but I trust you can help me out get the basics from here. 😊 In the future when i am ready to get a cinema camera we will get it together.
