introducing Magnus the Northern Mockingbird (multiple short visits)
Mockingbirds are fantastic gliders and very acrobatic. they have light grey bodies and wings with a bright white bar on their wings and near the end of their tail. They are extremely intelligent and can memorize over 600 songs! (only the Brown Thrasher can outperform the mockingbird).
These interesting birds are also VERY protective of their nests and their young. People and pets can be dive-bombed if they get too close ... but usually Magnus and his family are quite docile and quiet. They fly in often and grab a few bites of Dried Mealworms or some fresh suet and then fly back over the back fence and disappear.
Often times you can see Mockingbirds high up on telephone poles, fence posts or light poles (and sometimes even your mailbox post). They have great vision and will stalk insects in the yard much like an Eastern Bluebird or a Robin. If you see a hawk overhead or sometimes a crow, you'll often see a mockingbird trailing behind it, chasing the larger predators away with its sharp beak and consistent jabs!
