With this machine, you'd just be dehydrating it. It's the same as the Pela/Lomi piece of junk, except with a subscription to post away your dried scraps.
I disagree. I'll admit that the emissions generated from the more frequent stops these vehicles have to make is somewhat negligible. But this product is using more watt hours just to badly compost your food. You would use less energy by thermally insulating your home, and improving the power efficiency of plugs, outlets, bulbs, etc. But really people want a one tap solution to feel like they are being "Green" and "Environmentally conscious" without putting in any real effort. Even though many companies have tried to do this exact same product and failed, this is the spoon fed feel-good environmentalism that people are somehow to unwilling or unable to see. Don't buy.
Awesome concept. Crazy pricing. No regular family can afford to pay that subscription or that $1k to purchase it. C’Mon Mill, let’s make it affordable to the general public.
Think about this thing. Its using energy, likely generated by some carbon dioxide producing method, to dry and compost your food waste. How is that Green? The amount of energy required is not trivial. And then, they suggest that the most efficient use of this, is to load it up on a truck and drive it back to a farm. Which admittedly is far less carbon intensive than the energy used to create it but still, this is a not well thought out concept. Many Kickstarter campaigns have tried this concept and they all have gone bust.
The mill composter is a great idea if it does its thing with very low energy. But then shipping the compost off? Doesn't that obliterate any waste benefit by the waste of packaging and fuel for shipping? Personally, I just throw my food waste out for our chickens.
I thought the same thing, but I looked it up and they said they work with USPS to pick the compost up. Given that the postal service already makes their runs through the locations they pick up, that negates the emissions they would normally make if they did it on their own, plus the packaging is from 100% recycled materials for use, including the boxes they provide you when you sign up for it. It’s honestly kind of brilliant.

Why ship it off lmao? Just use that shit for yourself. Why even buy one of these if you have no personal use for the compost yourself? Shit seems absolutely counterintuitive if you have no need for the conpost and are having mill pick it up. Thats what would make this a waste of effort to buy. (Being stupid about it)
The ad said “What happens when leaders from Apple, Nest and Uber….” And yes, this very much sounds like those companies coming together to make something that works but is also so terribly backwards that it makes ZERO sense.
Apple is the inspiration for literally every startup's "design philosophy". Nest is basically just an Apple offshoot, and the Uber part I guess contributes the dysfunctional and unprofitable business model lol
I can tell a lot of people in the comments have never grown anything. “You can think of Food Grounds as rocket fuel to drive microbial processes in the soil. They should be managed accordingly.” -Mill Mill has an app that comes with my Mill that shows me how to use it in my soil or gardens. You don’t have to give them the FG! They will educate you how to use this organic material. It’s great for me so far because I’m trying to grow vegetables and in Phx, our dirt needs more nutrients. This is perfect for me.
When I first watched the video I thought I will pe paid for the product that the Mill produces overnight because it is using my electricity, then later realized I am charged per month :( We will seee how that business can succeeded..
I love it but that membership? I’m out. I’m sure it pays for great causes but that’s too much of a commitment. I mean, do I have to return the bin to cancel?!
Get a Lomi. This is like giving your solar energy back to the grid, when its more likely a better idea to keep it yourself and use it. No shipping necessary. I could see someone in a city without a yard or plants where a heavy amount of compost could be useful to a local farm though. Home composting should be thought of more as a convenient way to make something good of a stinky situation, and get rid of it w/o the garbage truck. Rather than creating your own soil. Regenerate the soil around you by feeding it! Home compost still needs to be diluted with regular soil at a ratio of 1 : 10 in order to grow plants.
Seems expensive for what’s effectively a bread machine. I bet there are more unwanted bread machines than there are people willing to pay $33 a month to post scraps to a farm. I don’t expect there’s much to the “secret process”.
It seems like a very bad idea to send your biomass through the mail to begin with - what a waste of energy to transport your trash? Also, with today's intrusive businesses selling customer info, who can tell what they can make of what you send them? Do you need to have a subscription for this? I like the idea of taking kitchen scraps and making compost out of them - that could be a valuable asset to me since I like to grow my own veggies. Are you required to send in your scraps? That just seems like one of the worst ideas I've heard of.
i believe this is an even more expensive version of the kitchen composter. which doesnt actually compost food (btw proper composting actually just smells like dirt), but rather just bakes all the water out as the video states. the food stops rotting until it gets moist again
@@theshuman100 Compared to most composters I've seen this is at least half price or less. That is probably why they have to subsidize it with a subscription. This is a product for well meaning eco-nerds with more money than sense.

this creates pre-compost. menaing you can feed it to your plants but its not 100% compost. it can speed up the composting process quite a lot though, but if you live in an apartment, or a cold climate region, its great. if you have a farm, and are already composting, then this isnt really a product for you.
I just checked out your site, I was excited till I learned the only options to get one is either 29 or 49 dollars a month, I have no intention of renting a kitchen trash can, that is nuts. However I am looking into some of your competitors who are willing to sell me a trash can, that I can proudly call mine... all mine!

More eco Craziness from the woke nut jobs if they want to sell me a bin that I can own outright I’d think about it so, until then I’ll continue using my standard trash and recycling bin while laughing maniacally as I wheel my bins to the curb for pick up by our garbage/ recycling truck hahaha
Great product, sadly, you do not ship to the EU. :( I also believe the residues still hold monetary value, so you should consider building your business around the "Mill" in a way, that it incentivises people to get one, because "recycling" will get them some money too. This way, the "Mill" will pay for itself and more people will want to get one and you can transform the world and food waste the way I believe to have understood you envision it. Just make everyone get a fair share of the pie and the world becomes a better place ☮
This is stupid, I promise you the energy wasted to boil off the extra water, grind it down, AND ship it is hurting the environment more than just tossing it in the garbage. Unreal.

Ok, like I get the idea, but can anything exist today without being a subscription? I refuse to pay more monthly BS. If you get my money, I get a product, not a temporary rental.
WTF? You can't just buy the bin, you have to pay an outrageously high $33 monthly service fee?!!! Here's what they say is included: The food-recycling Mill kitchen bin Food Grounds pickups whenever you want Filters, repairs, and even bin replacement Detailed, personalized impact reports A dedicated support team of real people Other than the bin, I have absolutely no need for those other things. I would be happy to pay for filters when I need a new one. I actually want to KEEP the food grounds. Why would I give it to them for free, and let them make money off of it? They should be paying me for it! And it's just product. Why on earth would I want a support team or impact reports? That's just ridiculous.
Wow, I was looking it up just for the bin. It is a monthly service? Pass. I mean I think it is great for a school or small office project, but I am a backyard homesteader big pass.
Yeah i want this lmao. I want to use the compost for plant food and mix it with my soil mediums. Absolutely it has a useful purpose if you aren't dumb about it and just buy it as a fancy trashcan lmao. Stupid comments i stg.
Yeah, in any large population of people these days there is always bound to be one or two that would do such a thing, or mail their toxic waste in with it. What a stupid idea.
How many people here can afford the monthly subscription fee, I can only imagine wealthy people who feel guilty about the environment paying the monthly subscription price let’s see how many people are willing to pay for it
I'll stick to my trusty ol' composter that bakes everything to perfection in the South Texas sun. I thought this was an awesome concept when I heard about it... meh...not so much.

Dumb concept, compost bins will do the same without the need of being petroleum plastic which sloughs off thousands of microplastics then nanoplastics as it never biodegrades.
Technically you are by reducing trash waste. Most waste in landfills is by food. If I can reduce my trash that’s less bags that I have to waste and less I take out the trash. Also reducing trash odors if you care about that sort of stuff. It probably helps with keeping out unwanted pest. Just saying. 🤷♂️
