Appreciate the cues about wanting to play and wanting to stop play. Just met a 7 yr old Boerbel who was well behaved and well socialized. And the owner said the same thing, the dog isn’t for everyone and you have to put the work in to be able to control the dog. The owner put a lot of work in and has a beautiful dog. Thanks again for educating!

Agreed. While not a Boerboel, we (my dog and I) met a 18mo Italian Mastiff (Cane Corso) and the owner has truly put in the work for this beautifully natured dog and while there is a lot of maturing ahead it was a great experience for dogs and humans - both dogs remained on leash while playing. The owner did say that not too many people were wanting to interact with his dog due to his size and appearance and I also did ask if it would be okay to meet as my 2yo female dog is only 2/3s his dog's size .

I love that you tell about what the dog needs, what kind of owner it needs. Like you say, they're wonderful dogs with the right owners - and very few people are. It sadens me when people get dogs like Burleigh, just to show off. Not only do the dogs get the blame when something goes wrong, they can do quite some damage in the wrong hands. I for sure wouldn't be able to own a dog like him. He's super cute, just adorable and I'm happy for him that he gets an owner like you!

I was lucky enough to meet a boerboel last month while at work. The owner brought him over from South Africa, and his name was Reverend. 3 years old and absolutely the densest dog ive ever pet. I held his head in my hands and it was HUGE! Its not the biggest ive seen in real life, that goes to my friend's newfoundland, but it was certainly the widest head ive seen on a dog. He was so sweet. His lil nub tail was wagging so much it was so cute. I was like "I dunno if I could see this sweet guy taking on a lion like they were originally bred for, but I would trust him with my life." And that gave the owner a laugh. He was a great guy. you could tell the dog and him really loved each other. He was very well groomed and trained.

I love seeing Burleigh, my daughter just purchase 2 Cane Corso’s Titan and Thor ( brothers) they are taking them everywhere they go to,socialize. They are also having them trained by a professional that trains their police dogs at the sheriff’s office where they work. They are beautiful puppies that weigh 40 pounds and are I believe they are 16 weeks old. Their ears are not cropped so they don’t look fierce.

Good stuff. My Labs that are 2 and 2 1/2 can definately get rough when playing. We taught them "all done" to end play when it is getting rough, let them chill out briefly then break them to start again. Oddly enough my 2 1/2 yr old Corso is more gentle when playing.

I have 2 Boerboels a 5 yr old an a 2 yr old......the 2 yr old ran into our couch head first at 5 months wen playing an it pinched his spine an the spine stroked out....he spent nearly 5 wks in nappies an had to learn how to walk again on the back legs but we gave him physio twice aday everyday an plenty of mental stimulation an he came through it after bout a yr....but it left him slightly mentaly slow so hes now known in our town as the BFG...hes so gentle an calm....just as well as he weighs 74kg atm. I simply adore Burleys goofyness.😊😊😊

Thank you for explaining mastiff type behaviour! I have a cane Corso and she behaves very differently from every other dog I've had. You've pointed out a few things that normalized her behaviour (slow development, doesn't want to leave her property, very watchful outside and not playful with other dogs)

I've found this video and the previous socialisation one really helpful. It's good to see it in action with a handler who knows how to read the signs and how to respond. I find it hard to know how to react in the moment when my dog meets other dogs.

Many breeds that have docked tails per breed standard are often prone to "happy tail" that causes a lot of pain for the dog later in life. These breeds are often ones that have long thin tails that are not as robust (like the newfie in this video). They will get excited at hit it on things just from activity of daily life. Some will even need a tail amputation later in life that is FAR more painful to the animal than docked tails on puppies. Many people that get upset about docked tails or cropped ears... don't seem to throw a fit about cutting out ovaries and testicles (which has permanent endocrine impacts on the animal)* ... It's bizarre.
@nochannel787

*And yes, there are risks and benefits to spay and neuter of course. Many people spay and neuter too early and has increased risk of bone cancer and cognitive development. Most larger breeds do best being fixed later in life if at all. Case-by-case basis.

I'll be getting a Border collie puppy in July. I have her aunt and uncle, and great aunt and while the great aunt is a wonderful, friendly dog, her aunt and uncle are not so much friendly with people and dogs in general. I take full blame for that and I am working on them slowly to try and at least ease some of their issues. But the new pup I am going to be different with. These videos I'm hoping will give me ideas for better socializing and dealing with the new pup when she comes.

I really love the videos with Burleigh! I feel like its important to have a how to properly raise a dog guide, rather than only ever fixing problems. Plus, I love American Akitas, so the focus on raising a neutral calm temperament dog is key, just like Burleigh. I have an absolutely perfect Akita, but I didn't raise her so I'm hoping I can do it properly when the day comes

I have 1 year old cane corso that was abused at a very early age. When I brought her home at 8 weeks, she was terrified of people and 2 year later, still won’t let someone touch her. I tried so hard as a puppy to socialize her with kids and adults by having people give her treat and let her but she refused to be touched. And now that’s she’s 100 pounds, she’s not aggressive towards people. I just don’t know what to do. She’s good with dogs, very smart, very well obedience trained but when she sees someone, she’s extremely reactive and if they get closer , she’ll try to bite their leg. She now has to wear a collar that says “do not pet”. 😢

Always informative! How do you teach a big dog to be gentle with smaller dogs? I have a very large GSD who’s very large brother and playmate passed. They wrestled and played and had a good time. Now that his brother is gone, he’s trying to play the same way with our female who is 25# lighter. He’s far too rough with her all in good fun from his perspective. He’s 5. Not that I want him to go play with a yorkie, I just want him to tone it down with our female.

Really enjoyed the two big goof balls just being pups. When my girl WHWT girl came to me at 3 y.o. she thought she could go straight up to any dog. As I'm in a wheelchair/mobility scooter and that impacts dog handling, I taught her 'just look' and 'go say hello' has worked really well. It really irritates me when people allow their dog to come straight up to my dog......owners with poor manners tend to have dogs with poor manners IMO

With you as a trainer and other people equally knowledgeable, this dogs would be fine, but many people might see this video and think they could have a Boerbohl too just st like what happened with the Malinois, Cane Corso, pit bull and many other breeds. He was bit by a boerbul when he was young and since then he stopped playing nicely with other dogs. Would it be appropriate to use one of those Baskerville Ultra Muzzle to start socializing him again to other dogs and not worry about him biting other dogs when he gets overwhelmed?

Hey there, I'd really love some help with my pup if you have the time. She's 10 years old and was recently diagnosed with leukemia so she's on a regular dose of chemo which makes her secretions unsafe to the skin. She's always been an excessive licker and I'm having trouble figuring out how to train her to stop - her saliva isn't safe and since she takes chemo so regularly there isn't a period where it ever will be :') She's so excited whenever a new person is near her that she won't stop drive-by licking them. Hi Tom. Is there any way to help/show how to deal with a dog jumping at the door to come back inside? I’ve used a correction collar, but if it isn’t on, he will jump. If it’s one, I can address it without opening the door, but… how to translate to without the collar? I’m fine with vocalizing to come back in, just not the jumping. I stand at the door and wait for the behavior I want, which is to sit first, away from the glass door. Then I open it. I don’t open when he has jumped. Thanks for any help.
